Captain, Scientist, King: Chris Pine Is Keeping Busy

Chris Pine, the captain of the Enterprise in the Star Trek reboot movies, is keeping busy.  New photographs have been released from the set of Outlaw King, currently filming on location in Scotland.  Pine plays Robert the Bruce, the King of Scots from 1306 to 1329.

Outlaw King is due to be released on Netflix in 2018.  A Wrinkle in Time, where Chris Pine plays scientist Alex Murry, father of Meg and Charles Wallace, is currently in post-production and is due to be released March 9, 2018.  And of course, there is an untitled Star Trek sequel in the planning stages, in which Chris Pine will reprise his role as Captain James T. Kirk and Chris Hemsworth (Thor in the MCU) will play his father George S. Kirk.

Hi there – Also Chris Hemsworth played Jim’s father in the first Trek, not his brother, and there was a rumor he would reprise that role for #4 but nothing confirmed.

Chris Pine is not the only actor in Outlaw King with science fiction and fantasy experience.  (In addition to playing Jim Kirk, Steve Trevor, and Alex Murry, Pine was also the voice of Jack Frost in Rise of the Guardians.) The movie features several actors from Game of Thrones.  Stephan Dillane, who plays Edward I of England, was Stannis Baratheon in Game of Thrones and Merlin in King Arthur.  Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who plays James Douglas, was Quicksilver in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ford Brody in Godzilla, and Kick-Ass in Kick-Ass and Kick-Ass 2.  James Cosmo is playing Robert the Bruce’s fatherTony Curran will be playing Angus og MacDonald, (he was the Invisible Man in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Vincent van Gogh in Doctor Who, and Datak Tarr in Defiance).  James Cosmo has been given the role of Robert the Bruce’s brother – Cosmo was Jeor Mormont in Game of Thrones, Dawson in The Seeker: The Dark is Rising, Father Christmas in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and Angus MacLeod in Highlander.  Although well known in his native Scotland, Cosmo only came to the attention of American audiences in Trainspotting and Braveheart.

I’m doing Outlaw King for Netflix and it’s a huge film – a $120 million budget. All of that money is being spent in Scotland and the knock-on effect of that will be enormous.  There will be a huge amount of tourist traffic coming to see where it was made and it just shows how important film-making is in Scotland. It’s going from strength to strength and is great to see.

Will you be watching Outlaw King to see Kirk and Quicksilver?  Will you be watching to boost the Scottish economy?  Or will you be watching because it looks like it’s going to be an exciting movie?
