Rick Sternbach, famed Star Trek illustrator and designer

Rick Sternbach’s big secret Star Trek project is no longer a secret.  The  famed Star Trek designer and illustrator, has just announced that he will be collaborating with writer Ben Robinson on a new Star Trek collector’s book entitled “Star Trek: Klingon Bird of Prey Haynes Manual” to be published by Simon & Schuster under their Pocket Books line.   The listing for the book appeared today on Amazon.com, and will be a companion to another wildly popular faux Haynes repair manual, “Star Trek: U.S.S. Enterprise Haynes Repair Manual“, penned by Robinson with illustrator Marcus Riley.  Like the previous offering, the Bird of Prey repair manual will be 160 pages, and is listed on Amazon for $28 – meaning that you can preorder now for a book Sternbach hasn’t even begun drawing yet.

Sternbach estimates that the book will take approximately six months to complete, and has suggested to friend and colleague Jörg Hillebrand that he might have need of his professional services during the course of the work.

Sternbach originally joined the world of Star Trek in 1978 when he, along with designer Andy Probert, helped doing the design work for “Star Trek:The Motion Picture”.  He and Probert returned in 1987 to design “Star Trek: The Next Generation”. Sternbach went on to help define the look of the 24th century that would be used throughout The Next Generation and the series that followed it, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager. Props such as the phasers, tricorders, PADDs and the communicator badge were all based on his designs.

Star Trek: Klingon Bird of Prey Haynes Manual is scheduled for release in November of 2012.
