The CW’s ARROW

Also premiering in October on the 10th, is DC’s Green Arrow coming to The CW in the form of a live action drama called ARROW.

From The CW: After a violent shipwreck, billionaire playboy Oliver Queen was missing and presumed dead for five years before being discovered alive on a remote island in the Pacific. When he returns home to Starling City, his devoted mother Moira, much-beloved sister Thea, and best friend Tommy welcome him home, but they sense Oliver has been changed by his ordeal on the island. While Oliver hides the truth about the man he’s become, he desperately wants to make amends for the actions he took as the boy he was. Most particularly, he seeks reconciliation with his former girlfriend, Laurel Lance. As Oliver reconnects with those closest to him, he secretly creates the persona of Arrow – a vigilante – to right the wrongs of his family, fight the ills of society, and restore Starling City to its former glory. By day, Oliver plays the role of a wealthy, carefree and careless philanderer he used to be – flanked by his devoted chauffeur/bodyguard, John Diggle – while carefully concealing the secret identity he turns to under cover of darkness. However, Laurel’s father, Detective Quentin Lance, is determined to arrest the vigilante operating in his city. Meanwhile, Oliver’s own mother, Moira, knows much more about the deadly shipwreck than she has let on – and is more ruthless than he could ever imagine.

The series stars Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen, Colin Donnell as Tommy, Katie Cassidy as Laurel Lance, David Ramsey as John Diggle, Willa Holland as Thea Queen, with Susanna Thompson as Moira Queen and Paul Blackthorne as Detective Quentin Lance. The CW Arrow.

Zelda Symphony

Krypton Radio Newswire

25 Years later it still inspires

Back in 1986 when the original The Legend of Zelda game was released on the 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), game creator Shigeru Miyamoto probably never imagined that some 25 years later his simple story of an elf boy out to save a princess would inspire so many. While Miyamoto’s game has inspired countless sequels and a world wide fanbase, the game also inspired generations of musicians. Koji Kondo, who created the iconic music for the first game and the revised versions is known as an industry legend for video game music, and it was his work that has inspired what could be seen as the ultimate fan-work, with The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses. A full fledged professional symphonic orchestra working in cooperation with Nintendo, is currently touring the United States and performing musical pieces inspired by the adventures of Link in his eternal quest to save Princess Zelda.

The Symphony of the Goddesses currently has tour dates through the end of the year and will be stopping in cities including Houston-TX, San Diego-CA, Orlando-FL, Philadelphia-PA, Vienna-VA, Pittsburgh-PA, San Jose-CA, Toronto-ON, Minneapolis-MN, Boston-MA, Chicago-IL, New York-NY, West Palm Beach-FL, and Miami-FL. Please check their website for exact dates and show times, which are subject to change.

Actors and Artists unite to grant wishes of terminally ill children

Hellboy & one of his biggest fans

Caleb at Spectral Motion

For two young boys who are fighting the ultimate battle, it was a life altering experience to get their wishes granted to visit a major Hollywood special effects studio. Zachary who wanted nothing more than to meet his superhero idol and possibly become him was surprised to meet the legendary Hellboy portrayed by veteran actor Ron Perlman. The Make A Wish Foundation, which aims to help grant wishes of terminally ill children wanting to experience something meaningful; contacted Spectral Motion the special effects studio behind the Hellboy movies, and asked if it were possible to arrange a special day for two children wanting their wishes granted. Spectral Motion not only gladly stepped up to the challenge of helping two of their young fans, but enlisted the aid of Ron Perlman who was happy to reprise his role of the famed Superhero demon Hellboy for this very special occasion.

As any actor who has dealt with the intensive makeup required for movies like Hellboy can attest to, it can take many hours and a lot of patience to deal with the application process. It really showed that Ron Perlman has a heart as big as Hellboy to volunteer for such an endeavor; and in true superhero style he added to the experience by ordering up a massive meal fit for his character of burgers, shakes, and fries for all to enjoy. Later during his visit to the studio Zachary attained the second part of his dream by going for a spin the makeup effects chair and getting a partial transformation into his hero with a sawed-horns headpiece of his very own and some face-paint with special assistance by makeup effects artists Lufeng Qu and Neil Winn.

Spectral Motion also acted as host to Caleb, who wasn’t looking to meet a superhero but instead learn how to make the fictional heroes and other amazing creatures come to life via movie magic. Special effects masters Rob Capwell, Scott Millenbaugh, Mark Setrakian, & Mike Elizalde, helped make Caleb’s experience a memorable one by treating him to a day of visiting the shops of the studio where they design and build some of the amazing animatronic creatures we see in major movies; with artist Tim Gore even donating a few of his books to Caleb from the studio reference library.

LASFS

Krypton Radio Newswire

The Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society is inviting all who wish to contribute and attend a tribute to one of their most cherished members, Ray Bradbury who passed away recently at the age of 91 on June 5, 2012.

In a statement issued by the LASFS:

A beloved member of the LASFS has recently passed.  To celebrate his life we will be holding a Potluck Memorial to reminisce, and talk about how this special and talented man influenced and impacted our lives.

We have lost many an influential and important member of our club over the years, but none with such an affect not only on genre fiction fans but also, on the general public.  His work brought needed attention to the world of science fiction/fantasy literature.

He joined the LASFS as a youth and was guided by such LASFS members and professional writers as Robert A. Heinlein, Henry Kuttner and Jack Williamson.  As quoted by another of our beloved members Forrest J. Ackerman, a founder of the society (Born: November 24, 1916 – Died: December 4, 2008) said in a 1988 Times story, “It’s a wonder that he survived because we were all ready to strangle him,”  ”He was such an obnoxious youth — which he would be the first to admit. He was loud and boisterous and liked to do a W.C. Fields act and Hitler imitations. He would pull all sorts of pranks.”

Memories, video interviews are just some of the things we will have at the memorial.  We hope you will join us in remembering this special man and his works.”

We have a web page for people’s memories of Ray — and for tributes to his writing. It’s currently empty, but once it has some content we’ll put a link to it on the home pages. People should write the webmaster, and we will transfer whatever they write to that page. We hope someone will get copies of any written tributes from the July 7th Memorial and give them to us to put up.

The tribute is planned for Saturday July 7, and will be held at the Society’s Clubhouse at 6012 Tyrone Ave., Van Nuys, CA

You may contact the LASFS at lasfsmktg(at)yahoo.com or call 818-904-9544 for more information.

Space Command

Krypton Radio Newswire

Science fiction visionaries join forces to bring us the future of the past

Bucking the major Hollywood studios, famed television and movie magic makers Marc Scott Zicree, Doug Drexler, and Neil Johnson have united to bring us a new science fiction series called Space Command. It’s not unusual for big names such as these to join up for a tour-de-force of a movie or series, but what has been deemed a unique move is the trio deciding to gather funding for their ambitious project from the every day citizenry through donations.

The project is still under wraps to some degree, as the major details along with a demo video of the movie will be released May 16th. The group seeks to bring us a 1950′s retro styled science fiction action series, without the fear and issues associated with big budget studios trying to control the movie making process. The independent production will get funding via the Kickstarter.com program, and even give the major contributors screen credits and possibly even a guest spot on camera.

Many Star Trek fans know the name Doug Drexler, from his makeup effects work on Star Trek: The Next Generation, all the way to his visual effects work and designing of the Enterprise NX-01. His heart belongs to the future, and his passion has brought us some of the most memorable moments in recent sci-fi history to life, including his breathtaking work on Battlestar Galactica.
