Welcome and thanks for joining me for another edition of “Four-Color Bullet!”

Let’s shove off, shall we?

Home again, home again, fresh from our trip to celebrate my in-laws’ 40th wedding anniversary! Can a drive from California to Oklahoma and be completed in less than 24 hours? And the return trip conclude in less than 22 hours?  Yes, it can, but I wouldn’t make a habit of it. When it was my turn to not drive I get to either read comics or sleep. I enjoy doing both; so it’s a win-win, really. And since I brought some comics with me…

Let’s take a look at a few of the comics that have come out recently.

The Unstoppable Wasp #8

“… But I know one thing. Once I figure it out, nobody better get in my way. Because if Nadia has taught me anything… it’s that I’m unstoppable!”

And after that, it’s all done. This is the last issue of The Unstoppable Wasp, and I’m more than a little sad to see it go. I’ve really enjoyed the writing, the art, the colors, the pace, and particularly the characterization; none of the characters sounded like the same voice in a different body. When they collect these issues into a trade paperback, I’ll be buying a number of copies to give to friends and loved ones who question why I love comics.

You’ll be missed, Nadia and you Agents of GI.R.L.  Here’s hoping that Marvel keeps you in the limelight somewhere in their universe.

DOCTOR WHO: THE NINTH DOCTOR ONGOING #15

“Give the people what they want. They want the time war… ARGH… I’ll give them the time war! All the pain, all the suffering, all the fear, all the regret…”

Addison Delamar is setting up an astonishing auction. One that boggles the mind, in a matter of speaking. The item for sale: The Doctor’s memories of the time war! The villains in line for bidding are The Harrigan High Command, Church of the Evergreen Man, Queen Shreeker, and via holo-link, The Cybermen. Somebody pulls a fast one, and all hell breaks loose.

This is the final issue of a storyline focused on Captain Jack Harkness, imposters, a Slithleen-type suit, 54th Century social media, and a Sin-Eater. As a Doctor Who fan, I’m really late to the game reading these. So far Titan Comics is generating comics for the Third, Fourth, Eighth, Ninth, Tenth, Eleventh, and Twelfth Doctors, and there’s a Ninth through Twelfth Doctor crossover in the works.

I liked it. And if you’re a fan of the show, I dare you not to hear the voices of Christopher Eccleston, Billie Piper, John Barrowman, and Nicholas Briggs as you read their respective characters.

THE NEWSBOY LEGION AND THE BOY COMMANDOS SPECIAL #1

“Since the mask and cape crowd ain’t here to do their duty on the home front it’s up t’us to keep the war from coming home!”

The Boy Comandos come to New York following the trail of a secret Axis agent, and are met with resistance by the one and only Newsboy Legion!

This is one of the many one-shot issues being featured by DC this year, this being the year of Jack Kirby’s 100th birthday. Kirby created both the Boy Commandos and the Newsboy Legion, and both groups are handled quite nicely by Howard Chaykin. The issue also includes a reprint of an original Newsboy Legion story from Star Spangled Comics #29, 1944.

I’m going to search out some of these other Kirby tribute books. This is a great homage to Kirby, and the reprints give us contemporary readers and collectors a chance to see the history of the fandom we all enjoy so much.

GENERATIONS: BANNER HULK & THE TOTALLY AWESOME HULK #1
Not to be outdone, Marvel is also doing a series of one-shots. Not on Jack Kirby stories, but rather a series of books featuring team-ups of their classic and current character incarnations. The Hulk has always been one of my favorite Marvel characters, so I couldn’t NOT pick it up!

Bruce Banner! Amadeus Cho! The Vanishing Point! TWO Hulks battling the Army! Not to be missed, I’m thinkin’!  Marvel says rest assured, these stories aren’t a part of continuity, but could affect future storylines nonetheless. Which is another way of saying that it’ll depend on sales and reader responses.

As long as neither Amadeus nor Bruce starts yelling “Hail, Hydra,” I’m okay with it.

Okay, that’s it for now. I’ll keep an eye out for you on Wednesdays, and let me know what books you’re into. I love adding cool books to my pull list. Until next time….
