In the original 1933 movie , Kong is captured and brought back to New York to appear on Broadway. That there is now going to be a real Broadway production of King Kong is a nice bit of cultural recursion. The play debuts November 8, 2018 at the Broadway Theater (1681 Broadway) in New York, with preview performances beginning October 5.

And they’ve just announced their first principal casting. And it’s a musical.

Christiani Pitts plays Ann Darrow

Eric William Morris plays entrepreneur and filmmaker Carl Denham

Christiani Pitts, currently starring in A Bronx Tale on Broadway, will star as Ann Darrow, and Eric William Morris, who played Sky in Mamma Mia!, will play Carl Denham. The giant ape himself will come alive via a mix of robotics, puppetry and stagecraft.  In a way, it hearkens back to Dino De Laurentis’ giant mechanical ape as used in the 1976 remake, but pulling the whole thing off in front of a live audience is a gorilla-sized challenge.

Based on the 1932 novel, the stage production of King Kong is a contemporary take on the classic tale of beauty and the beast. The story follows a young actress, Ann Darrow, and a maverick filmmaker, Carl Denham, as they voyage from the bustling streets of 1930s New York to an uncharted island to capture the world’s greatest wonder. At the center of this 21st-century reimagining: a 20-foot high, 2,000-pound gorilla brought to life by a team of seamlessly integrated artists and technicians. King Kong is a larger-than-life encounter with a legend that’s always been too big to contain.
