2017: A Look Forward at Superhero TV & Movies

While 2016 brought us some amazing moments for fans of superhero movies and shows, 2017 looks like it will leap over that with a wider variety of new and returning productions.

MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. SEASON 4B – JANUARY 10

In the first half of the season, the once again public agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. had to deal with Ghost Rider. Now, they will have to deal with the threat of artificial intelligence, in the form of AIDA.

SUPERGIRL SEASON 2B – JANUARY 23

Supergirl returns with an episode directed by Kevin Smith, who once wrote a draft for the not-produced movie Superman Lives. Here, he directs a depowered Supergirl under a red sun, and Jimmy Olsen continuing to defend National City as the Guardian.

THE FLASH SEASON 3B – JANUARY 24

As showcased in a previous article, The Flash returns with Barry Allen trying to prevent his girlfriend Iris West from being murdered by the villain Savitar. There are also glimpses of the Flash finally teaming up with Kid Flash.

DC’S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW SEASON 2B – JANUARY 24

The Legends of Tomorrow return, this time on Tuesday nights after The Flash. They must stop the newly formed Legion of Doom from interfering with the timeline.

ARROW SEASON 5B – JANUARY 25

The mid-season finale ended with a shocking moment: Laurel Lance is actually alive. Well, this promo reveals that all is not as it seems.

POWERLESS SEASON 1 – FEBRUARY 2

This tongue-in-cheek exploration of the world of DC Comics, from the perspective of Wayne Security employees, makes its series premiere on NBC.

LEGION SEASON 1 – FEBRUARY 8

This show, the first ever co-production between Marvel Television and Fox, follows the powerful and disturbed mutant David Haller, who seemingly has multiple personalities.

THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE – FEBRUARY 10

Spinning off from the success of The LEGO Movie, this one follows the misadventures of LEGO Batman as he defends Gotham alongside his adopted son, who decides to become Robin.

LOGAN – MARCH 3

In a trailer that stunned many, Hugh Jackman returns perhaps one last time as a broken and aged Wolverine.

MARVEL’S IRON FIST SEASON 1 – MARCH 17

In the fourth and final solo Marvel Netflix series before the much anticipated Defenders, Danny Rand returns to New York City after being gone for years. It looks like fight choreography might rival or even be better than that in Daredevil.

POWER RANGERS – MARCH 24

In a grittier reboot of the campy 90’s television show, five teenagers are given alien technology that will turn them into the famous Power Rangers.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 – MAY 5

Following the smash hit of 2014, the Guardians return to make us laugh and cheer all over again. All bets on Baby Groot completely stealing the show.

WONDER WOMAN – JUNE 2

The first feature length film of Wonder Woman, we finally get to see the warrior princess of Themyscira in her full Amazon glory on the big screen. This will also be a big step forward for solo female led superhero movies.

SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING – JULY 7

After making his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man finally swings into theaters for his first solo outing, while getting advice on being a superhero by Tony Stark.

THE INHUMANS SEASON 1 – SEPTEMBER

Originally slated to be a feature film in Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it has been developed into a television series that will air on ABC. But, the Inhumans pilot will screen in theaters before playing on television screens. This series will follow the Inhuman royal family on their hidden kingdom on the Moon.

THOR: RAGNAROK – NOVEMBER 3

The third film in the Thor solo trilogy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we will watch the God of Thunder team-up with the incredible Hulk as they try to prevent the world-ending Ragnarok.

JUSTICE LEAGUE – NOVEMBER 17

The long anticipated adaptation of the Justice League comics, comes to life on the big screen. Batman recruits Wonder Woman, the Flash, Aquaman, Cyborg and Superman in the wake of a new threat to Earth.

THE DEFENDERS SEASON 1 – UNKNOWN

While the release date has not been revealed yet, we do know this show is being released on Netflix this year. Akin to the Avengers, we will see street heroes Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist team-up as the Defenders.

THE PUNISHER SEASON 1 – UNKNOWN

Jon Bernthal was so well received as the Punisher on Daredevil, that Netflix and Marvel immediately announced that the character would get their own show in 2017. Again, no release date has been announced, but it is speculated that it will be in late 2017, as the show is still filming.

All these creative people have been so busy, there is almost too much in 2017 to look forward to. What a great problem to have!
