"Doesn't matter what the press says. Doesn't matter what the politicians or the mobs say. Doesn't matter if the whole country decides that something wrong is something right.

This nation was founded on one principal above all else: the requirement that we stand up for what we believe, no matter the odds or the consequences.

When the mob and the press and the whole world tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth. And tell the whole world--"

"No, you move."

Rosedale Returns as CEO of Linden Lab

kryptonspecialreport

Mark Kingdon (“M Linden”) Steps Down

by Kalel Venkman

Posted this morning on the Second Life official blog was a message from Philip Rosedale, who returns as CEO of Linden Lab, creator of the popular online MMO called Second Life.  Rosedale is assuming the role of temporary CEO while a new more permanent choice for the position can be found.  Mark Kingdon is stepping down.

Second Life’s 7th Birthday celebration is currently underway in-world.  Kingdon was supposed to deliver a keynote address on Saturday, but failed to appear.  Rosedale filled in for him, repeating his own speech from the same morning and offering, in part, an apology for the lack of performance and responsiveness from the Linden Lab support and development teams.  Rosedale views the recent 30% staff cuts as changes that were unfortunate, but necessary.   In his remarks, Rosedale commented that lack of attentiveness to development and socio-economic issues had been one of Linden Lab’s recent failings and that they were working to correct these issues.

Public reaction to the news of the cuts had resulted in a temporary spike of the dollar against the Linden, seeing the value of the Linden drop to a four year low of about $300L per US dollar.  Linden Lab was quick to buy back enough Lindens to stabilize the in-world economy, noted for being the largest stable virtual economy in the world. Last April  Linden Lab reported their best first quarter in their history, with over $160M in user transactions in-world.

Here are Mr. Rosedale’s comments as posted on the Second Life blog:

Mark Kingdon is going to step down as CEO, and I am going to return as interim CEO, working side-by-side with former CFO Bob Komin, who is being promoted to COO.

This is a big, tough change but one the board of directors and management team deeply believes in.  We owe Mark great thanks for the many things we’ve accomplished in these last two years — most notably a great improvement in the stability of Second Life, and also the hiring and nurturing of a strong team of new leaders who are now ready to do some amazing work together.

Our thinking as a team is that my returning to the CEO job now can bring a product and technology focus that will help rapidly improve Second Life.  We need to simplify and focus our product priorities — concentrating all our capabilities on making Second Life easier to use and better for the core experiences that it is delivering today.  I think that I can be a great help and a strong leader in that process.

It is an honor to have a chance to help more directly again, and I come to this mission with energy, excitement, and an open mind about what we need and how we need to do it.  I want to see Second Life continue to grow, amaze, and change the world.  It’s what gets me up in the morning.  Despite the challenges of such a big change, I am happy to be drafting this blog post while sitting in our San Francisco office, surrounded by the many Lindens who have made it all possible.

More to come, as soon as we all get settled and figure out how best to work together!

Modular Systems Hacked

kryptonspecialreport

Woodbury University Hacker(s) Claim Responsibility

by Paladin Proto

Sometime in mid-April, the web site belonging to Modular Systems was hacked. Modular Systems is the creator of “Emerald”, the immensely popular third party client for Second Life.  Exposed was the inner workings of a prototype system undergoing limited tests within Second Life.  The tests appear to have taken place primarily on a region known as Emerald Point, a region operated by one of the members of the Modular Systems development team known in-game as Fractured Crystal.

The now-discontinued project compromised was called “ModLink”, and was being developed to ban griefers based on their IP addresses.  ModLink was very similar to other currently existing systems that work the same way,  TheBoris Gothly’s “RedZone” being one such system.

The database stolen did not contain passwords or other identifying information other than IP addresses (and a correlation of which accounts were being used from the same IP addresses, identifying probable alts), so the most part security threat to the general public  is considered minimal at best.

No real life information belonging to any of the users of the famed Emerald client was exposed, apart from an identification of some people’s alternate accounts. In their public response, Modular Systems recommends changing passwords anyway as a precautionary measure.

The griefer gang “Woodbury University”, now banned from Second Life, have claimed responsibility for the break-in.

Evidence of the hacking operation was posted on May 11, 2010, on a Second Life-specific blog called “The AlphaVille Herald”, known for its heavily anarchist and anti-establishment bias. A very busy stream of comments followed the article, and  a subsequent discussion appeared in SLUniverse. The information was apparently gained by actively hacking the Modular Systems web site and extracting a password from a poorly protected PHP file owned by Fractured Crystal.

The attack may have been in response to growing public unrest regarding the allegedly shady past of some of the participants in the Modular Systems development team, specifically and chiefly that of Fractured Crystal himself.  Crystal is a self-admitted former griefer, and now writes security systems and tests exploits for Linden Lab as a representative of Modular Systems.  However, the attack may also have been spurred by personal conflicts between Crystal  and various members of the Woodbury University griefer gang, since the attackers also purportedly hacked into Fractured Crystal’s Second Life account and rummaged through his inventory.

Modular Systems had released their own statement the same day, stating that while the materials stolen were a private project and not operated by Modular Systems, but that because the site had been compromised, they were recommending that everyone using their service change their passwords and that they had taken steps to ensure the security of the site moving forward.  They also took the opportunity to state that Emerald viewers do not store or forward login credentials to Modular Systems.

First “Memorial Day for Missing Children” May 25

Missing Childrens' DayAnnouncing the first SL “Memorial Day for Missing Children”  by Initiative Vermisste Kinder CIC

In celebration of International Missing Children’s Day, May 25th, Initiative Vermisste Kinder is sponsoring a day of music, poetry and memorial celebrations.  Come to the arena area of the ROF Coalition Island from 9:30am slt – 4pm slt. For this special event!

The Initiative Vermisste Kinder CIC will provide information on the subject and host performances by well-known Second Life musicians and poets. During the event, a limited edition forget-me-not flower by SL artist Bryn Oh  will be sent to the community. This special creation will only be given out at this event. In addition, we will light candle-light-hearts as a memorial and release white & blue balloons, a symbol for each missing child. This year the main theme on the International Missing Children Day, especially in Germany and USA, will be Parental Child Abduction, to commemorate the missing and their families.

About the project in SL

The Second Life celebration of  the International Day for Missing Children was created by pure chance, or some might say – fate.  Anneli Ulrik initially looked into SL to write about how businesses in SL relate to business in RL but a forum entry about the Initiative for Missing Children caught her eye and captured her heart. After writing a short email to CEO Lars Bruhn Anneli was put in charge of the project in Second Life. At first there were concerns about legalities but the enthusiasm and commitment of the SL residents overcame those fears. As Anneli  walked around SL she saw many stores  but felt there was something missing  That is when the idea was born to give these missing children the same kind of exposure, with the creation of Liftfasssaule. These display kiosks show pictures of current missing children and give a phone number for consulting with the staff of Initiative Vermisste Kinder CIC. The hope is to raise awareness and find these missing children. Anneli continues to search SL for sites to place these display kiosks (Liftfasssaule). This memorial day celebration is another way to inform the public. Anneli says, “ There is so much potential that remains unused. I want my work to inform and sensitize people to this topic. Thanks to all the helpers, sponsors. Without their help, the Initiative in SL would not be where it is now.”
