"Doesn't matter what the press says. Doesn't matter what the politicians or the mobs say. Doesn't matter if the whole country decides that something wrong is something right.

This nation was founded on one principal above all else: the requirement that we stand up for what we believe, no matter the odds or the consequences.

When the mob and the press and the whole world tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth. And tell the whole world--"

"No, you move."

Earth Week 2009 – Mission Accomplished!

Welcome!

Welcome to the Justice League Unlimited’s KRYPTON RADIO web site, currently being used by Earth Week 2009′s security team.  Stay tuned to this site for further developments – there’s more to come!

Mission Accomplished!

Thanks in part to the efforts of our combined teams, and despite having been given only four day’s lead time in which to assemble all the teams, build a web site and set up the security schedule for an entire week’s festivities, Earth Week 2009 went off without a hitch.

Moreover, we made history.  This was the single largest cooperative effort among peacekeeper groups in the history of Second Life, uniting in one cause not only the Justice League Unlimited, but every other active Lantern group as well.   Congratulations everyone, on a job well done, and thank you to everyone who participated!

Special thanks to the following team leaders and their teams:

  • Maverick Grunfeld, team lead, Justice League Unlimited
  • Nomad Parx and Siobhan McCallen, team leads, The Blue Lantern Corps
  • GreenLantern Excelsior, team lead, Green Lantern Core
  • Jessi Castaignede, team lead, The Star Sapphire Core
  • Kohaku Owatatsumi, team lead, The White Lantern Corps
  • Tsu Goodliffe, team lead, Whiteheaven Clan

And of course, a very special thanks to Any1 Gynoid, for trusting us with such an important mission in the first place.

– Kalel Venkman, Justice League Unlimited

Security Tips

These are the security recommendations we used to help Earth Week run safely and efficiently.  Read on!

Notice: Some groups are trying to use IRC channel for security channel discussion, and have posted IRC access information where it can be read by anyone.  Please do not use IRC for security channel communication. This communication method is not being used by Earth Week Security, and its use is very strongly discouraged. It has the following insurmountable problems:

  • It is inherently insecure: there is no way toprove anyone’s identity in IRC.  This fact makes it simple to pretend to be anyone.  The friend you think you’re talking to in IRC may not actually be that person.  Worse, people can log on and simply log chat and relay it to griefer gangs they may be members of.
  • It is inaccessible to the average user: nowadays, many ISP’s block its use.  Without special software, most users cannot access it. The dominant operating system, Windows, does not feature any facility for using IRC, requiring a separate software download.
  • It is obscure: Most computer users are simply not versed in its use.  Remember that a lot of your team members are not strongly gifted in the use of  the more technical tools the internet has to offer, or may not be able to view SL and an IRC chat window at the same time.

A communications channel that cannot be used by everyone on the security team simply balkanizes and isolates team members from other members of the same team.  The security problems IRC presents is how
most internet griefer gangs are brought down, including many that used to plague SL.  Take a note from this, and avoid its use.

Identifying Griefers

Avatars who are just at your event to grief will stand out.  Here are some common traits to watch for:

  • Griefers often fly. The reason for this is that they’re generally planning on shooting or caging someone, and that’s best done from the air.  In particular, most griefers use cheap, commonly available weapons and look as though they are armed in some way.
  • Griefers tend to be a day old, or very young. This is not a hard and fast rule, but taken with other indicators, they can help you identify who is there for the event and who is there to cause trouble.
  • Griefers tend to wear either default clothing from the SL library, or outrageous avatars intended to shock. They are usually engaging in attention seeking behavior, and will wear such things as oversized sexual organs, grossly oversized hair or other body parts, or dress as cartoon characters when everyone else around them is roughly human in appearance.
  • Griefers will immediately try to distract everyone else from the main event and try to become the main event themselves. If you see somebody doing this, ask them to stop and have a seat.  If they refuse, bounce them out quickly, sending them home if possible.  If they refuse on first request, chances are the second and third request will go unanswered as well.
  • Griefers sometimes have names containing racially or sexually intolerant verbal imagery. This, again, is to provide shock value.  Their intent is to offend and outrage.  If you’re offended and outraged, it worked.

Prevention

Apart from having someone on staff with estate or parcel management powers, the most effective things you can do against griefers are preventative.  Griefers require certain conditions in order to grief:

Access

They have to be able to get in.  This is obvious, but if a griefer cannot gain access to your parcel he cannot grief it.  Estate bans are most preferable, where possible.  On the mainland, this is not possible – as a secondary choice parcel bans are effective.

Ability

Most griefing tools require that the griefer be able to bring something out of his inventory (nearly all griefers are male) and rez it to produce the desired effect.  Turn off Create Objects and Object Entry for non-group members on your parcel(s).  This will stop 90% of what a griefer can do before it starts.  You can find this setting on your parcel controls in the “Options” tab.

Turning off non-group scripts is an extra measure you may take, though this will disable nearly everything your guests bring in as well as shutting down Earth Week HUDs for the volunteers.

Security Contacts

Security for the week’s events was being managed through the Justice League Unlimited, with the assistance and active participation of several other groups.  Here are the group contacts:
