  • "Justice League: Doom" Releases Feb 29, 2012 February 21, 2012

    by Gene Turnbow

In last week’s installment, we let it slip that we were at the west coast premiere of the new Warner Home Video direct-to-video movie Justice League: Doom.  We were there to interview the cast and crew at the Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills, California last Thursday, February 16.  The movie, to be released February 28, 2012is an adaptation of Mark Waid’s “Tower of Babel” story from the JLA comic.  It was produced by Bruce Timm and directed by Lauren Montgomery, and is the final DC Universe film to be scripted by the late, great Dwayne MacDuffie.

The grand reunion of actors who provided the voices of the Justice League for the cartoon of the same name and its follow-up, Justice League Unlimited, includes Kevin Conroy (Batman: The Animated Series) as Batman, Michael Rosenbaum (Smallville, Breaking In) as Flash, Susan Eisenberg (Superman/Batman: Apocalypse) as Wonder Woman and Carl Lumbly (Alias) as J’onn J’onzz/Martian Manhunter. Bumper Robinson (A Different World, Transformers: Animated) joins the cast as Cyborg.

The Justice League faces two sets of villainous teams in the film – The Royal Flush Gang, and a newly formed Legion of Doom, headed by Vandal Savage. These are voiced by  three voice acting alumni of the Justice League animated series: Phil Morris (Smallville, Seinfeld) as Vandal Savage, Olivia d’Abo (The Wonder Years) as Star Sapphire, and Alexis Denisof (Angel) as Mirror Master. There’s also  Carlos Alazraqui (Reno 911) as Bane, Paul Blackthorne (The Dresden Files) as Metallo, and Claudia Black (Farscape, Stargate SG-1) as Cheetah. David Kaufman (Danny Phantom) is back as Jimmy Olsen. It’s probably the darkest Justice League film I’ve seen in a long time.  Batman, ever five moves ahead of everyone else, has figured out scenarios for nullifying each of the members of the Justice League should they go rogue.  Unfortunately, the plans fall into the hands of Vandal Savage, who has even bigger plans once the League is out of the way.  The look of the film reflects the theme of betrayal that brings the League to the brink of destruction, with Batman as the indirect cause.  Nobody animates on celluloid sheets anymore – it’s all done digitally.  Yet, somehow, they’ve managed to bring a remarkable look to the scenes.

People talk endlessly about the “silver screen”, but few today know what that means.  If you’ve never seen Casablanca projected from an original nitrate print, it had this shimmery, silvery quality to it that you only got from nitrate film.  In this video excerpt featuring Batman and his butler Alfred, you can see something of this ineffable, almost indescribable visual quality.  The whole film looks this beautiful – and yet, it’s traditional, hand-drawn animation.

We got to talk to Tim Daly (Superman), Phil Morris (Vandal Savage / Martian Manhunter from Smallville), Susan Eisenberg (Wonder Woman), Voice Director Andrea Romano, and the film’s Director, Lauren Montgomery.

Tim Daly spoke on how he breathed Superman to life for his reprised role as the Man of Steel, and the iconic importance of the character.

Susan Eisenberg talked about her relationship with her character as it has developed and matured over the years.

When we spoke to Lauren Montgomery, she did confirm that the next film will be called Superman vs. The Elite. She said that she wasn’t going to be working on that one, but that it was already in production.

It was a real treat to speak with Andrea Romano.  The spark for a film has to come from somewhere.  Of course, it does have to start with the screenplay, and the director has a lot to contribute as well (some directors contribute almost at the level of being a film’s author. After speaking with Andrea, though, I think I know where the film’s vital spark comes from.  Watch the video of the interview and see if you agree.

Phil Morris was a delight. This isn’t the first time he’s played Vandal Savage, having had the role in the Justice League series, but he offered interesting comparisons between this role and his part on Smallville as J’onn J’onzz, the Martian Manhunter (Carl Lumbly plays the Manhunter in this film, not Morris). draws themas well as being a student of the humanities, arts and sciences.  I don’t think there are any examples of his work on the ‘net anywhere – we may be able to get him to show us some of it at some point, if he’s amenable. Here are the interviews. Enjoy.

  • RIP John Severin February 15, 2012
    Krypton Radio Newswire

Hall of Fame artist John Severin, one of the last of the legendary EC artists, has died at age 90. Severin—whose sister Marie was also a famed artist and colorist for Marvel—was among the greatest draftsmen of the EC crew. Severin was especially well known for his Western comics, which were meticulously researched and elegant in their line, but also drew barbarian comics.  His humorous work for  Cracked Magazinealmost singlehandedly  made it a worthy competitor for MAD Magazine.

The family has released a statement:

Internationally acclaimed illustrator-?cartoonist, John Powers Severin (1921-? 2012), passed away Sunday, February 12, 2012 at his home in Denver, Colorado with his family by his side.

    He was 90 years old.

Throughout his sixty plus year career in comic illustration and cartooning, Severin gained world-wide notoriety and is regarded by many fans, friends, historians, and colleagues as a truly distinctive and brilliant artist.

Long-time  friend  and  former  president  and  chairman  of  Marvel   Comics,  Stan  Lee  states,
“He  had  an  art  style  that  was   uniquely  and  distinctly  his  own. The  minute  you  looked  at  his  artwork  you  knew  you  were  looking   at  a  John  Severin  illustration;  it  could  be  no  one  else. Besides  his  inimitable  style,  there  was  a   feeling  of  total  authenticity  to  whatever  he  drew,  whether  it  was  a  Western,  a  crime  story,  a   superhero  saga  or  a  science  fiction  yarn. Not only was his penciling the very finest, but his inking, too, had a distinctive Severin touch that made every strip he rendered stand out like a winner”.

Talents like John Severin come along once in a lifetime.  He will be missed.

  • IDW's Doctor Who / Star Trek Crossover Starts May 2012 February 14, 2012
IDW Doctor Who / Star Trek Cover Art

"Excuse me Doctor - whoever you are. You're sitting in my chair."

“Excuse me, Doctor – whoever you are.  You’re in my chair.”  – Capt. Picard

The rumors are true, and the geekosphere is a-buzz with the news of the latest comic book crossover that many thought could never happen (and purists on both sides possibly wished never would).  IDW Publishing — rights-holders for comics adaptations of a range of licensed properties, including Who and Trek — has announced the forthcoming Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who: Assimilation2, which will throw together the crews of the Tardis and the Starship Enterprise for the first time. Looking at the leaked cover, it’s not hard to guess who the villians in the story are going to be – Cybermen and the Borg.  They pretty much both assimilate people, so it’s a pretty natural fit.  The issue will be written by people who have worked on separate comics for both Trek and Who: Scott and David Tipton (Star Trek: Infestation) and Tony Lee (Doctor Who). It will be drawn by J.K. Woodward, who worked on Fallen Angel.

Since IDW acquired the rights to publish Doctor Who comics in 2008, fannish wags have perpetuated the rumor that  a crossover of some kind might eventually happen . The rights surrounding the BBC’s Doctor Who TV series has been a much more challenging hurdle to overcome than  than most of the other series that IDW runs.

The series is set to launch in May 2012, although American readers will have an easier time getting issues than their U.K.-based counterparts.  Doctor Who is rare among U.S. comics series in that its issues can’t be sold on the direct market in the United Kingdom.  Panini, publishers of the long-running Doctor Who Magazine, have exclusive rights to print Who comic strips, which means IDW can’t touch it domestically.  In practice, however, issues of IDW’s previous and current series have made it over as imports — so U.K. residents will still be able to get their hands on the books if they watch the import shops carefully.

“By joining these two sci-fi powerhouses, fans will be taken on the ultimate adventure through time and space,” said Liz Kalodner of Trek owner CBS in the official press release, with the BBC’s Soumya Sriraman adding that, “This is a perfect partnership for not only Doctor Who‘s incredible fans, but also for the brand.”

Neither party, however, would be drawn on the question of whether the Doctor or Captain Picard makes the better cup of tea.

  • Space:1999 Reboot - Marked Down from $24.95 February 10, 2012

ITV Studios America and HDFILMS are resurrecting Space:1999 – but adding a century.  Because, you know, 1999 isn’t the future anymore..

    by Gene Turnbow
    Space 2099

'Man's giant leap was just a stumble in the dark', this Space 2099 poster proclaims. Frankly, we think Neal Armstrong got it right the first time.

It was cute – it wasn’t Star Trek, but it was all we had, so we watched it.  Space:1999, the British sci-fi series by Gerry & Sylvia Anderson (Supercar, Captain Scarlet, Thunderbirds), ran for only two seasons and aired between 1975 and 1977.  It was done on a television budget, but it was the most expensive show ever done for TV to date.  ITV Studios America and HDFILMS are rebooting the show.

Now, I know there are a lot of Space:1999 fans out there.  Or there were.  Remembering that as this TV show was going out, the whole world was going nuts for Star Wars and promptly forgot all about what they’d just been watching.  I’m sorry about what happened to the TV show, I truly am.  But sometimes a show is canceled for a reason.

On Space:1999, 321 crewmembers living in a moon base are suddenly thrust into space due to a nuclear explosion which drives the moon away from Earth at breakneck speeds.  And I’m not exaggerating here – to push the moon out of Earth orbit and out of the Solar System would have required so much explosive force that the first thing that would have happened would have been the utter liquification of the entire natural satellite we’ve come to know and love.  And depend on, you know, for the tides and all that.

Now if you can get past the liquification problem, the next issue is that this happened while people were going about their business on the moon base.  These people went from about 0.13 G to several hundred times the force of Earth-normal gravity in a microsecond.  This should have reduced the entire population of the moon base to strawberry slime coating the decks – yet somehow, Barbara Baine simply ended up lying on her back and passing out, and her underwire bra didn’t even deform.

    That’s some bra.

Then after that, calling the show science fiction is just the icing on the cake.  But the show had the best visual effects anyone had ever seen on television, and that’s probably what kept it on the air as long as it was.

“Science fiction is a powerful format capable of visualizing the human condition in thought-provoking ways,” HDFilms president Jace Hall reecently told the Hollywood Reporter.  He’ll spearhead the effort and serve as an executive producer, assuming the project sells. It’s the development phase and has yet to be shopped to networks, and with any luck this is the last we’ll hear of the project - like the Doctor Who reboot we wrote on last November..  Mr. Hall clearly doesn’t understand what he’s working with, and probably really isn’t clued in to what science fiction really is.

“While we are indeed re-imagining the franchise and bringing something new and relevant to today’s audiences,” continued Hall, who recently revived V at ABC, “I feel strongly that some of the overall tones set by the original Space: 1999 television show represent an exciting platform to explore possibilities.”

Like figuring out why Barbara Baine’s boobs didn’t flatten under 350 G’s of acceleration.

The Hollywood Reporter also spoke to ITV Studios International’s managing director Paul Buccieri: “After more than 35 years, we are thrilled to be developing a new vision of our much beloved franchise for audiences worldwide. Historically, the Space: 1999 brand has entertained and fascinated millions of people.”  What he fails to note is that the show really only succeeded because it filled the gap between Star Trek and Star Wars.  It was riding the toe of the wave, shooting the curl.  But they’re not going to get that wave back again, and like SOPA, PIPA and ACTA, no amount of rewriting is going to put a golden shine on this turd.

  • Space Nazis... Damn... February 10, 2012

Finnish WW2 Science Fiction Dark Comedy “Iron Sky” to Hit Theaters April 4th

    By Staff Editor Critic, PK

World War 2 is no laughing matter, unless you happen to be Finnish Director Timo Vuorensola and Producer Tero Kaukomaa, the makers of the new WW2 inspired science fiction dark comedy Iron Sky. Star Trek fans and dwellers of the net, may remember Vuorensola for his break out Trek parody sensation Star Wreck: The Pirkinning. In his new big budget project, Vuorensola introduces us to the idea of “what if Nazis’ had escaped into space just as Germany was losing the 2nd World War?”

