David Bowie’s Space Oddity is one of the modern classics of geek pop, but it’s never actually been performed on location in space – until now.  Chris Hadfield has done a cover of it to mark his return to Planet Earth today aboard the Soyuz landing craft, but rewrites the lyrics a bit so that the ending isn’t so much of a downer.  He really is a good singer, and does the song justice – and watching that guitar floating gracefully down the interior of one of the modules of the pressurized habitat aboard the Internation Space Station gives us chills.

And naturally, you’ll hear this version on Krypton Radio at any time during our broadcast days if you tune in to listen.

Enjoy.

Dr+Demento

The True Story of Doctor Demento

Wind up your projectors! “UNDER THE SMOGBERRY TREES” is the first ever feature length documentary about legendary deejay Dr. Demento!

Before we called it filk, before there was Krypton Radio, before even the Internet itself, there was Doctor Demento. His radio show began on KPPC-FM in Pasadena, California, and has launched the careers of many familiar artists (including most notably Weird Al Yankovic)With just days to go, they need to pick up about thirty thousand dollars to reach their production goal of $100K, and with your help they may just make it. It’ll be a squeaker, as they need a big surge to hit their mark.

“UNDER THE SMOGBERRY TREES” will be an engaging filmed history of “The Dr. Demento Show” from its humble beginnings to its current profound impact of funny music on popular culture, and including current interviews with Dementites (the famous and the nearly famous) connected to and/or inspired by the show over its forty-plus years.

It also serves as the definitive profile of Dr. Demento’s alter ego, the globally respected musicologist and historian Barret Hansen.  Through stories told in his own words, it will follow Mr. Hansen from his 1940′s Minneapolis childhood, to Reed College in Portland, through his Master’s degree in Folk Music Studies from UCLA, and on to donning the heavy top hat of Dr. Demento in 1970 and carrying it into the Comedy Music and Radio Halls of Fame.

The film is being produced with the full participation of Barry Hansen.  He is allowing us to get you a very rare glimpse at both the professional and private man, and see how it is indeed difficult to know where the tuxedo tails begin and where they end.  Barry will tell us stories of his early motivations and inspirations, the history of his musical impact (including his rock band producing days in the 60′s), as well as taking us all into his massive music library (over 250,000 records and counting!) and to his home studio, where he produces The Dr. Demento Show to this day!

If you can, please chip in and support this documentary.  Krypton Radio wouldn’t be here if not for Doctor Demento having blazed the trail first.

Jen-Usellis-performs-Bite-Me-for-Star-Trek-improv-webseries

Somehow anything is better when performed in the original Klingon.

It’s a little known fact that nearly every significant work in the history of Earth was originally borrowed from a Klingon idea.  Shakespeare, for example, copied his works from an unknown Klingon poet during that poet’s undocumented and unauthorized visit to our planet.

Today’s example comes from Jen Usellis, as conceived and produced by the Improvised Star Trek  comedy podcast.  The popular hit Kiss Me by Sixpence None the Richer turns out to have been translated from the original Klingon for the American ear – in its original form, the song is a tad more violent, and you can hear the traditional DIr ‘In drums carrying the rhythm as you would in a classical war ballad.

In case you don’t actually speak Klingon, don’t worry – the video is subtitled in English.  There is no actual word for “kiss” in Klingon, by the way – the original phrase turns out to be “bite me”, which for a Klingon is approximately the same thing as a kiss would be to a Terran.

Improvised Star Trek follows the voyages of the USS Sisyphus, a less enterprising starship via a biweekly podcast and a monthly live show at the iO Theater of Chicago.

It was translated by Robyn Stewart, Chris Lipscombe, Christopher Kidder-Mostrom, Jeremy Cowan, and Ali Kidder-Mostrom of the Klingon Christmas Carol.

We found a Doctor Who filk video this time.  It’s done by Not-Literally Productions, featuring an equally amazing Matt Smith lookalike in the person of Matt Elliott.

Not Literally Productions is a performing group that produces nerd parody music and comedy sketches based in a variety of fandoms. Ginny and Dana write the material, sing the music, perform in the videos, and handle the web content and marketing. Erik does all the filming, directing, video editing, and visual FX.

Listen for Through Time on Krypton Radio!  And watch the video too, it’s really top notch.  Enjoy.

Anything for the Superkids Yo.

This 1948 Republic Serial starred Kirk Alyn, the first actor to portray the Man
of Steel. For millions of movie-goers, his was the face and voice of Superman.

The Last Son of Krypton and Earth’s Greatest Hero is 75 years old today!  It’s on this day that Action Comics #1 was released, the comic book that introduced Superman to the world. Lois Lane, the feisty reporter love of his life, was also featured in the same story.

The iconic character that would form the kernel of our modern superhero mythology was born from the minds of two comic book geeks still in high school – writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Schuster  (Lois Lane was based on Jerry Siegel’s real life love interest Joanne Siegel who became his wife).

Over the years, Superman has appeared in virtually every medium, beginning with the famous radio serial and moving  television, movies, video games, apps and an amazing array of pop music, much of which we play here on Krypton Radio.

Cleveland mayor Frank Jackson has declared April 18 to be Superman Day in that city.  Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster were living in the Glenville area in Cleveland when they created the comic book hero in 1938.
To commemorate the event, these events are planned:

  • Superman flag will be raised on the steps of Cleveland City Hall with Superman in attendance
  • Lights on city hall and the Terminal Tower will be blue, red, and yellow
  • Cleveland Hopkins International Airport will have cupcakes for travelers and a birthday card for the hero at its recently-installed Superman Exhibit
  • City’s website and social media sites will feature citizen tributes to Superman

The proclamation will take place Thursday at 1 p.m. on the front steps of Cleveland City Hall.

MTV Geek will be celebrating the birthday all day long. Such celebrations are happening all over the country, the internet is vibrating with the news.  Perhaps in these dark times, we turn in our hearts to symbols of hope.

Happy Birthday, Superman.  We sure need you now.
