Jen-Usellis-performs-Bite-Me-for-Star-Trek-improv-webseries

Somehow anything is better when performed in the original Klingon.

It’s a little known fact that nearly every significant work in the history of Earth was originally borrowed from a Klingon idea.  Shakespeare, for example, copied his works from an unknown Klingon poet during that poet’s undocumented and unauthorized visit to our planet.

Today’s example comes from Jen Usellis, as conceived and produced by the Improvised Star Trek  comedy podcast.  The popular hit Kiss Me by Sixpence None the Richer turns out to have been translated from the original Klingon for the American ear – in its original form, the song is a tad more violent, and you can hear the traditional DIr ‘In drums carrying the rhythm as you would in a classical war ballad.

In case you don’t actually speak Klingon, don’t worry – the video is subtitled in English.  There is no actual word for “kiss” in Klingon, by the way – the original phrase turns out to be “bite me”, which for a Klingon is approximately the same thing as a kiss would be to a Terran.

Improvised Star Trek follows the voyages of the USS Sisyphus, a less enterprising starship via a biweekly podcast and a monthly live show at the iO Theater of Chicago.

It was translated by Robyn Stewart, Chris Lipscombe, Christopher Kidder-Mostrom, Jeremy Cowan, and Ali Kidder-Mostrom of the Klingon Christmas Carol.

We found a Doctor Who filk video this time.  It’s done by Not-Literally Productions, featuring an equally amazing Matt Smith lookalike in the person of Matt Elliott.

Not Literally Productions is a performing group that produces nerd parody music and comedy sketches based in a variety of fandoms. Ginny and Dana write the material, sing the music, perform in the videos, and handle the web content and marketing. Erik does all the filming, directing, video editing, and visual FX.

Lady S - often imitated, never duplicated.
Lady S - often imitated, never duplicated.

Lady S – often imitated, never duplicated.

Today’s video of the day is by none other than one of fandom’s favorites, Lady Soliloque. Here’s how she describes herself:

I’m a genuine Southern Lady, born and bred. In the mundane world I have a fantastic husband (my Mr. Master), and three wonderful children. In the Multiverse of Fandom my friends call me Lady S and I am Upper Management! I am a writer, an editor, a convention guest and attendee, and I have also been known to make the occasional Fan Video, and I plan fantastical parties. In short, I’m a Fan.

But she’s much more than that.  She’s the author of  Immortalis Venatio: The Immortal Game. She’s also written a series of four Doctor Who fan novels which she has produced as a radio serial, she makes videos, she has a DeviantArt gallery, and she’s constantly making new things for fans to enjoy!

You’re going to be seeing and hearing more of Lady Soliloque on Krypton Radio, on the station, on our web site, and possibly even on our YouTube channel.

In the meantime, enjoy Fandom Goes Boom!

Lantern City Square
A steam powered Krypton Radio news event

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

We’re always excited when actors and writers from our favorite genres come up with something that’s genuinely different, or never been attempted before with such gusto. One such area of sci-fi fantasy to get very little love on the small or big screens is Steampunk. That fascinating alternate reality usually set in a Victorian era England, where steam powered mechanical and clockwork devices reign supreme.

During the 2012 Comic-con, Babylon 5 acting legend Bruce Boxleitner made an announcement that would be heard around the fandom world and excite the Steampunk community. He and a team of fellow Hollywood pros were actually working on a new never before done Steampunk TV series called Lantern City. While it’s never unusual to shock and delight fans of a particular genre with news that a new TV or Movie is coming out, what made this so unique wasn’t just the fact a hardcore Steampunk TV show that had never been done before, but that the show’s creators actually want the fans to be involved in the production.

There are Steampunk stories and even some professionally made media out there, which help bring new fans into the fold all the time, but by in large the Steampunk fan community has been very self-perpetuating and sustaining. That is something which has led to untold amounts of creativity and amazing creations of costumes and other equipment which fans build and sell. Because of the boundless creativity shown by the fans, Bruce has sent an open invitation to the Steampunk community to contribute with designs to help make Lantern City as awesome as possible. Amelia Pond, on the news that the Second Life Doctor Who sim at Katrina was going to be entirely rebuilt using mesh models.

Gallifrey One 2013 is the world’s largest and longest running Doctor Who convention.  It’s held every year around the middle of February, and it just happened again this last weekend between February 15-17 at the Marriott Los Angeles Airport Hotel.

We’ll have more coverage of the convention tomorrow morning, but today we’d like to share 500 Miles of Rassilon, a fan-made video send-up of the original ‘500 Miles’ video done for the 2011 wrap party of the David Tennant era for the Doctor Who television series.  It debuted at Gallifrey One right before the Masquerade.

500 Miles of Rassilon was a joint effort between Krypton Radio, executive producer Lee Almodovar (who was in charge of Operations at Gallifrey One both this year and last year), and a very long list of participants.  If you attended Gallifrey One in 2012, you may see yourself in this video!

Presented here are the 500 Miles of Rassilon video, and the original 500 Miles video upon which it was based.

This whole thing was the brainchild of Lee Almodovar who tirelessly coordinated hordes of people, collected and edited video, and swam through stormy seas of editorial oversight to get this thing done.

We hope you have as much fun watching it as we did making it.

There’s more crazy Doctor Who fun to follow.  Watch this space.

John Nagle as Clark Kent, Erin Brown as Sarah in Jake Thomas' 'One on One'.John Nagle as Clark Kent, Erin Brown as Sarah in Jake Thomas' 'One on One'.

Today’s video is a short subject film written and directed by Jake Thomas called “One on One”. In it, a runaway teenager named Sarah encounters encounters a persistent newspaper reporter named Clark Kent in a Metropolis park.  He won’t leave her alone until she agrees to an interview for his newspaper column. Ten questions — that’s all he asks. In their moments together, the fragments of her tragic life emerge, but her anger towards superheroes and Superman himself explodes in full force. If he is so great and so powerful, why is the world such a horrible place? Why doesn’t he do something about it?

John Nagle as Clark Kent, Erin Brown as Sarah in Jake Thomas’ ‘One on One’.

Jake says he shot the film using Canon DSLR cameras, a Zoom H4N recorder, shotgun mic and portable mixer. Erin Brown plays the runaway Sarah, John Nagle does a very credible Clark Kent.  Thomas’ film really gets to the core of what makes Superman who he is.  It’s not about the powers.  It’s about who you are inside and your connection to others, and Thomas nails it.

This is possibly the best short form Superman film we’ve ever seen.

Enjoy.

There's endless fan made crossovers, there may be Mass Effect/MLP team up somewhere.
Krypton Radio V.O.D double post!

Today we present two new additions to the Krypton Radio playlist, for our diehard video game fans who love BioWare’s Mass Effect, we present the Commander Shepard song by Miracle Of Sound.

Secondly, and while this may be a short one, we couldn’t help but pick up this song (which makes a great ringtone for your phone btw) by Parry Gripp, called Derp Face, made in honor of MLP:FiM fan favorite “Derpy Hooves.” Derpy for those who don’t follow the My Little Pony fandom, is a background character whom became famous for her misaligned eyes and was dubbed “Derpy,” and what would become her catchphrase, “I just don’t know what went wrong” as she became a one pony natural disaster.