I’ll admit that I wasn’t a fan of Star Wreck, it was impressive as far as the CGI used in it but you could tell it was more of a major fan project. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve seen some fan work that far surpasses Hollywood’s attempts at film-making, but the acting made me shiver in pain a bit (although that could have been the point). That being said, after seeing some of the previews for this movie, I’ve gotta say that this looks like a 5-Star winner. Being a lover of science fiction and general weird and dark humor, I’m calling this a must see!.

In the last moments of World War II, a secret Nazi space program evaded destruction by fleeing to the Dark Side of the Moon. During 70 years of utter secrecy, the Nazis construct a gigantic space fortress with a massive armada of flying saucers.

When American astronaut James Washington (Christopher Kirby) puts down his Lunar Lander a bit too close to the secret Nazi base, the Moon Führer (Udo Kier) decides the glorious moment of retaking the Earth has arrived sooner than expected. Washington claims the mission is just a publicity stunt for the President of the United States (Stephanie Paul), but what else could the man be but a scout for the imminent attack by Earth forces? The Fourth Reich must act!

Two Nazi officers, ruthless Klaus Adler (Götz Otto) and idealistic Renate Richter (Julia Dietze), travel to Earth to prepare the invasion. In the end when the Moon Nazi UFO armada darkens the skies, ready to strike at the unprepared Earth, every man, woman and nation alike, must re-evaluate their priorities.

This film is not yet rated, but I’m projecting a minimum of PG-13 for adult language and violence.

  • Superhero Summer at the Theaters February 8, 2012

The summer of 2012 will be the summer of the blockbuster superhero movies, most of them Marvel.  Are you ready?

    by Gene Turnbow

This summer is a paradox. Industry comic books are in serious trouble at the news stands in terms of sales, but the characters they spawned are huge at the box office and pushing what’s loosely termed as the entertainment industry to new heights – but if there was any question that being a scifi geek has now become socially acceptable, the sheer number of movie trailers shown during the Superbowl this year should lay the issue to rest.

    Let’s have a look at what’s coming.

    John Carter

A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs took a century to become a motion picture after many abortive attempts. The absolutely dreadful Princess of Mars from 2009 featuring ex-porn star Traci Lords had so little to do with the original story that it doesn’t count, despite Burroughs estate having apparently agreed to allow his name to appear in the writer’s credits.  What could they have been thinking?  We haven’t seen this new film yet – it’ll be in theaters March 9.

    The Dark Night Rises

Eight years after the events of The Dark Knight, the terrorist leader Bane arrives in Gotham City, pushing it and its police force to their limits, forcing its former hero Batman to resurface after taking the fall for Harvey Dent’s crimes.  This film will be the end of director Christopher Nolans’ Batman trilogy, and will be Christian Bale’s final appearance in the title role.  By 2014 there will be a new director and a new lead actor bringing the world’s greatest detective to life once more, but the two-fisted punch of Bale and Nolan will be one tough act to follow.  The Dark Knight Rises releases July 20.

    Chronicle

What happens when a bunch of irresponsible teenagers get superpowers? Lord of the Flies with nuclear weapons, apparently. In this cynical twist on the superhero genre, three high school friends gain superpowers after making an incredible discovery. Soon, though, they find their lives spinning out of control and their bond tested as they embrace their darker sides. I sure hope this isn’t as lame as it looks.

    The Avengers

I could practically write a book about The Avengers and what it took to finally get us all to the point where every comic book fan on the planet, whether they’re Marvel boosters or not, is anxiously awaiting the release of a movie about The Avengers.  Films about all the Avengers have been piling up, and somehow they’ve managed to make them all ranging in quality from “hey, pretty okay” to “OMG, you have gotto see this!”  This trailer premiered on Superbowl Sunday.  Best two lines of dialog in a trailer so far:

    “I have an army.”

    “We have a Hulk.”

    Booyah.

Look for The Avengers on May 4.

    The Amazing Spider-Man

Toby McGuire moves aside to make room for Andrew Garfield in the title role of this new offering directed by Marc Webb and featuring Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, is more of a prequel than a sequel, giving us a peek into Peter Parker’s past.  Ever wonder exactly what ever happened to his parents and why he lives with Aunt May?  The Amazing Spider-Man swings into theaters July 3.I can’t resist a comment on the suit – the thing looks like it’s made of melted cargo netting, and has to be the most uncomfortable thing in the world to wear.  Garfield deserves a medal.

    Iron Man 3

Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down..

To be fair, this film hasn’t even started shooting yet, and isn’t slated for release until next year.  It was announced as a project only a year ago (February of 2011), is currently untitled. Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson and Gwyneth Paltrowhave all been signed to reprise their signature roles. Shane Black directs, and this is a surprise, because he’s more known for screenwriting than directing. Writers are usually given a shot at directing when the studio feels that there’s little chance the franchise could be screwed up by a mediocre director – which may mean that we’re nearing the end of the Iron Man cycle of films. So if it hasn’t started filming yet, how, you may be wondering, did we get our hands on a trailer for it?  Well, it wasn’t easy.  We were told that this is some really early footage, and probably contains scenes that will not appear in the final film.

I think the biggest problem we’re going to have is that we’re going to want to see pretty much every one of these films. We may even want to see them all in 3D, because probably most of them are going to be offered that way. The only trouble is going to be how much that’s going to cost.

Let me whip out my pocket calculator here.

What? Yes, I still have one.

Okay – $14 each for a family of four, plus popcorn and drinks, times four must-see blockbusters (if you don’t count Chronicle), that comes out to – holy crap.

For a family of four, seeing these four films (I’m obviously not counting Iron Man 3 either) with popcorn and drinks will set you back something in the neighborhood of $350.  That’s a whole lot of fan devotion they’re counting on. I think a lot of us may be waiting for them to come out on Blu-Ray, and then waiting a year after that for them to hit the bargain bins, no matter how good they are.

I was recently asked whether 3D movies are really better, or did I think they were just overhyped?  The answer is definitely “overhyped”.In nearly all cases, if you see the 2D version of the film you don’t miss the 3D – except in the case of the Transformers movies where the scene is so busy that if you don’t see it in 3D, you can’t pick foreground from background. Very often the 3D is an effect added afterwards, meaning the film wasn’t even composed for 3D in the first place – so why would you want to see it screened that way?

There’s a limit to how much we as consumers can be expected to absorb – hey, Hollywood, are you listening?  You want us back in the theaters?  How about just giving us a break on the price of those tickets?

  • Who Is John Carter? February 8, 2012
by Susan L. Fox   Hollywood, Jasoom1

A Princess Of Mars, book cover, Frank FrazettaJohn Carter.   A gentleman of Virginia, back when that meant the world to a man’s identity and pride.  A former Army Captain on the Confederate side of the American Civil War in a postwar career mining gold in Arizona, and a lonely death, injured by Apaches, looking up at the Red Planet gleaming in the cave mouth as he bleeds his life away.

He wakes up in an unknown land where he is captured by green warrior giants, whom he impresses with his feats of strength, born of physique molded in Earth’s greater gravity.  And therein begins the saga, stretching across 11 novels and certain literary history.

Edgar Rice Burroughs found himself in a situation in 1911 which might seem familiar to readers in 2011 and beyond.  Flat broke, with a young family to feed, he worked a tedious office job that left him many hours of waiting, so he spend time at his desk reading pulp magazines [being as Facebook had yet to be invented].  At some point, the light went on in his head and the feeling that he could write this stuff.

A Princess of Mars, pulp illustration, 1921UNDER THE MOONS OF MARS was serialized in ALL-STORY MAGAZINE in 1912.  That was his first fiction sale.  His third fiction sale was TARZAN OF THE APES, creating a character and scenario that have lasted nearly a century now.  Burroughs probably invented the now-common “franchise” where a character’s story and image is commercialized through various media.  Tarzan books numbered 26 in all, including TARZAN: THE LOST ADVENTURE, written by John Lansdale from an unfinished draft of Burroughs’ and published by Dark Horse Comics in 1995.  The movies began in 1918 with muscular and bewigged Elmo Lincoln as the king of a silent jungle filmed in the swamps of Louisiana, of all places, standing in for Darkest Africa.  Dozens of versions followed, with varying degrees of faithfulness to the original texts.

The journey leading to the 2012 feature film release JOHN CARTER is as complex as any adventure story.  The stops along the way include ace animator Bob Clampett, father of Daffy Duck and more beloved characters and wacky situations than we can count, contacting the Burroughs estate in 1936 with a serious proposition for the Barsoom series and some test images and footage2.  There was a feature film in 2009 starring the athletic Antonio Sabato Jr., the lush and lovely Traci Lords, the familiar landscape of Vasquez Rocks and a script so bad that the Krypton Radio staff lasted maybe fifteen minutes just to say we tried to watch it.

Announcements of the current production were met with a certain skepticism on the part of us longtime ERB fans, considering the spotted history.  But fans have been won over slowly and surely with casting notices featuring actors who can really act, snippets of footage of the Tharks and other inhuman characters, Space Ships and Ray Guns and some really noteworthy characterization by Taylor Kitch who really sells the man from the 1870’s, lost and finding himself again.

So John Carter, why is his name up in lights?  Tarzan gets his name on the movie marquis and nobody says, “Who’s that?”  Maybe by the time the sequels appear, John Carter will do the same.

1 That’s “Planet Earth” to you and me.

  • Marvel Comics Goes After Second Life Vendors February 6, 2012

Spotty Takedown Panics Virtual Business Owners

    by Gene Turnbow
Second Life vendors earn unwanted attention from Marvel Comics for recreations of characters like these.

Second Life vendors earn unwanted attention from Marvel Comics for recreations of characters like these.

Last week vendors using the online marketplace for the popular MMO Second Life were treated to a number of takedown notices from Marvel Comics for offering avatars for sale that resembled characters from Marvel Comics.  Second Life uses a web-based system which they own and operate to enable users of their service to purchase virtual goods, buildings, room furnishings and custom avatars for use inside the virtual environment.  In all, between six and twelve vendors were affected (the exact number of vendors or items involved isn’t known and was not announced).  Not all items by all vendors were identified for removal.

This is not the first time Second Life has been raided by entertainment companies seeking to protect their trademarks.

    • In April of 2009, the estate of Frank Herbert, author of the Dune series of science fiction novels ordered that all Dune-related materials be removed from Second Life over a two day period.  The Dune roleplayers simply renamed everything and kept going.  Much the same thing happened with the estate of J.K. Rowling regarding Harry Potter themed sims in 2008 – the sims with offending names were removed.
    • On Thanksgiving Day of 2010, Universal City Studios ordered Linden Research, creators and operators of the popular online community, to remove any and all  to remove any and all intellectual content  relating to ‘Battlestar Galactica’  from its grid.  Second Life players complied (having been given little choice) – regions and products named for or presenting items from Battlestar Galactica were removed.
    • On August 19, 2011, in a sobering development for fan creators, Linden Lab  removed Power Rangers merchandise from the Angel Grove Mall in Second Life and from the Marketplace Second Life website.

