Video of the Day: Star Wars Fan Film “Hearts of Kyber”

Today’s Video of the Day is Hearts of Kybera short Star Wars fan film that tells the tale of three Jedi padawans who, frustrated with the lack of training from their master, seek kyber crystals in a forbidden cave.

Everything about this film is as good as the filmmakers could make it. From the perfect character and costume design to the well crafted yet fresh-faced performances, it’s a joy to watch. The effects are superb, and they even play with the addition of what we think are the Watchers of Tarentum, originally created for the game Star Wars: The Old Republic (if we have this wrong, please let us know in the comments below).

“The strongest stars have hearts of kyber.” — Chirrut Îmwe

Star Wars movies today are made by people who were just kids when the first one came out in 1977. Today, they’re skilled professional grade film makers and artisans, recreating their passion on the screen, and sometimes finding themselves within a stone’s throw of achieving their dreams of working on a Star Wars film. And then there are those who just can’t wait to be anointed by the powers that be to work on the real thing, and just go off and do it themselves anyway. This is one of those films, and passion for the material oozes from every frame.

Hearts of Kyber comes from a line by the Force sensitive warrior Chirrut Îmwe, in the movie Star Wars: Rogue One.

The short subject was produced and directed by Chet Abbot. It was written by Brad Lewandowski, and stars Bronwyn Morril as Jordyn, Karalynn Dunton as Kira, Jeremy Mathew Smith as Tarmus, and Brad Lewandowski as Master Ellis.

It’s a tour de force, even including aerial photography, used to great effect in the establishing shots in the opening sequence. The remarkable music was by Ian Arber, who clearly has a future in this. The effects were done by Sean Williams of Alpha Dogs, with additional effects by Timothy Nolan and Parker McCabe. The whole thing is a Pretty Much Boys production, and we can’t wait to see what miracle they pull off next.

To the entire production team, thank you for a miraculous little film.

May the Force be with you all.
