Tom Baker's Cats

Krypton Radio Video Of the Day!

Sometimes it’s hard to call it a matter of opinion, but it does indeed seem like cats are slowly taking over the world. First our real world, then our beloved internet. Now we find evidence that they’re out to conquer time and space itself, by softening the hearts of a certain Time Lord. Doctor Who actor Tom Baker has an enduring love of our feline friends, and this wonderful compilation video shows us just how much.

Tom Baker portrayed the famous Gallifreyan from 1974 to 1981, spending seven years enthralling audiences of all ages and introducing us to his quirky fun loving incarnation of the Doctor.

It’s a Doctor Who / Aliens crossover fan film series, and done entirely for fun and the love of it.  The first of the films was finished in 2010 to great acclaim from the British Doctor Who fandom community.  Now they’ve just completed another, the second installment in the series.

This being a fan film allows the creators to do things with the story that couldn’t be done otherwise because of the normally unsolvable licensing issues – the other half of this equation is Ridley Scott’s Aliens films, who provide the all too necessary monsters for this Who epic.

Ryan Hendrick writes and produces, and has cast himself in the title role, breaking a long tradition of exomorph actors – but he establishes himself quickly as The Doctor and you don’t look back.  It could so have been a disastrous decision, but Hendrick knows his abilities and pulls it off well.

The Doctor, of course, has a companion – and in this case the role of Ade is played by Natalie Clarke, who brings a quirky sense of humor and a vibrant energy to the screen which perfectly counterpoints this more thoughtful incarnation of the Timelord she travels with.

Given that we have to wait till November to see the next episode of the real series, and that after the Christmas Special we’re going to be waiting until August of 2014 to see any more, Doctor Who – Besieged couldn’t have come at a better time.

They’re even mimicking the prequels and teasers the BBC releases prior to their own series airing, and to great effect.  They’re really going for the full simulcrum of the Doctor Who experience, and it works astonishingly well.  In fact, if you’re reading this, Steve Moffat, you could do worse than cast this fellow in the real show.

Have a look at this first prequel for the first film – we’ll be showing you this in pieces over the next few weeks, just as the BBC would do.  We realize you can just look it all up on YouTube, but we want to have a little fun with it too, signing ourselves up for a little bit of make believe.

We’ll show you more tomorrow.

“Knowledge through Pop Culture”

rebeccahouselThe first female scholar in the United States to focus on comics, Dr. Rebecca Housel, is appearing on The Event Horizon this evening at 9pm PST, 12AM EST!  Join hosts Gene Turnbow and Susan Fox as they engage Dr. Housel in a fascinating discussion of popular culture, our influence on it and its influence on us. We talk about everything from sparkly vampires to zombies, societal need for superheroes to gender bias in fiction, and we can tell you now that of all the guests we’ve had on the show, she is one of the most entertaining, informative and  knowledgeable speakers on the topic of popular culture and how it shapes our lives.

Housel, who celebrates her 18th year in the classroom in 2012, is a freelance writer and editor. Her recent titles in Wiley’s Pop Culture and Philosophy series includes work on X-Men (2009), Twilight (2009, 2010), and HBO’s Emmy-winning series, True Blood (2010, 2011). Housel’s work in medical narratives has earned her inclusion in the Directory of American Poets and Writers as well as a sponsored membership by New York Times Bestselling author, Rebecca Skloot, in the National Association of Science Writers (NASW).

Housel is on the Editorial Advisory Boards for the Journal of Popular Culture and Journal of American Culture; her most recent book review for the Duke University Press volume, Sex and Disability (2012), can be found in the Journal of American Culture. Dr. Housel was one of 100 American writers invited to participate in Yale’s Inaugural Writer’s Conference for her work in medical narratives in June 2012; she was also a TED speaker in June, presenting, “Why Story is the Best Medicine,” on how using the patient’s narrative can save not only thousands of patient’s lives each year, but has the potential to save millions in health care dollars, too.

She also teaches writing classes called The Hero in Popular Culture.

Tune in at 9pm PST / 12am EST today to hear Dr. Rebecca Housel, the Pop Culture Professor!

The show reprises Sunday 4pm PST / 7pm EST.

From the official BBC Doctor Who web site:

Doctor Who - Series 7B

Matt Smith as Doctor Who; Smith achieved rock star status in the four years he portrayed the Doctor. The Christmas episode will be his last.

The BBC is today announcing that Matt Smith is to leave Doctor Who after four incredible years on the hit BBC One show. Matt first stepped into the TARDIS in 2010 and will leave the role at the end of this year after starring in the unmissable 50th Anniversary in November and regenerating in the Christmas special. During his time as the Doctor, Matt has reached over 30 million unique UK viewers and his incarnation has seen the show go truly global. He was also the first actor to be nominated for a BAFTA in the role.

Matt quickly won over fans to be voted Best Actor by Readers of Doctor Who Magazine for the 2010 season. He also received a nod for his first series at the National Television Awards, before winning the Most Popular Male Drama Performance award in 2012.

Matt has played one of the biggest roles in TV with over 77 million fans in the UK, USA and Australia alone!

Matt Smith says: “Doctor Who has been the most brilliant experience for me as an actor and a bloke, and that largely is down to the cast, crew and fans of the show. I’m incredibly grateful to all the cast and crew who work tirelessly every day, to realise all the elements of the show and deliver Doctor Who to the audience. Many of them have become good friends and I’m incredibly proud of what we have achieved over the last four years.

Having Steven Moffat as show runner write such varied, funny, mind bending and brilliant scripts has been one of the greatest and most rewarding challenges of my career. It’s been a privilege and a treat to work with Steven, he’s a good friend and will continue to shape a brilliant world for the Doctor.