    A Patchword Response

In each case, while actions were taken by Linden Lab in response to DMCA takedown requests by the various holders of the intellectual property rights involved, in no case was the removal of materials or content from Second Life particularly comprehensive or thorough.  To understand what happened and why, one needs to understand what the DMCA is and how it works. Here are the mechanics in simple terms:

    • An item is identified that potentially violates someone’s copyright.  (In this case it was copyrighted characters.  One cannot copyright clothing, and though what was removed was mostly costumes, it was also technically just digital assets – the appearance of clothing.  And the appearance of an illustrated character can be copyrighted.)
    • The owner of the copyright or their representative specifically identifies where the infringing material can be found.  In this case, it was a web site.  The individual URL’s were reported to Linden Lab.
    • By law, Linden Lab is then required to take down the offending material, whether or not the copyright claim is valid.  The reason for this is that the infringement cannot simply remain in place until ownership has been proven in a court of law, because this would destroy the timeliness of the remedy and render nonexistent any protections.

After that, surprisingly, usually nothing happens.  And the reason is that the complaint has been made regarding the content of the Second Life Marketplace web site, not the actual virtual products themselves.  Legal aides rarely have the horsepower or graphics support in their office machines to be able to enter an online service such as Second Life with its graphics intensive hardware requirements to be able to go into the virtual world and look around for more things to ticket for removal.  Of course, our examples above are noteworthy because Universal, Saban, the Frank Herbert estate and the J.K. Rowling estate all went in-world and did some pretty massive sweeps, but for every one of these major events, there are a dozen or so smaller ones that nobody ever hears about – because they’re picking out individual items instead of whole virtual islands to clean up.

    Don’t Panic

If you are a creator of virtual goods in online services, you needn’t panic.  If you are infringing and you know it, you might want to rethink your business strategy.  If  you believe that what you are making and giving away is Fair Use, you’re most likely right – but be prepared for a takedown notice anyway.  These companies don’t read the fine print, and are big enough not to care.  On the other hand, the ramifications of a takedown notice are pretty simple: the materials in question get taken down, and pretty much that’s all that happens to you.  You’re unlikely to get sued, or fined, or anything else.  The DMCA takedown is the end of the action.

Not all companies are as litigiously minded as Marvel Comics.  DC Comics, for example, is owned by Time Warner, who in turn has a relatively lax attitude about fan recreations of their characters and can’t be bothered with the nickel-and-dime operations inside a virtual world.  A week’s pay for an in-house legal assistant usually exceeds the total profits of an entire year’s work for a virtual business in an MMO such as Second Life, so unless they see something sticking up outside on the internet where they can see it, they generally won’t expend the energy.

Why are they picking on the little guys?  Mostly it’s because they have to.  This seems counter-intuitive, but it’s the way trademark and copyright law both work.  If you own a trademark or copyright, and you see violations of your intellectual property rights and you do nothing about it, you stand to lose the right to defend your own trademarks or copyrights later on when it really counts.  Xerox Corporation failed to do this, and eventually the word ‘xerox’ became a generic synonym for ‘photocopy’. What most think Marvel was doing was going after trademark and copyright violators.  That’s only half right.  They were also protecting their ability to do so later on when it really counts, and they have to make a good faith effort so that they can demonstrate to the courts when the time comes that they actually did.  It’s credibility in the bank.

The bottom line is that if you’re a creator of virtual goods, chances are good you’re not making enough money doing this to really affect a trademark or copyright holder one way or the other. If you’re caught using somebody else’s stuff and distributing it, be prepared for its removal.  On the other hand, getting flattened by the boot of vengeful Galactus is a pretty small probability.

  • Hollywood's Brain-Drain Hits Broadway With "Back To The Future" Musical February 5, 2012

1980′s Movies Being Brought Back as Broadway Musicals – Stop the Madness!

A Random Rant by Staff Editor, PK
(Pulled and re-published, now with extended rant)

As I’m cruising the interwebs, I heard a lot of screaming and crying mixed with a bit of golf clapping. Much to my chagrin, I discovered that Broadway has broken into the 1980′s section of the net and was found pillaging old movie scripts for ideas for new shows. I pulled my web-browser over and hopped out, quickly grabbing one of the Broadway Producers by the shirt and begging him for an answer, “why are you digging up old 80′s movies for shows?” He looked at me with lifeless eyes and pointed to the wallet in my pocket, “money” he groaned like a zombie. The 80′s was a special part of my life; classic Nintendo games, the early days of hardcore movies like Die Hard, and there was just something about a cute girl with chemically irradiated big hair, Swatch Watches and neon green tube socks.

And while I respect that Hollywood has the right to occasionally dig up a good movie and remake it, I have to ask, do you think they’re going a bit far with all the remakes? For every few brand-new movies with original stories, it feels like we’re being inundated with five or six remakes every year or so. Hollywood’s brain-drained obsession with making a fast buck off established stories from 20-30 years ago, has become contagious and spread to Broadway. News has come out that Back To The Future is being strongly considered for adaptation for a Broadway musical, and that sound you just heard is BTTF fans around the world fainting. Now I know I can’t speak for all fans, but this news really just made me groan in pain.

If it was just BTTF it might not be so painful, but word is coming down the pipe that movies  ”Newsies,” “Ghost,” “Big Fish,” “Austin Powers,” “Rocky,” “The Goonies,” and “Dave“, are being developed for the stage. Movie wise, modern day versions of “RoboCop“, “Total Recall“, and what appears to be a 5th installment in the Terminator movie series are being worked on. RoboCop is set to release sometime in 2013, while Total Recall is planned for this year. This is sort of a two-pronged rant on the movie and stage industry, they’ve helped our lives by bringing to the screen and stage, stories that have shaped us and our culture beyond belief. In a way I can understand film makers pulling old movies out of the vault and adding effects or even entire scenes years later, but I think many would agree that it detracts from the original movie and is an insult to those who worked on the film in the first place and to the fans.

I’ve only had brief exposure to the stage works, but have seen some on television. It’s the original form of organized entertainment, and it deserves more respect than taking a bunch of movies (some of which may not translate well) and trying to cram them onto the stage. I think my main gripe is the constant remaking of movies, and those in the stage industry not trying to just come up with their own original works. I admit that it’s extremely hard to come up with purely original content these days, everything is influenced by something else. And that’s not specifically a bad thing, but it makes it harder for people like me to become engaged in the story. Especially when it feels like a retelling of a retelling of something else, ya’know. Now I know that not all of the movies listed above are from the 80′s, but they still don’t deserve the horror of a Broadway treatment, not when there’s perfectly good story-lines out there that are more suited for stage production.

Cinema and Stage fans the world over beg those in power to stop the madness of endless remakes and sequels that are sure to be painful!

These are all excellent movies, but do they need to be remade or sequel’d as movies or Broadway shows?,

    Sincerely,

    One Old Angry 80′s Nerd

  • It's Not Dead, Jim - Star Trek May Be Returning To Television February 3, 2012
Bryan Singer's Star Trek: Federation - the "Trek" that never was

Bryan Singer's Star Trek: Federation - the "Trek" that never was

    by Gene Turnbow

Bryan Singer and Bryan Fuller are currently working on the remake of The Munsters, and the collaboration is going so well the two would like to combine forces and breathe new life into a Star Trek TV series.

Star Trek fans haven’t had a product on the air since 2005, when Enterprise went off the air. While J.J. Abrams has breathed new life into the film franchise, nobody’s been able to get Trek back onto the small screen.  This may be about to change.

Ain’t It Cool News was been contacted by Bryan Fuller (director of Pushing Daisies) who informs the site that:

the two Bryans, who have long (but separately) contemplated new “Star Trek” TV series, have discussed the possibility of pooling their resources to take a new corner of Gene Roddenberry’s multiverse to the small screen.

Fuller is currently the producer on NBC’s The Munsters remake, which was recently retitled Mockingbird Lane. Bryan Singer is on board as the director of the crucial pilot episode. If the show flies, it’ll go a long way toward convincing the bean counters to give them a crack at developing a new Star Trek show.

Before J.J. Abrams rebooted the ‘Star Trek’ film franchise, Bryan Singer was developing a new TV series set several centuries after ‘The Next Generation’ – called ‘Star Trek: Federation.’ This take on Star Trek was to have been considerably darker than the hopeful future upon which the franchise was founded – it would have made the Federation a crumbling shadow of its former self, with a small rag-tag police force wandering the galaxy trying to preserve the peace and keep whatever was left of the Federation from slipping into oblivion. It’s just as well that this version was never pitched – J.J. Abrams had already committed to the Star Trek film reboot in 2009, and Trek was already moving in a different direction, so they decided to shelve the idea.

This is a news story that isn’t a news story.  No script has been written, but the two have stated their intent, and there is definitely some major influence and talent between the two directors.  The world of Star Trek fandom is already buzzing with excitement at the prospect of a new Star Trek show for television, and we think that’s a strong indication all by itself that the public may be ready for one.

  • Comics Spotlight: Claudio Ghirardo's "Untitled" Surprises, Intrigues February 2, 2012
A scene from Claudio Ghirardo's "Untitled"

A scene from Claudio Ghirardo's "Untitled"

    by Gene Turnbow

We often report on independent comics, which are usually off the beaten path.  Superhero comics are great, and we love them, but it’s not all there is.  In fact, real artists draw and paint these, and we forget just how much of the artist there really is in these works. Today we’re stopping and taking a breath and having a closer look at one artist whose work exemplifies the concept of comics as fine art.

Artist Claudio Ghirardo has debuted “Untitled” at Paintedcomic: a drama/comedy series of short, introspective stories where the main character, an enigmatic artist, is usually seen drawing in a sketchbook and the circumstances he confronts and deals with. Some stories are be based from the creator’s real life experiences, some are fictionalized.

Claudio Ghirardo combines his background as a self-taught artist with his sequential storytelling training. Taking his cue from artists such as Bill Seinkewicz, Kent Williams, his childhood hero Frank Frazetta, and many others, Ghirardo plays with the imagery while working to keep the storyline unified. Says Ghirardo, “Doing the kind of comic I want to do would prove too costly to publish. But when I saw the kind of work being done on the web, I realized that this forum was perfect for what I wanted to accomplish!”

Ghirardo’s work crosses the line back and forth between how his characters appear to one another, how they see themselves, and the flow of their own thoughts and impulses in what sometimes seems like effortless stream-of-consciousness writing and design.  The design of the characters breaks with convention, but does not simply discard rules of traditional comic art – instead, Ghirardo creates a new and unique personal paradigm.  Art is in the eye of the beholder, it’s often said, because it’s often as much what the observer thinks about the art as the intention and message conveyed by the artist.  Ghirardo’s work is arresting, sometimes poignant, sometimes humorous, but it always makes you stop and think about what you’re seeing and reading.

“Untitled” will be updated once a month and can be seen at http://paintedcomic.wordpress.com/.

About Claudio Ghirardo: a professional artist who has exhibited his work in many group and solo exhibitions. A  graduate of the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art, he left traditional comics behind him years ago working as a freelance illustrator and then as a painter. He has come back to his first love, comics, and this is his first foray into webcomics.

  • Flying People Mystify New York Citizens February 1, 2012

In one of the most creative movie viral campaigns in recent memory, 20th Century Fox teamed up with viral marketing pro’s ThinkModo to create a wild aerial publicity stunt for the film Chronicle. The film follows three high school students (Dane DeHaan, Michael B. Jordan, Alex Russell) who develop super powers and the havoc that comes with those powers.

“Since the three main characters of the movie have the ability to fly, we came up with the idea of staging a few “flying people” sightings around NYC. We achieved that illusion by having 3 custom-made aircraft (which were shaped like human beings) fly above designated areas in NYC and NJ,” says Michael Krivicka from Thinkmodo.

Check out the video which shows how the team at ThinkModo created the people shaped custom aircraft.

Chronicle feaures visual effects by Rhythm & Hues Studios, and hits theaters on February 3rd.

