1st Look: “Star Wars Resistance” Trailer #1

Resistance spy and aspiring pilot Kazuda “Kaz” Xiono (Christopher Sean) soars in Star Wars Resistance!

Kazuda Xiono takes flight! At long last, Lucasfilm Animation has released a trailer for Star Wars Resistance, the studio’s third half-hour series, which will premiere Sunday, October 7, at 10 PM EDT/PDT, on Disney Channel, Disney NOW, and Disney Channel Video On Demand, with later airings on Disney XD.

According to Lucasfilm:

In the one-hour premiere titled “The Recruit,” Poe and BB-8 assign newly-appointed spy Kaz to the Colossus, a massive aircraft re-fueling platform on an Outer Rim water planet, home to colorful new aliens, droids and creatures. While undercover, Kaz works as a mechanic and lives with Poe’s old friend Yeager — a veteran pilot who operates a starship repair shop run by his crew: Tam, Neeku and their old battered astromech droid, Bucket. Kaz soon finds himself in over his head with his newfound friend BB-8 as he’ll have to compete in dangerous sky races, keep his mission a secret from his newfound family, and avoid the danger of the First Order.

In the trailer, we see Poe accompany Kaz, our protagonist, to the Colossus. Young Kaz dreams of flight, and he’ll be taking to the skies soon enough. His mission for the moment, however, is to ascertain the loyalties of the denizens of the Colossus. Apprehensive though he is, he soon finds himself working alongside Yeager, who wants no affiliation with the Resistance, and racing Torra Doza, who seems to be every bit the ace Kaz wants to be. Here’s a look at some of the people Kaz will meet on his journey!

Kazuda “Kaz” Xiono (Christopher Sean), nervous about his new undercover assignment, is reassured (or not) by Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac).
Pilot and starship mechanic Jarek Yeager (Scott Lawrence) may be an old friend of Poe Dameron, but he is skeptical of Kaz and his cause.
Neeku Vozo (Josh Brener) and Tam Ryvora (Suzie McGrath) work in Yeager’s shop, alongside…
…Bucket, apparently the latest in a line of plucky droids who won’t take sass from cocky organics. If K-2SO’s spirit lives on, it does so via Bucket’s blow to Kaz’s face.
While racing pilot Torra Doza (Myrna Velasco) likes to be friendly with her competition in the Colossus sky races, it won’t stop her from leaving them in a trail of vapor.

Rounding out the cast in addition to these core protagonists, Gwendoline Christie will reprise her role as Captain Phasma, joined by Jim Rash and Bobby Moynihan as Resistance quartermasters Flix and Orka, respectively (Rash has indicated that the names’ similarities to Felix and Oscar of The Odd Couple are not coincidental), Donald Faison as the aptly named Hype Fazon, and Rachel Butera as General Leia Organa.

As with all good Star Wars trailers, this one is packed with Easter eggs for fans to find and dissect as we wait out the last stretch of our Resistance anticipation. Here’s a few of my favorites:

Is that a Naboo N-1 starfighter painted on the side of Kaz’s ship? Maybe this hints that he’ll try spinning, known to be a good trick. Thanks to Andy Randolph for pointing out that the shape just beside the N-1 is an incredibly familiar silhouette: a YT-1300 freighter like the Millennium Falcon
Gooti Terez of Iron Squadron from Star Wars Rebels seems to be hanging out on the Colossus these days.
Kaz has the symbol of the New Republic, first featured in the Aftermath novels by Chuck Wendig, on his shoulder.
This surly barkeep is a Crolute, the same species as Unkar Plutt from The Force Awakens. If you’ve ever wondered what a blobfish would look like with lipstick and blush, this is your time.
Torra Doza’s racing ship (right) appears to be an R-41 Starchaser, from the classic computer game Star Wars: TIE Fighter.
What’s that symbol over Tam’s shoulder? It has its origins in early Boba Fett concept art from The Empire Strikes Back by Joe Johnston.

Star Wars Resistance was created by Dave Filoni, veteran supervising director of The Clone Wars and executive producer of Star Wars Rebels. It is executive produced by Athena Portillo (The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels), Justin Ridge (The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels) and Brandon Auman (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles). Amy Beth Christenson (The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels) serves as art director.

I’m as ready as Kaz to take to the skies and fight the First Order, and I hope you are too. We’ll all get our shot when Star Wars Resistance zooms onto our screens in October.