The fans of Doctor Who around the world are unlike any other; they dress up, shout louder, know more about the history of the show (and speculate more about the future of the show) in a way that I’ve never seen before, your dedication is truly remarkable. Thank you so very much for supporting my incarnation of the Time Lord, number Eleven, who I might add is not done yet, I’m back for the 50th anniversary and the Christmas special!

It’s been an honour to play this part, to follow the legacy of brilliant actors, and helm the TARDIS for a spell with ‘the ginger, the nose and the impossible one’. But when ya gotta go, ya gotta go and Trenzalore calls. Thank you guys. Matt.”

Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer, says : “Every day, on every episode, in every set of rushes, Matt Smith surprised me: the way he’d turn a line, or spin on his heels, or make something funny, or out of nowhere make me cry, I just never knew what was coming next. The Doctor can be clown and hero, often at the same time, and Matt rose to both challenges magnificently. And even better than that, given the pressures of this extraordinary show, he is one of the nicest and hardest-working people I have ever had the privilege of knowing. Whatever we threw at him – sometimes literally – his behaviour was always worthy of the Doctor.

But great actors always know when it’s time for the curtain call, so this Christmas prepare for your hearts to break, as we say goodbye to number Eleven. Thank you Matt – bow ties were never cooler.

Of course, this isn’t the end of the story, because now the search begins. Somewhere out there right now – all unknowing, just going about their business – is someone who’s about to become the Doctor. A life is going to change, and Doctor Who will be born all over again! After 50 years, that’s still so exciting!”

Having starred alongside three different companions, Amy Pond (Karen Gillan), Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) and most recently Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman), Matt’s Doctor has fought Daleks and Cybermen, as well as Weeping Angels in New York. Regularly heard shouting ‘run’ and ‘Geronimo’, through Matt’s Doctor fans have been introduced to a new culinary combination – fish fingers and custard!

Matt’s spectacular exit is yet to be revealed and will be kept tightly under wraps. He will return to BBC One screens in the unmissable 50th anniversary episode on Saturday 23rd November 2013 – TUNE IN!

We’ll have exclusive quotes from Jenna on this site tomorrow and a special video from Matt – coming soon!

The big question now is, who’s going to be the next Doctor? How can they possibly top the portrayal of Matt Smith? There is even some speculation among the fans that they might choose a woman for the role this time, though no one at the BBC has commented on this or suggested that it might be a possibility.

cryptohistorians

You really really don’t want to miss this weekend’s episode of The Event Horizon at 9PM PST, 12AM EST because in this one we talk to the creator of a new steampunk web series project called The Crypto-Historians. Veteran Star Trek screenwriter Jimmy Diggs is the creator, producer and screenwriter the new series, and he is joined by none other than – wait for it – none other than Tuvok himself, actor Tim Russ!

Science fiction writer and war veteran Jimmy Diggs has written more episodes of “Star Trek” than any other freelance writer in the history of the franchise and has been called, “the Jackie Robinson of ‘Star Trek’ writers.” This January, Jimmy debuted a preview of the teaser-trailer of his new Steampunk (TV/web) series “The Crypto-Historians” as part of “Her Majesty’s Steampunk Symposium” aboard the historic “Queen Mary” in Long Beach, California.

In this action-adventure series, a hit man from the future, an inventor from the present, and a hero from the past must join forces and travel to the 1890’s to stop the “War of the Worlds” from becoming a reality. They will use the time travel secrets of H.G. Wells and Nikola Tesla to change history and prove that, “The future is in our hands.” Along the way, they encounter some of history’s most dynamic figures: 28 year old Madame Marie Curie, 40 year old Teddy Roosevelt, 22 year old Harry Houdini, 16 year old Albert Einstein, and even an 8 year old Adolph Hitler!

Tim Russ has a unique role in the project – he’s been cast as the remarkable Corporal Eugene Bullard, the only black fighter pilot in World War I, who in The Crypto-Historians  plays a pivotal role in the unfolding of a secret history never before told.

Steampunk is the fastest growing yet most underserved genre of science fiction today. “The Crypto-Historians” is a character-driven series that entertains as well as educates. It teaches that those who fail to learn from history are not just doomed to repeat it – they are just doomed.

Don’t miss The Event Horizon with Jimmy Diggs and Tim Russ, Saturday night at 9PM PST, 12AM EST – it replays Sunday at 4PM PST / 7PM EST. Krypton Radio’s Gene Turnbow and Susan Fox host.

bayconSteve and Vesteria Stilson had no idea what they were in for when they attended the Krypton Radio special presentation at BayCon 2013 this year.  They found themselves pursued by a large blue-green alien creature with tentacles and far too many legs – they ran inside what looked like a phone booth to escape, and discovered to their surprise that it was far bigger on the inside that on the outside.

A careless moment later, they were careening through time and space in an accidentally stolen Type 40 – and we caught the whole thing on audio.

Steve and Vesteria Stilson had volunteered to be the voice actors in our first experiment producing a short radio show right at the convention, and did their performance with no rehearsal and no retakes.  They were amazing!

The panel was a nice success, with a small but enthusiastic attendance.  During the session, we did the impossible: we wrote, directed, acted, recorded and finished a radio play from scratch, right there in the panel, complete with music and sound effects!  The TARDIS escape sequence featuring Steve and Vesteria was the result.

Mr. and Mrs. Stilson received a copy of the Browncoats CD Firefly Drinking Songs by the Bedlam Bards and Marc Gunn as a prize for their participation.

Want to hear it?  The play / download link is immediately below, right on this article, and you may hear it playing during the day on Krypton Radio during the next week as well.

Look for us at more conventions this summer.  The next person to be famous on Krypton Radio may be you.

Tell your friends about Krypton Radio.  It’s sci-fi for your wi-fi!