Now that we’ve shown you what a lot of sites are showing you, we’re going to show you what most sites are showing you – where Thinkmodo got their flying people from.<br /> They didn’t design the things. They probably didn’t even buy the plans available from http://www.rcsuperhero.com for $19.95. They probably bought the deluxe models, fully assembled and ready to fly, for about $345 USD.

    Up, up and away.

  • Fox Business News Takes Aim at Kermit the Frog January 31, 2012
    Krypton Radio Newswire
Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog

Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog

When you think about Kermit the Frog, what’s the first thing that comes to mind?  “Political activist”?  Yeah.  Us either.  But apparently there are some news services appear dangerously unable to make the distinction between fantasy and reality.   Fox News anchor Eric Bolling made the  assertion in December that the puppets were part of liberal Hollywood’s vendetta against oil companies, yet at the same time brainwashing the youth of America against capitalism in general.

They spent a good deal of time on the story.  We realize 24 hours a day is a lot of time to fill, but there actually is real news out there that needs covering.  Instead, we were treated to this report on how the Muppets are being used by the liberal left to brainwash our kids against capitalism.

We don’t know whether to be angry at Fox News, or embarrassed for them. This sort of McCarthy Era shenanigans is something we thought we as a country left behind us in the 1950′s. It certainly puts a pall on Fox News as a reliable and respectable news source, and clearly demonstrates where their money is coming from. You guessed it – big oil.

The Muppets responded to the allegations by Fox that they were pushing “a dangerous liberal agenda” during a press conference on January 28  in the following video shot for Leicester Square TV. The press conference was to promote their most recent film, titled simply “The Muppets”.

“It’s a funny thing- they were concerned about us having some prejudice against oil companies and that I can tell you is categorically not true. And besides if we had a problem with oil companies why would we drive in around the whole film in a gas-guzzling Rolls Royce?” Kermit asked.

Miss Piggy was more combative and political; the puppet added that the charge was “almost as laughable as accusing Fox News of being  … news.”

“Boy that’s going to be all over the internet,” Kermit remarked. “You are going to be in such deep water!”

Miss Piggy went on to say that “if they take what I say seriously, they have a real big problem.”

In December, the film’s director, James Bobin, also fended off the criticism, telling The Hollywood Reporter that, “No, the Muppets are not communist. And the character of Tex Richman is not an allegory for capitalism in any way. The character is called Tex Richman.”

The Muppets grew from initial appearances on television in the 1950′s.  They were created by  Jim Henson and are now owned by The Walt Disney Company. Kermit is voiced by Steve Whitmire and Miss Piggy by Eric Jacobson.

  • Krypton Radio's "1000th Fan" Facebook Contest Winner! January 30, 2012

On January 12, 2012, we announced our “1000th Fan” Facebook Contest, and today on January 30 we have a winner!

That winner is you, Lisa Erb of Dinkelsbühl, Germany! We’ll be sending your CD as soon as we hear from you!

Your prize is a copy of Shawn Tutt’s “No Audible Dialog”. Special thanks to Shawn Tutt for his generosity in providing the prize for our first contest here on Krypton Radio.

Sean’s album features such Browncoat-friendly tunes as  “I’m Leaving You (For a Browncoat)”, “Felicia Day”, and a song about Captain Mal Reynolds’ home planet?  His style ranges from the clearly folk-inspired songs like “Shadow” (the aforementioned song about Mal Reynolds’ home planet featuring wonderful backing vocals from Marian Call) to the whimsical tale of waiting in line for hours to meet Felicia Day, to his more rock-bluesy songs like “Out Here, Out There”. There’s also a strong Mellencamp vibe running through these songs, especially on the chilled rock guitars of “Fall Down”.

Once again, Lisa, congratulations from all of us – and thanks for helping us make Krypton Radio great!

  • Video of the Day: Doctor Who Fan Orchestra's "Rose's Theme / Doomsday" January 30, 2012

The Creative Hearts of Dr. Who Fandom Are Bigger on the Inside

    Krypton Radio Newswire

When something comes along that sparks the imagination and grabs people by heart and brain alike, it often spawns a creative response from the people that make up the fan community springing up around that something.  Today’s Video of the Day is all about that phenomenon, and in this case it’s the Doctor Who Fan Orchestra.  This offering – “Rose’s Theme / Doomsday” – shows one of the things the internet is good for: bringing creative people together so that they can create something wonderful.

So what is the Doctor Who Fan Orchestra? It’s a collection of Doctor Who fans who have formed a virtual orchestra, and they’ve gotten together under the direction of Stephen Willis of Surrey, England. He reasoned that the music of Murray Gold meant an awful lot to an awful lot of people, that a lot of Doctor Who fans were probably musicians themselves. He went about figuring out how to allow fans from all over the world to play some of the compositions written by Murray Gold together as an orchestra, and it worked. Our video today is their third offering. Participants submitted recordings for this work from November 2011 to January 2012.

This final mix includes a total of 177 submissions from 154 individual participants, ranging in age from 11 to 57, and who are located in at least 18 different countries across the world, including: United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, Spain, France, Russia, Brazil, Canada, Finland, Hong Kong, Israel, Latvia, Norway, Poland, Singapore, Sweden and Switzerland.

  • DC vs. Marvel - Dominating Theaters 2012-2014 January 28, 2012

    Holy Sh*t Batman!

    By Staff Editor, PK

If you’re a big fan of superheroes, then you may be like us and having a glee-filled fanboy meltdown over the news that continues to emerge from Hollywood on even more superhero stories coming to the silver screen. Marvel Comics & DC Entertainment have spent decades trying to capture our hard earned nerd money, pumping out some amazing and at times not so amazing shows, movies, and games based on our favorite comics. We could cover the last 50 years of superhero cinematic history, but lets’ just take a look at recent events and work forward. In 2002 Marvel set the bar for superhero movies to an all new high with the big budget modern day adaption of Spider-ManTobey Maguire wowed audiences with his boyish charms and CGI enhanced combat skills, as he fought The Green Goblin.

One decent sequel and one teary-eyed massive flop later, Spider-Man is being reborn as The Amazing Spider-Man starring Andrew Garfield, in an another attempt to retell the story of Peter Parker, the mutant spider, and the worst allergic reaction to a bug bite known to medical science. To be fair this new version of Spidey’s adventures appears to be more of a grittier and somewhat darker telling of the story, and audiences will get to judge for themselves if the web-slinging wall-crawler is meant to stay on the big screen, with the film debuting on July 3, 2012 in theaters everywhere.

2012 & 2013 will be big release years for Marvel in particular, as we see if three big movie franchises can be successfully combined into Marvel’s The Avengers. On their own, Thor, Iron-Man, and The Incredible Hulk, have done very, very well. So far the Iron-Man movies have been amazing, and I think Don Cheadle should have been James Rhodes in the first movie as well. And while they didn’t get a big budget movie treatment of their own, fan favorite characters Hawkeye, Black Widow, Loki, and Nick Fury; will join the Avengers in their quest to save Earth coming May 2012. Most fans know that it’s been traditionally hard to take superhero adventures and make them work on the big screen, especially when you finally get that tight fighting lycra outfit on a real person. But I also think most would admit that lately, Hollywood has really been giving 110% on making live action hero movies that don’t stink.

The big surprise announcement this week, is that Samuel L. Jackson is set to star in a big budget adaptation of Nick Fury’s storyline, estimated to show up in 2014. Does that mean there’s hope that Hawkeye or Black Widow may get their own movie? No word yet, but we’ll keep an ear out for news! Not everyone remembers this, but Nick Fury did have his own television show in 1998. Nick Fury: Agent of Shield  tortured audiences for less than a season, with David Hasselhoff as the legendary SHIELD agent. 2013 will see the debut of The Wolverine(aka Wolverine 2), featuring Hugh Jackman returning as his sweaty claw wielding alter-ego during his adventures in Japan. The Captain America movie may have seemed like one long setup to The Avengers movie, but the Cap is back post Avengers in Captain America 2, set to release sometime in 2014.

Another couple superhero surprises for the 2014 season, is that Deadpool makes its way to the big screen, but with Ryan Reynolds? Reynolds of course played The Green Lantern in the 2011 theatrical adaption, but this does raise some interesting questions if this casting is true. Does this create a conflict of interest? Starring as a superhero for competing companies? We don’t have confirmation of this yet, but I wonder if there would be any contractual conflicts over this. Following up with this, we find the tiny foot prints of Ant-Man and the apparent film version also coming that year. For those not familiar with the Ant-Man story, it does in-fact involve S.H.I.E.L.D, so it’s not too big of a surprise that Marvel appears to be sticking with an overall story-line.

Henry Cavill as SupermanBecause I can see DC waving it’s arms wildly and demanding to be heard, they to having movies coming out this year. The Dark Knight Rises featuring our favorite brooding caped crusader, premiers July 20, 2012. Batman faces off against his greatest foe, Bane! The super steroid freak who in the legendary story Knightfall, breaks Batman’s back and cripples him. Catwoman co-stars in this conclusion to the Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy, which we can only imagine will be as incredible as the first two. 2013 will see the release of Man of Steel, the re-booted re-boot of the theatrical Superman story-line, starring Henry Cavill as the legendary hero. This time around we meet the young 20 year-old something Clark Kent struggling to come to terms with his superpowers and wondering if he’s really the right person to save the world from General Zod, played by Michael Shannon. I know there was some controversy over Laurence Fishburne being cast as Perry White, a black actor playing a traditionally Caucasian  character. My response is, chill people, Laurence Fishburne is a fantastic actor and I don’t see why it’s a big deal for him to play Perry.

DC Entertainment has been slacking a bit on theater releases, but making up for it with television shows and direct to DVD movies such as Justice League: Doom. A lot of work has been done with establishing a partnership with Cartoon Network, in development of animated shows related such as Young Justice and Green Lantern: The Animated Series. DC has been attempting to bring some live action hero shows back to the small screen, sadly they’ve flopped in a big way, with the 2011 Wonder Woman never even making it out of the pilot episode stage.

  • ‘Justice League: Doom’: Free screening in L.A. on Feb. 16 January 27, 2012
    Krypton Radio Newswire
Justice League: Doom (Warner Home Video)

Justice League: Doom (Warner Home Video)

“Justice League: Doom” will make its West Coast premiere on Feb. 16 with a Hero Complex screening at the Paley Center in Beverly Hills with a limited number of free tickets available for fans.

Los Angeles Times’ Hero Complex lead writer Geoff Boucher will moderate a Q&A with the filmmakers and members of the cast after the screening.

“Justice League: Doom,” the latest DC Universe animated original movie from Warner Home Video, takes its core plot from Mark Waid’s memorable “Tower of Babel” story arc (which was published back in 2000 in the pages of DC Comics) although there are considerable differences. In both the comics and film, the world’s greatest heroes are all placed in danger when villains get their hands on Batman’s secret files — which indexes the weaknesses of all his teammates and precise tactical plans for taking them down.

    Justice League:Doom (Warner Home Video)

    Justice League:Doom (Warner Home Video)

The film features Nathan Fillion (“Castle”) as Green Lantern, Tim Daly (“Private Practice”) as Superman, Kevin Conroy (“Batman: The Animated Series”) as Batman, Michael Rosenbaum (“Smallville”) as Flash, Susan Eisenberg (“Superman/Batman: Apocalypse”) as Wonder Woman, Carl Lumbly (“Alias”) as Martian Manhunter and Bumper Robinson (“A Different World”) as Cyborg.  As for the bad guys, there are three alumni of the “Justice League” animated series: Phil Morris as Vandal Savage, Olivia d’Abo as Star Sapphire, and Alexis Denisof as Mirror Master. There’s also Carlos Alazraqui (“Reno 911?) as Bane, Paul Blackthorne (“The Dresden Files”) as Metallo and Claudia Black (“Farscape”) as Cheetah.  David Kaufman (“Danny Phantom”) also reprises his “Justice League” role of Jimmy Olsen.

