Episode 10 of the first season of Vagabond “Tony” Carter’s hit show STARK REALITY features our special guests Phil and Kaja Foglio, the creators of the Hugo award-winning gaslamp mad science fantasy adventure comic series Girl Genius ! We caught up with them at LOSCON 37 in Los Angeles over Thanksgiving weekend, 2010 .
Girl Genius is an ongoing comic book series turned webcomic, written and drawn by Phil and Kaja Foglio and published by their company, Studio Foglio LLC under the imprint Airship Entertainment. The comic has won five WCCA awards including 2008 Outstanding Comic, and been nominated for a Hugo Award for Best Professional Artist, an Eagle Award and twice for an Eisner Award; in 2009 and 2010 it won the Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story.
Girl Genius has the tagline of “Adventure, Romance, MAD SCIENCE!”. It features a female lead character in an alternate-history Victorian-style “steampunk” setting, although elements veer from what is usually thought of as steampunk. Kaja Foglio, (pronounced “Kiy’-yah”) writer and co-creator, describes it as “gaslamp fantasy” instead to suggest its more fantastic style.
The interview is nearly half an hour long – learn the origins of the Jaagers, the Sparks, and more! Tune in and enjoy!
We’d like to offer a special thank you to Kaja and Phil, who took time from their busy day to do the interview. They were a delight, it was an honor.

Update: January 3, 2011
The tenth episode of Stark Reality with the Kaja and Phil Foglio interview can be downloaded from the new episode guide at the top of our site – or, you can just click on this link and download it right here. You know you want to. Go ahead. It’s about 26 megs, and it’s in MP3 format. And it’s a really nice interview.
Girl Genius Day is January 12th! It also happens to be Kaja’s birthday. Mere coincidence? Actually, no. Not at all. They planned it that way. But you can show your appreciation for Girl Genius by doing something mad and steampunk-y on that day – or by buying their new book, Agatha H. and the Airship City, available at Amazon.com.
Did they pay us for the plug? Honestly, they didn’t. It’s just that good.
