CBS has made a commitment to purchase Supergirl, a new television drama based on the popular DC superhero, according to an article on Deadline. Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler closed the deal with CBS last night, and we understand it’s for more money than the DC Batman series got from Fox last fall for Gotham. Berlanti and Adler will write the script, and executive producer Sarah Schechter is on board for Berlanti Productions. DC Entertainment’s chief creative officer Geoff Johns, Has also been closely involved in the development of the project. Johns is also co-owner of the Earth 2 Comics stores in Sherman Oaks and Northridge, California.
Supergirl is Superman’s cousin Kara Zor-El, who shares not only Superman’s powers and abilities but his vulnerability to kryptonite as well. We’re not going to be teased to death waiting for Kara to put on the cape at the end of the series, though. Unlike WBTV’s series Smallville, the heroine won’t be starting off powerless.
Born on the planet Krypton, Kara Zor-El escaped amid its destruction but traveled to Earth separately from her cousin. At age 24 she decides to embrace the superhuman abilities she’s been hiding and become the hero she was always destined to be.
With the Supergirl deal, Warner Bros. Television has put a comic book series on every network except ABC, considered off limits because of its corporate ties with Marvel, producer of its series Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter. The other shows WBTV will have on the air this coming season are Gotham on Fox, Arrow, The Flash and iZombie on the CW, and Constantine on NBC.
Berlanti is also behind the CW dramas Arrow and The Flash. Adler had previously worked with Berlanti on his superhero-themed ABC drama No Ordinary Family. The new series will be produced at the Warner Bros. studios in Burbank, California.
Supergirl was created by writer Otto Binder and artist Al Plastino in 1959.