The filmmaking team includes executive producer Bruce Timm, director Lauren Montgomery, producer Alan Burnett and dialogue/casting director Andrea Romano. “Justice League: Doom” also represents the final DC Universe film script from the late Dwayne McDuffie.

“Justice League: Doom” arrives Feb. 28 as a Blu-Ray Combo Pack or as a DVD; it will also be available On Demand and via download.

To be first to hear about other Hero Complex screenings, follow them on Twitter: @LATherocomplex.

  • "The Avengers" Cologne Set "Do you want to smell like a Superhero?" January 26, 2012

Now You To Can Smell Like a Hulking Green Super Beast

    By Staff Editor, PK

It’s been a while since I’ve stepped into a comic shop, and I knew that they could order almost anything that my geeky little heart desires, but cologne? That’s right folks, you to can now smell like one of Marvel’s The Avengers! Smell like the hulking tank smashing beast who’s been wearing those same purple shorts far past their launder date! Smell like the billionaire playboy who’s spent one too-many hours locked in a metal suit and desperately needs a shower! Smell like… Water lily? Not the fragrance I would associate with Bruce Banner’s sweaty alter ego, but hey, if you make it, nerds will buy it.

From JADS International, LLC., comes The Avengers Cologne Set, with the tag line “Finally four unique fragrances assembled for the first time!“. And forgive my sarcastic nature, but I couldn’t help but suddenly develop this mental image of a skinny nerd with horned rimmed glasses looking bewildered as a beautiful woman blows him off over his offer of a date; standing there with a tear dripping from his eye and thinking, “but I smell like Iron Man, how could she turn me down?”. But believe it or not, if you desire to smell like Captain America, Iron Man, The Hulk, or Thor; all you have to do is hit up your local comic retailer who can order you up a batch for only $59.99.

If you thought JADS International was a familiar name in the geek/nerd world, you’d be right. JADS has also brought us cologne collections involving Star Trek and Star Wars; with scents such as Shirtless Kirk Cologne and Red Shirt Cologne, for when you feel the need to be that expendable unnamed guy in the landing party. But if you’re more in the swinging mood, and want to meld your favorite nerd girl, check out Pon Farr Perfume for Her. Or if she’s looking to be your little Slave Girl to your Jabba the Hut, (bad mental image there) then check out Slave Leia Perfume.

  • Star Trek 2 Filming Begins January 25, 2012

    by Gene Turnbow

    Star Trek's Zachary Quinto

    Star Trek's Zachary Quinto

There aren’t many groups of fans in science fiction fandom older or larger than those who call themselves Trekkies – fans of the famous television series created by Gene Roddenberry which originally premiered on NBC in 1967.  We thrilled to no fewer than ten motion pictures between 1979 and 2002. Though admittedly the quality of the films was uneven, they still retained the essential spirit that made them part of the Star Trek legacy.

In 2009, J. J. Abrams took up the challenge of recreating Star Trek for the big screen, rebooting the franchise by creating an entirely new timeline.  This allowed him to work outside the canon established by all the television shows and the previous films, using the parts he liked and discarding those he found inconvenient.  This film was well enough received that a new film is now in production.  There is no title for the film yet – it will be subtitled, following the convention of all the films since Star Trek: Generations, so as to sidestep the problem of having a second film called “Star Trek II”.

Filming began about a week and a half ago, according to Zachary Quinto, who told E! Online that the cast had not seen the script until about four weeks prior because they were still working hard on “evolving” it.  This is Hollywood speak for “we’re making it up as we go along”, which happens more frequently than one might care to imagine.  It’s especially troubling for such a venerable property as Star Trek, but Quinto seemed happy with the situation.  He also stated that Benedict Cumberbatch, Peter Weller and Alice Eve have been cast in various roles in the film. “All of them have folded in so beautifully and brought a whole new level of intelligence and sensitivity,” Quinto said.

J.J. Abrams, however, has denied a report that Benicio Del Toro will be playing villain Khan Noonien Singh.

Abrams admitted that he was never obligated to direct the sequel. “I was always hoping to, but until I read the script it was hard to be able to say definitely,” he said. “So it was great to read it and get that feeling that you hope to get when you read a script.”

We hope that some of the more annoying problems will have been taken care of with this new film.  The engineering section of the Enterprise should not look like the Anheiser-Busch Brewery in Chatsworth, California with a few stage dressings hastily stuck on (which is what it was).  The danger is that Abrams and company will take the Enterprise a bit too far into the the unknown.  There seems to be no chaperone on this voyage, no Keeper of the Flame to make sure it stays solidly and and reassuredly Star Trek.  The Star Trek purists have a very strong sense of what is and is not Star Trek, and will not tolerate too much experimentation with what has become one of the archetypal stories of our generation.

It’s hard not to look forward to the new film with anticipation, however.  Who wouldn’t want to boldly go where no one has gone before?  The sky beckons.

Star Trek Online 2nd Anniversary Celebration

In related news, February 2 marks the 2nd anniversary of Star Trek Online, and four days of celebration will take place in honor of the event. The events will run from around 10 AM PST on Thursday, February 2, through the same time on Monday, February 6. The master of ceremonies will be Q, and players are encouraged to “log in each day” to “seek out Q at Earth Spacedock or Qo’noS,” where he will find “silly things” for humans to do. Those completing Q’s tasks will win fun prizes.

Two new ships will be released in honor of the celebration. Starfleet command will commission a new Odyssey class cruiser starship. Players who are level 5 or above can obtain one of these ships by completing a mission on a shakedown cruise. The Klingon Defense Force will also launch their own ship, a Bortas (vengeance) class starship at the same time.

According to Star Trek Online, “These two ships will be free to everyone during the event, regardless of level or rank. The ships require you be level 50 to fly them in combat, so characters of lower level will find an item in their inventory that they cannot use until they reach level 50. After the event, these two ships will no longer be obtainable for a while. We have not finalized details yet on when they will return, but we will announce the details once we have them.”

  • DC Entertainment Announces “We Can Be Heroes” Campaign January 24, 2012

DC Entertainment’s Justice League Teams Up to Fight Real World Hunger in Africa

    Krypton Radio Newswire

(Press Release – New York, NY)  DC Entertainment, home of the world’s greatest super heroes, today unveiled an unprecedented giving campaign to fight the hunger crisis in the Horn of Africa. This multi-million-dollar commitment over the next two years will be supported across all Warner Bros. Entertainment’s and Time Warner’s businesses and feature DC Entertainment’s iconic Justice League characters, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg, issuing the call to action, “We Can Be Heroes.” The announcements were made at a press conference today in New York by Barry Meyer, Chairman & CEO, Warner Bros.; Jeff Robinov, President, Warner Bros. Pictures Group; and Diane Nelson, President, DC Entertainment.

We Can Be Heroes will support the efforts of three humanitarian aid organizations working in Africa—Save the Children, International Rescue Committee and Mercy Corps—as part of the global effort to fight the current hunger crisis in the Horn of Africa. The region is suffering its worst drought and famine in over 60 years, with 13 million in need of critical assistance and 250,000 facing starvation in Somalia alone. Each partner organization was chosen for its track record of effective and expeditious humanitarian aid efforts in Africa.

We Can Be Heroes will be supported via promotional exposure across all of Time Warner’s divisional advertising platforms (Warner Bros., Turner Broadcasting, Time Inc., HBO), generating millions of consumer impressions and creating crucially needed awareness of this crisis worldwide. Save the Children, International Rescue Committee and Mercy Corps will equally share a corporate donation of at least $2 million over the next two years comprised of cash donations, employee matching funds and consumer matching funds.

“Warner Bros. has a long history of corporate philanthropy and outreach, and this campaign proudly continues that tradition,” said Meyer. “We are a global company, and this is a global issue. By marshalling our expertise in consumer and fan engagement and creating global awareness, we hope we’re able to inspire others to join us in becoming ‘heroes’ and make a difference in the Horn of Africa.”

The Justice League characters were chosen by DC Entertainment both for their global recognition as well as their demonstration of strength in unity and numbers. The campaign’s graphic identifier features the iconic Justice League characters—Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg—outlined in silhouette against the African continent. Each of these characters is a super hero in his or her own right, but when they band together as the Justice League, they become an unstoppable force for good and right in the universe—a key message of the We Can Be Heroes campaign. While many individuals may feel powerless to effect change on their own, as part of a global campaign such as this, their efforts, combined with those of other donors, can create a world of change.

A key launch element of We Can Be Heroes is the campaign’s website, WeCanBeHeroes.org. Here, consumers can make donations which DC Entertainment will match 100 percent (up to $1 million in donations), purchase specially branded merchandise, with 50 percent of the purchase price going to fight the hunger crisis via We Can Be Heroes , sign up for newsletters and updates, and join the We Can Be Heroes online community. The site will also feature information on each of the partner organizations and updates on current conditions in the Horn of Africa.
“This campaign goes straight to the heart of our core competency, as Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment both have a rich legacy of telling socially relevant, compelling stories with characters embraced by global audiences,” said Robinov. “The fact that we’re able to take what we do and use it to raise awareness—and inspire action—around a cause as important as this is gratifying. With the support of the entire Studio and our Time Warner sister companies, this campaign, like the DC Comics super heroes, will make a great impact on an important issue.”

“The members of the Justice League are an international team of super heroes beloved by a broad range of fans, including men and women, young and old. This makes them the perfect ‘spokescharacters’ for this campaign,” said Nelson. “Their dedication to social justice and commitment to band together to defend the helpless brilliantly supports the ideals of the We Can Be Heroes campaign. The hunger crisis in the Horn of Africa is something we can reverse if we all work together. I’m proud and grateful we’re able to harness the power and standing of the DC Comics brand and iconic characters as well as for the support from both Warner Bros. and Time Warner that has allowed us to pursue this unprecedented initiative.”
“This is a tragic situation affecting millions and millions of people. Everyone has the ability to be a part of the solution and efforts such as We Can Be Heroes help bring us closer to that goal,” said Dr. Jill Biden, who visited refugees in Kenya in August and has worked to raise awareness of the crisis. “I commend the efforts of DC Entertainment, Warner Bros. and other organizations who are using their global reach to help raise awareness of the crisis.”

For more information on We Can Be Heroes, visit www.WeCanBeHeroes.org. For more information on the campaign’s partner organizations, visit their websites: www.savethechildren.org (Save the Children);www.rescue.org (International Rescue Committee) and www.mercycorps.org (Mercy Corps).

  • Connie Willis Wins 2011 Damon Knight Grand Master Award January 22, 2012

Science Fiction Writers of America President John Scalzi writes, “The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America has named Connie Willis, one of the most-awarded and beloved science fiction writers of her generation, as its 2011 recipient of the Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master Award. Congratulations Connie!”

    Connie Willis

    Connie Willis

“When I heard that Connie was going to be named a Grand Master, I was surprised, because I assumed she’d long since been given the honor. It’s overdue and well deserved – congratulations, Connie, and welcome to the club.”

    –Joe Haldeman, 2010 Grand Master

“My most treasured childhood possession is Terry Carr’s 1984 Year’s Best Science Fiction anthology, not least because it contains Connie Willis’s “Blued Moon”. Her writing changed my understanding of what SF is and what it can be: funny, poignant, wise, feminist. And then I read “All My Darling Daughters” and my concept of SF expanded again, in entirely different directions. Thirty years on, I’m still floored by those stories; Willis’s work bears up startlingly well under rereading. It doesn’t rely on shock or in-jokes or other stale devices. It’s just plain smart, and built on the backs of instantly recognizable characters. I’m thrilled that SFWA is honoring such a fine writer and beloved member of the SF community.”

    –Rose Fox, Publisher’s Weekly

I met Connie Willis thirty years ago and have been an eyewitness to her dramatic rise from promising young writer to award-winning professional to a figure of historic importance to science fiction. Although she is well loved for her humor — and deservedly so – it is her stories of desperate people in crisis, of good people confronting evil and of ordinary people finding their nobility that form the foundation of her amazing career. She stands at the very center of our genre and is without question one of the best writers of my or any other generation.

–James Patrick Kelly, 2-time Hugo Award winner.

Being named a Nebula Grand Master is an unimaginable honor–quite literally. When I began writing science fiction as a teenager, my biggest goal was to actually sell a story. My greatest castles-in-the-air fantasy was to someday win a Nebula Award. If you’d told that teenaged girl that she’d someday end up a Nebula Grand Master, with her named linked to those of the authors she worshiped, demigods like Jack Williamson, Ray Bradbury, Joe Haldeman, and Robert A. Heinlein, she’d NEVER have believed it. I’m not sure I believe it. But I’m very, very grateful. And I’m even more grateful that I’ve been able to spend my entire life among the work and the people I fell in love with when I was thirteen.

    –Connie Willis

  • Wizards of the Coast Crowdsources Dungeons & Dragons Reboot January 22, 2012
    by Gene Turnbow

D&D DragonFantasy roleplaying gamers have been waiting for Wizards of the Coast to fix Dungeons & Dragons for a long time.  The game, also called D&D, was originally by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson for TSR Hobbies in 1972Then, as now, it was  played using nothing more than hand drawn maps laid out on quadrille paper by dedicated Dungeon Masters (“DM’s”) and a small collection of dice having varying numbers of faces.  A D&D game then, as now, was a social event, a fun way for friends to spend time together and play often to the wee hours of the morning fighting dragons and orcs, and adventuring in the fantasy world profoundly influenced by J.R.R. Tolkein’s Lord of the Rings.  Imagination was king, and the game is often credited with being the genesis of all modern RP gaming and fundamentally responsible for much of the current computer game industry.

The company does not release sales figures, but analysts and gaming experts agree that sales of the game, and all tabletop role-playing ones, have been dwindling for years. Ryan Scott Dancey, chief executive of the game company Goblinworks and a former vice president at Wizards of the Coast, said the overall market peaked between 1999 and 2003 and has been in steady decline since 2005. “My instincts are it’s slower than ever,” he said in an interview with the New York Times.

D&D has also been the center of controversy in the gaming community due to the various radical revisions of the rule system over its 38 year history.  Basic, Advanced, Advanced 2nd edition, 3.0, 3.5, and most recently 4.0 which made its appearance in 2008. This last version, though, shifted the playing paradigm to combat rather than the roots of imagination that had been the essence of the game’s popularity to that point, and the fans rebelled.  The new rule system appeared more closely modeled on World of Warcraft than anything else, and was seen as a move in a distinctly wrong direction. For the first time, a new version of D&D was not backwards compatible with the older rule sets.  The magic system, used from the beginning, had been discarded.  The open community participation previously fostered by Wizards of the Coast had snapped tighter than Tupperware, and they had stopped listening to the fans in any major regard and tried a bean-counter-driven mimicry of WoW.  The fan’s response was a substantial exodus to other rule sets that bore more substantial similarity to D&D 3.5, such as Pathfinder.

Fortunately for all concerned, Wizards of the Coast has finally recognized that they screwed all this up in 2008, and they want to fix it.  In a January 9 post on their web site they announced that they’re going to have open playtests of the new planned ruleset for D&D 5.0.

    From the Wizards site:

[W]e are excited to share with you that starting in Spring 2012, we will be taking this process one step further and conducting ongoing open playtests with the gaming community to gather feedback on the new iteration of the game as we develop it. With your feedback and involvement, we can make D&D better than ever. We seek to build a foundation for the long-term health and growth of D&D, one rooted in the vital traits that make D&D unique and special.

We want a game that rises above differences of play styles, campaign settings, and editions, one that takes the fundamental essence of D&D and brings it to the forefront of the game. In short, we want a game that is as simple or complex as you please, its action focused on combat, intrigue, and exploration as you desire. We want a game that is unmistakably D&D, but one that can easily become your D&D, the game that you want to run and play.

So Wizards of the Coast is looking for fan participation. They have already started a small playtest for Friends & Family, which basically amounts to internal employees and friends. The next step is a special playtest at the D&D Experience convention later this month. The final step is the open playtesting that will involve the release of rules and other materials through the website.

  • Will George Lucas' Film "Red Tails" Stay Aloft? January 21, 2012
    by Gene Turnbow

    Will “Red Tails” Fly?

    Red Tails Movie Poster

    Red Tails Movie Poster

Amazingly, George Lucas’ motion picture  Red Tails (20th Century Fox) almost didn’t get made.  It’s an action movie about the first all-African American aerial combat unit that paved the way for the integration of the U.S. armed services.  It was a risky venture by Hollywood standards – so risky that Lucas spent 23 years trying to get funding for the film through the usual Hollywood channels until finally giving up and bankrolling the entire $58 million production cost himself.  The film stars Terrence Howard, Nate Parker, Tristan Wilds, Elijah Kelley, Leslie Odom Jr., David Oyelowo and others.  It’s directed by Anthony Hemingway.

The film opened last Friday and made $6 million its first day at the box office. The film earned an A CinemaScore from moviegoers, and was buoyed by a enthusiastic African-American support that included communities sending busloads of eager viewers to theaters.  It even got a showing at the White House, where President Obama and a group of invitees watched it in 3D.

In an echo of events surrounding the release of Star Wars 35 years ago, critics complain that the film is full of cheese, thoughtless dialog and macho banter and is simply a bad film with no particular merit to speak of – but audiences love it. Apparently telling the story doesn’t have to involve six layers of angst mixed with cinema auteur ambiguity in order to work as a movie.  Who knew?  Rather than belaboring the back story of the Tuskegee Airmen, Lucas takes us straight to the action, and shows how the Red Tails’ experiences really were once they finally got into combat.  The film draws upon Lucas’ fascination with aerial combat, as evinced in all the films in his Star Wars series.

Actor Terrence Howard, who plays Col. A.J. Bullard in the movie, told “Access Hollywood” “half” of the distribution studios rejected the movie, telling filmmakers, “No, we don’t know how to market it.”

“And it’s like ‘Why?’” he asked. “You just market it, it’s an action movie. It’s an all black cast. And the white guys are the bad guys. And it’s like, you market it. It’s just a movie.”

The film is about triumph over adversity, it’s uplifting, and the right people win in the end.  But it’s also got an all black central cast, the black guys are the good guys, the white guys are the bad guys – and it’s a movie about the American military and these traditionally don’t make money overseas.  This isn’t the first time the story of the Tuskegee Airmen has been told in cinema, either, so it’s not new ground – the last treatment of this story was called “The Tuskegee Airmen”, starred Laurence Fishburne, Allen Payne and Malcolm-Jamal Warner, and was released in 1995.

Hollywood wasn’t interested. Conventional wisdom said the film shouldn’t be made, and everyone Lucas talked to about the film repeated the conventional wisdom to him over and over again. George Lucas often relates his troubles getting the original Star Wars movie made in 1977: “When I wanted to do ‘Star Wars,’ no one wanted to help’ …. and even when I finished people watched and they said, ‘It’s not going to work,’ and then it became Star Wars, he said, ‘You know, you’re doing something right when everyone tells you, ‘You can’t do it.’”

The film cost a slim $58 million to make, and about another $42 million to promote and distribute.  Compare this to the Lone Ranger movie being developed by Warner Brothers which somehow has an out-of-control budget that had to be lowered to $215 million., and the live action Akira movie which is currently shut down over budget concerns  – the producer, writer and director on that show have to find a way to bring the movie’s price tag down under $90 million, which doesn’t even include the publicity and distribution costs.  In an industry where you have layers and layers of executives who know absolutely nothing about making movies who are in charge of these decisions on a daily basis, a motion picture being done by somebody who knows how to do them is like a spring zephyr.

Said Lucas in a recent interview with Charlie Rose of CBS News, “They have lost, which is what happens in that corporate environment, any respect for the workers that actually do the work. They don’t realize how hard it is or what they do or the value of the worker. And as a result, they just think that you can go out and, in my case, anybody can direct a movie. Anybody can write a movie. Just put anybody in there. It doesn’t make any difference.”

I’m glad George Lucas is still making films – he is quoted as saying that with Red Tails he’s done everything he’s set out to do in the motion picture industry.  But then, he also said he wasn’t going to make any more Star Wars films, three or four Star Wars films ago.  We think a lot depends on how well Red Tails ultimately does.

  • Movie Review: We Take a Look at Aaron Sims' "Archetype" January 20, 2012

Master of Special Effects Aaron Sims debuts his Sci-Fi Short Film “Archetype”

    By Staff Editor, PK.

    About:

You might not know his name unless you happen to watch and remember with amazing detail the credits of movies like Green Lantern, but Aaron Sims has spent 25 years in Hollywood bringing some of the most amazing creatures and effects to life. Today he debuts his science fiction short film Archetype; featuring the story about a combat robot named RL7, which goes on the run from its military creators after it malfunctions and develops vivid memories of once being human. RL7 battles its way to uncovering the shocking truth behind its past as authorities close in; directed by Aaron Sims, and featuring the acting talents of Robert Joy (Land of the Dead, CSI: NY) and David Anders (Heros, 24).

    Review:

The concept of this isn’t super new, there’s been many sci-fi stories over the years where a human being was put into a cyborg body, running a-muck and becoming a hero in the process of rediscovering his/her humanity. Robocop comes to mind, although I’m hard pressed to turn down a good cyborg movie even if the concept is a little repeated. Archetype is beautifully presented by Aaron Sims and White Rock lake Productions, and complemented very well by the acting of Robert Joy, who many may know from his work on CSI: NY. The action is steady but always interesting, yet there’s something deeply intriguing about this film. Could just be the inner sci-fi/cyborg junkie in me, but I found the story to be more than engrossing enough to stand up and say “Please sir, I want some more“.

If they can bring this cast back, then this is one movie I feel is worthy of the big screen treatment, and is something I would pay to go see.  5 out of 5 Stars.

    From his official Biography:

In the mid-80s, Sims moved to Los Angeles to begin his career as a special effects makeup artist. His work quickly attracted the attention of legendary Academy Award® winner Rick Baker, with whom Sims collaborated for the next twelve years. During that time, Sims served as a leading special effects artist on some of the most popular, defining movies of the 1990s: Gremlins 2Batman ForeverMighty Joe YoungNutty ProfessorHow the Grinch Stole Christmas, and Men in Black.

Sims embraced the new computer technology with enthusiasm in the mid 90’s and began to combine Softimage 3D animation software, Photoshop’s painting capabilities and his knowledge and experience as a sculptor and artist.

In the late 1990s, Sims started working for Academy Award® winner, Stan Winston, who encouraged Sims’ pioneering methods. With advanced computers and cutting-edge software, Sims altered the industry’s process of design and development. In 2000 Sims introduced his design process to Steven Spielberg and became the lead character designer for Artificial Intelligence: A.I. Sims created unprecedented designs for all of Spielberg’s robot characters and, in doing so, validated his groundbreaking approach to character creation.

Having raised the bar in the concept design industry, Sims co-created Stan Winston Digital and led the studio, as art director and head concept artist, on such films as ConstantineFantastic FourSky Captain and the World of TomorrowEight BelowTerminator 3: Rise of the Machines, Spielberg’s War of the Worlds, and Tim Burton’s Big Fish.

Sims’ creative approach to concept design using digital technology has had significant affects on the film industry. Softimage development teams have advanced aspects of their software from Sims creative use of their product. Sims has also inspired many of the current techniques used by top artists and designers in the entertainment industries. The demand for training in his methods has led to an ongoing partnership with Alex Alvarez and the Gnomon School of Visual Effects on a series of instructional DVDs.

With the same adventurous spirit that fueled his willingness to embrace digital technology, Sims founded The Aaron Sims Company to work on 30 Days of NightThe Golden CompassI Am LegendThe Day the Earth Stood StillThe Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian,The Incredible HulkThe Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon EmperorClash of the Titans and Sucker Punch.

  • Video Of the Day!: Richard Garriott’s “Apogee of Fear” January 20, 2012

    By Staff Editor, PK

Instead of our usual Video Of the Day segment, I thought I’d bring you a Science Fiction movie, it’s only 5 minutes long, but it has one incredible distinction from most. It was filmed in outer-space.

Richard Garriott is known for many historical achievements in his life, being a pioneer in the video game industry, he coined the term Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) and helped develop games for that genre. In 2008, he used his fortune to become the first space tourist aboard the International Space Station (ISS). During his trip to the ISS, he took the opportunity to film a science fiction film called Apogee of Fear. Despite the name, the short film is actually a light hearted comedy which features the astronauts of the ISS dealing with the sadness of loosing Richard to his return trip to Earth, then being happy again that he actually had stayed behind, then trying to find a spirit loose on the station.

NASA had previously refused to allow Garriot to release the film to the public for an unknown reason, but according to a recent message from Garriot on his Twitter feed, it appears the space agency may be changing its mind. The above movie, is apparently a bootleg copy that was shot with a handi-cam at a rare public performance of the work. Stay tuned to Krypton Radio, as we’ll update you with any official notices on what NASA decides regarding the very first sci-fi comedy movie, filmed in space.

  • Star Trek Online Now Free to Play January 19, 2012
     by Gene Turnbow
    Cryptic Studio's STAR TREK ONLINE

    Cryptic Studio's STAR TREK ONLINE

If you’ve been following the gaming news here on Krypton Radio, you may remember our article on the trend toward free-to-play MMO’s.  This seems to be the new  business model for online gaming: give enough of the game away for free that people get hooked on the experience and are willing to pay to get more of the same.  The Star Trek Online  MMO opened to mixed reviews almost a full year ago, but they seem to be listening to their customers and fixing some of the more glaring problems with the game – and removing some of the barrier to entry that was keeping many fans away.

Cryptic Studios’ Star Trek Online has adopted a tiered free-to-play (F2P) model where nonpaying “Silver” players will still get to have a robust Star Trek experience, while reserving some of the more advanced game features such as creating guilds and playing multiple characters for the players willing to shell out the monthly $14.99 subscription fee.

For many of the game’s features, simply playing 20 hours in the game will put the free-to-play player on par with those who have bought a subscription. Users who have made an in-store purchase or who have previously purchased a subscription will also gain many of the paid perks without paying a cent. Cryptic also said that it had added new weekly episodes, the name that the game gives to “quests.”

“We couldn’t be more excited,” said Jack Emmert, chief executive of Cryptic Studios, in a statement. “Updating Star Trek Online to the popular free-to-play model removes those barriers of entry that previously kept fans and casual gamers away. Anyone can download and play Star Trek Online at no cost. There’s no better way to see how sitting in the captain’s chair feels.”

Originally launching in March 2010, Star Trek Online included cinematic space combat, a wealth of possible player characters, and a disappointing away-team combat mechanic, according to a PCMag review – but we understand they’ve been addressing these issues as well.

We spoke with one player, Dan Vanderwood, who had been playing STO since beta and whom we had contacted via our growing Facebook fan base:

Krypton Radio: What do you think of how the planet surface scenarios are being handled now. Has their been any improvement?

DV: The away missions to the planet surfaces are still clunky, but easy enough to use.  Combat is still a pain. All in all, I’m thoroughly enjoying it, and prefer surface to space combat. Turning radius on my little engineering ship is horrible. Mind, I’m only a lieutenant 3rd grade right now.

KR: What would you say to the negative comparison of the planet-side part of the game to Second Life? Anything improved about the parts of the game that rely on diplomacy?

DV: The two really aren’t comparable. Second Life has a freedom to it, while STO is just a game. It would be like comparing SL to Halo. There are diplomatic aspects, but everything I’ve run into so far eventually leads to combat (a Vulcan ambassador being an Undine/8472 for instance). Keep in mind, I’m not very far into the game yet, but it’s much more linear than SL.

Personally speaking, I’m intrigued.  I’m going to go try it as soon as I’m done posting this article, if my notebook can muscle it’s way through the massive 3.4Gb download it’ll require.  Enjoy the video, try and game and post your comments on the game.  Is this going to help Star Trek Online rise, or sink?  What do you think?

  • January 18, 2012 - SOPA and PIPA Effectively Dead January 19, 2012

The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA) Have been Stopped… For Now

An Editorial Update, by Staff Editor PK

A message posted by Wikipedia, following the lifting of their website’s blackout.

    Thank you.

The Wikipedia blackout is over — and you have spoken.

More than 162 million people saw our message asking if you could imagine a world without free knowledge. You said no. You shut down Congress’s switchboards. You melted their servers. Your voice was loud and strong. Millions of people have spoken in defense of a free and open Internet.

For us, this is not about money. It’s about knowledge. As a community of authors, editors, photographers, and programmers, we invite everyone to share and build upon our work.

Our mission is to empower and engage people to document the sum of all human knowledge, and to make it available to all humanity, in perpetuity. We care passionately about the rights of authors, because we are authors.

SOPA and PIPA are not dead: they are waiting in the shadows. What’s happened in the last 24 hours, though, is extraordinary. The Internet has enabled creativity, knowledge, and innovation to shine, and as Wikipedia went dark, you’ve directed your energy to protecting it.

We’re turning the lights back on. Help us keep them shining brightly.

January 18th of 2012, truly is a day that will live in Infamy for the history of the internet. It was the day that millions of people from across the United States, and from around the world stood up and told the American government, that they will not tolerate the passing of two bills that had the very real potential to cause harm to the internet, the world’s greatest resource of human knowledge. On January 18th, thousands of websites went dark in protest of the legislation which would give governments and private companies, the ability to shut down websites and tamper with the very inner workings of the internet, in an attempt to stop copyright infringement and electronic piracy of protected content.

We strongly encourage Krypton Radio listeners to continue helping support the full removal of these bills, and let your government representatives know that existing laws with the right adjustments will help to combat the issues of online piracy and copyright infringement. The real truth is, that there is no permanent way to stop these illegal activities; and SOPA and PIPA would simply give private companies and law enforcement agencies the power to gut sections of the internet without warning, in an overtly futile attempt to stop the theft and piracy.

    Senators Notice the Stink

So far, according to Ars Technica, eighteen U.S. Senators have backed away from PIPA, the Senate version of the nuclear-option bill that would give big media the legal right to carve off hunks of the Internet with a chain saw whenever they see something they don’t like on a web site (whether it’s on American soil or not).  The opposition expressed by millions of voices could not be ignored, and neither can the stink from their briefcases.  At one point there was a majority in support of the bill in the Senate, but this is now not the case.  Most of the retractions of support are from the Republican side, which is a surprise – only three of the retractions are Democrats.   The chances of the bill passing now are slim, but letting them up off the mat now would be a mistake.  We as a people need to make sure they don’t try this idea again.

Related to this, in a disturbing 6-3 decision, the United States Supreme Court has ruled that copyrighted works that have passed into the public domain can now be re-copyrighted to conform with the duration of copyright durations observed by other countries in accordance with the an international copyright treaty known as the Berne Convention.  This will only affect certain works, and only for the time it takes for the period of discrepancy between the United States period of copyright and the period described by the Berne Convention to elapse.  Still, it’s a problem for people who make their livings on public domain material who now discover that what they once had free access to is now taken away from them.

  • Steampunk Batman Video Game Cancelled January 15, 2012

A Potentially Wonderful New Interpretation of Batman is Silenced

    By Staff Editor P.K.

    1989 Comic Cover

Do you remember Steampunk Batman? Not everyone may, but back in 1989 Gotham by Gaslight was produced by DC Comics, in what would become known as the first of the Elsewords stories. Batman was taken out of his normal environment and set in the Victorian Era which is normally associated with the alternate history of Steampunk stories, where gears and steam powered inventions rule supreme. In a truly innovative story-line (as far as Batman goes), Bruce Wayne is framed and convicted for the murders associated with Jack the Ripper. Fast forward to modern day, and the one time Steampunk Batman comic is being considered for development as a full fledged video game.

Originally set to be made by Day 1 Studios and Warner Bros, word has come down from the artist who had been hired to develop some artwork to show what the game might look like; that the game has in fact been cancelled before it even got out of the pitch stage. For those of us who love Batman and the world of Steampunk, this is a true disappointment.

Graphic artist Julie A. Farrell, announced via her blog and twitter, that the concept art which she had developed for the game, had been rejected and that as far she knew, the game itself had been flagged as a no-go. She later updated to say that the studio along with Warner Bros. had asked her to take down the art, despite a previous agreement she could use it in her portfolio. Way to be a buzz-kill Warner Bros.

Fortunately, the artwork has survived on the net, and as shown below Ms. Farrell has through her work brought to life an amazing 3D look into the world of Gotham by Gaslight.

We can only hope, or better yet, if you feel strongly enough about wanting to have a Gotham by Gaslight game; contact the studio and demand they take a serious look at developing this into a full game.

  • Nathan Fillion Wins People's Choice Award for 2012 January 13, 2012
    by Gene Turnbow

Fans voted by the thousands for the 2012 People’s Choice awards and were not disappointed last Wednesday when Nathan Fillion won an award for “Favorite TV Drama Actor” for his starring role as Richard Castle on the ABC series Castle,  along with the cast and crew of the show for winning in the category of “Favorite TV Crime Drama”.  In addition to a long list of other achievements in film and televsion, Nathan Fillion is known in science fiction fandom circles for his portrayal of the self-centered Captain Hammer in Joss Whedon’s Doctor Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog, but is best known as Captain Malcom Reynolds in the short-lived but wildly popular science fiction TV series Firefly and the 2005 motion picture it spawned entitled Serenity.

Nathan Fillion doesn’t just play a hero on TV (we note a recurring theme of captaincy) he takes the idea into the real world and does what he can to make the world a better place.  He co-founded the non-profit organization Kids Need to Read with author PJ Haarsma in 2007. Kids Need to Read works to create a culture of reading for children by providing inspiring books to underfunded schools, libraries, and literacy programs across the United States, especially those serving disadvantaged children.

The fans of the series Firefly  call themselves “Browncoats”, and are some of the most tight-knit fandom groups out there. Many are surprised to learn that the original show only lasted 11 episodes before Fox Television cancelled it.

Nathan Fillion’s association with the Kids Need to Read charity is not just window dressing or cheap publicity. The various fan projects and groups associated with the charity  raised a total of $36,504 for KNTR in 2011, and that amount does not include contributions from individuals. This year, they  impacted 23,463 children, almost quadruple the amount of children served in 2010! Browncoat and Fillion fan funds played a large role in that growth.

One important affiliate is Whedonopolis.com, a subsidiary of Fandom Charities, Inc. a 501c non-profit organization based in Los Angeles.  Whedonopolism under the direction of Marsia Powers, organizes annual Doctor Horrible screenings in cooperation with Joss Whedon and the cluster of creative professionals who have worked with him over the years, including Nathan Fillion – who seems to have a fondness for making surprise in-person appearances at the annual events.  The screenings typically draw hundreds of people, some of whom commute great distances to be there.

  • Video Of the Day! Jan 12, 2012 - Equicon 1974 Star Trek Convention January 12, 2012

Our Video Of the Day! Is sponsored in part by Nostalgia; Nostalgia, helping people remember the good ol’ days for over 50 years!

And today we warp around the sun to head back to 1974, where we get to take a look at a film reel from the Equicon Sci-Fi convention (remember the days of actual film?) featuring the cast, writers and production crew of the original Star Trek, and with some other well known people who you may just recognize!

For the younger Trekkies out there, Equicon was the original Star Trek convention, which was founded by legendary Trek Fan Bjo Trimble. Mrs. Trimble and her husband John, are the main reason why the original Star Trek was able to stay afloat for its third year on television. She also lead the charge to have America’s first Space Shuttle named “Enterprise”, in honor of the famous fictional ship.  John and Bjo are still active in science fiction fandom today.

Also at the convention was a replica of the bridge of the Starship Enterprise, back for a second appearance from its 1973 debut at the first Equicon  made primarily from cardboard but lit and painted so well that it looked like the real thing.  It was built by a very young Doug Drexler, who eventually became a designer and illustrator, famed for his work on later incarnations of Star Trek.  Unfortunately the fire marshall did not approve of the construction and wiring, and sprayed the back of the bridge set with a fire retardent foam which, according to Drexler at the time, had shorted out much of the practical lighting he had built into the consoles.

    A Call to Action

If anyone has photos of this remarkable bridge set, please scan them and email copies to kryptonradio@kryptonradio.com.  We’ll post them here!

  • Video Of the Day! Jan 10, 2012 - The Piano Guys - Coldplay - Paradise (Peponi) African Style (Piano/Cello) Cover January 10, 2012

And it’s time once again for our Video Of the Day!; We’ve been hitting you up with some of the best in sci-fi, steampunk, and just plain rocking nerd music. So while looking at what we could offer you today, we thought you might enjoy something a little different for a change. One of our favorite groups is The Piano Guys, a group of incredible musicians who specialize in Piano and Cello music, and who we were introduced to with their Star Wars Parody hit Cello Wars. This time we bring you one of their newest works, “Coldplay – Paradise (Peponi) African Style (Piano/Cello) Cover – The Piano Guys ft. Alex Boye.”

From The Piano Guys – The story behind the song:

“Each time we write/arrange a tune we take a journey. We have to admit—this journey took us a lot further than we expected. Retracing our steps reveals several factors that made this a reality. As we started arranging it we had serious writer’s block. Perhaps some of the worst we’ve ever had. In fact, one day instead of writing we went around the entire studio with a can of WD-40 and coated every piece of metal to ensure that we were a squeak-free studio. Then on a whim we decided to back away and take an entirely new approach to the song—an African approach. It may seem random in retrospect, but at the time it was an exciting way to restart the arrangement. It was working, but our journey still was on foot until we called in Alex Boye, one of the most talented people we’ve ever met. Alex has this contagious energy that gave new life to the song and to us. He sings the tune in 4 different languages: Swahili, English, Yoruba (his mother’s native language), and Alex’s own African “scat” (we’ll call it…Scafrican) =) Most of the words you hear are translated from the lyrics in the original Coldplay Tune. We’re huge fans of Alex — We bet you are now too!”

“When we had finished the arrangement we all agreed that listening to it was like taking a journey to somewhere remote and ruggedly beautiful. How were we to depict this with a cello, African percussion and, most difficult of all, a grand piano? We took a risky, but oh-so-valuable turn when we called in helicopters to air-lift us and our instruments where none had gone before! (Please excuse the Trek reference). Since no one had ever done this before where were we to go for advice? Well, we can tell you that Home Depot didn’t have a lot of answers (how disappointing) but we did clean them out of their strongest cable they had. We don’t mind telling you that when that helicopter began lifting our brand new-never-before-played grand piano into the air we couldn’t help close our eyes and cross our fingers. We consider a blessing of Heaven that it worked. I guess we figured that if it didn’t, maybe it could still be a viral video — “PIANO MOVE FAIL” =)”

“We’d like to thank from the bottom of our hearts, Duane Fielding who offered the helicopters and SkyHawk for not dropping the piano…:-) Half-way through the first day of shooting we discovered that, as typical guys, we had forgotten to bring ANY food or water to this remote location. We had two options: one, wrestle a mountain rodent and harvest cacti or two, starve. Duane, our head pilot, took pity on us. He took off (literally) and moments later landed in a Wendy’s parking lot, ordered 5 of everything (sadly, he couldn’t use the drive through)…took off again and brought us chicken sandwiches and hamburgers via airmail. Thank you Duane! Flying in your helicopter was a dream come true for us despite the lack of doors. =)”

    Filming location:
    http://g.co/maps/mker7

All the instruments you hear are REAL instruments. We wanted to be authentic about this. The following percussion instruments were used:

    Djembe (drum)
Agogo bell (like a cow bell)
    Udu (the porcelain vase-looking drum)
    Guiro (gourd scraper)
    Djabarra (shaker)
    Rain stick
Pangi seed shaker (“goat toenails” or Unas)

    Credits:
Paradise (Mylo Xyloto) by Coldplay written by Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland, Will Champion, And Chris Martin; Copyright Universal Music Mgb Songs And Upala Music, Inc.
Arrangement written and produced by Al van der Beek & Steven Sharp Nelson
    Lead vocals: Alex Boye
    Cello: Steven Sharp Nelson
    Piano: Jon Schmidt
Percussion and backup vocals: Al van der Beek & Steven Sharp Nelson
Recorded, mixed, mastered at TPG Studios by Al van der Beek
Video filmed, edited, & produced by Paul Anderson & Tel Stewart

  • Star Wars: Episode QUICK January 9, 2012

Are you brave enough to challenge the dark side of the Force and bite into the DARK VADOR Burger?

Thank for choosing Krypton Radio Newswire, pull around to the first paragraph please.

As we previously reported on Krypton Radio, the French fast food chain Quick, had been somewhat secretive about a major upcoming promotional campaign regarding Star Wars themed food. Secretive despite the story being leaked and going viral on the net fairly quickly, especially amongst Star Wars fan sites and other media outlets covering sci-fi related news.  Quick is  a European fast-food restaurant group, (similar to McDonald’s) and primarily operates in France, Belgium and Luxembourg; but also has locations in Russia, New Caledonia, Réunion and Martinique.

Unveiled today, the official announcement was made by Quick, that they are launching their L’Episode Quick. Which is set to celebrate the French release of Star Wars: Episode 1 in 3D,  much like any mega marketing campaign here in the U.S, special food packaging and themed toys will accompany the film’s release. However, leave it to the French to knock that up a notch and take the themed element all the way to the food itself! We’re not not just talking a burger with a few extra toppings, slathered with a new sauce and then slapped with a corny name. Well, ok, maybe we are a little, but Quick has taken their burgers and trained them in the ways of the force.

To celebrate the cinema release on 8 February 2012 of episode 1 of the STAR WARS series in 3D, the universe of this cult saga will take over the Quick restaurants from 31 January to 5 March. A range of exclusive products has been developed just for this special STAR WARS operation. It consists of three burgers, savoury snacks and an ice cream flavour. Collections of miniature toys and accessories in the shapes of STAR WARS characters have also been designed for the two set meals on offer for children: the Magic Box for children from four to eight years old, and the Menu Top for nine to twelve-year-olds.

JEDI Burger: the Force of mustard

“Allow yourself to be invaded by the force of spicy mustard, the grilled flavor of minced beef patties and the softness of bread and Mozzarella cheese.”

    Bread dusted with flour
    Minced beef patties
    Mustard sauce
    Mozzarella cubes
    Melted cheese
Suggested prices: €4.70 for the burger alone / €7.20 for meal.
Approx: $5.98 for the burger alone / $9.16 for the meal.

DARK Burger: the Power of Pepper

“Confront the power of a bun sprinkled with pepper and poppy seeds that inflame the pepper sauce and the melted pepper cheese, and intensify the grilled flavor of the minced beef patties.

Red-coloured bread sprinkled with pepper and poppy seeds (natural colouring agent: paprika and beet root powder)
    Minced beef patties
    Pepper sauce
    Endives
1 slice of melted pepper Cheddar
Suggested prices: €4.70 the burger alone / €7.20 for the meal.

Approx: $5.98 for the burger alone / $9.16 for the meal.

    DARK VADOR BURGER

The dark side of the Force reveals itself in this very spicy burger where pepper expresses the raw power of its taste in the bread, the sauce, the melted cheese and the rings of red pepper.

Black coloured bread sprinkled with black pepper and poppy seeds
    Pepper sauce
    Minced beef patties
    One slice of melted Cheddar
    with ground black pepper
    Red pepper
Suggested prices: €4.90 for the burger alone / €7.40 for a meal
Approx $6.24 for the burger / $9.42 for the meal.

The Quick restaurant chain is perhaps one of the few, if not only fast food groups to go all out on a marketing blitz to this extent. Advertising it as a world-wide first, with a 100% STAR WARS operation including designing food products (burgers, snacks and ice cream), miniature toys and accessories for children. The roll-out is planned in two phases, the first starting January 31st, with dueling burgers symbolizing two of Star Wars’ most iconic characters from Episode 1, Yoda and Darth Maul. Then March 2nd to March 5th, Lord Vader himself lets customers feel the Dark side of the gastrointestinal force, with The DARK VADOR burger. And after looking over the menu choices, we’re kinda wanting to book a flight to Paris around oh say the, 31st!

Quick hasn’t forgotten the kids with a selection of toys for their Magic Box kids meals:

  • Richard Alf, Co-Founder of ComicCon, Dead at 59 January 8, 2012
Richard Alf, Co-Founder of ComicCon, RIP

Richard Alf, Co-Founder of ComicCon, RIP

Richard Alf, one of the co-founders of San Diego’s Comic-Con, died last Wednesday of pancreatic cancer at age 59. Alf joined up with a band of volunteers in 1970 to start what is now the convention that defines the comic book industry.  He fronted friend and fellow Comic-Con co-founder Mike Towry a few thousand dollars to pay for the convention for the first three years and played a pivotal role in the success and growth of annual convention.

The three-day annual gathering has become a phenomenon, drawing a heavy Hollywood presence in recent years as the movie business has put an increasing emphasis on comic book heroes; and is the venue of choice for building buzz around new creative projects targeted at the comic book and science fiction communities.  In the 70′s and 80′s it was largely a fan-run celebration, but has become a trade show in most important details.  Alf, however, had long since left the volunteer position before Comic-Con became a signature events for geeks across the globe.

The first Comic-Con was relatively modest in scale compared to the convention that now draws more than 125,000 people to San Diego every summer.  Alf was diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer in December. He is survived by his mother.

  • Star Wars Themed Burgers Coming to France January 6, 2012

Come To The Dark Side of The Bun, Young Jedi…

Krypton Radio Drive Thru er Newswire

    Darth Burger

    Sith Burger

It’s not every day you wonder what kind of burger a Jedi would eat, and to be honest, they probably would want fries with that. Coming in February to the Quick Fast Food Restaurant chain in France, Star Wars themed burgers! The unusual promotional event, is to coincide with the French release of Star Wars Episode 1 in 3D. The Quick Company is keeping this as hush-hush as possible for now, despite the story going viral on the net so quickly. When contacted for comment, an official for Quick stated, that an official notification regarding the Star Wars Burgers would be made available soon.

Assuming Google translator works correctly, this quote was obtained from a site regarding the promotional pictures shown above.

    Not so great English Translation:

As you know? the first quarter of 2012 will mark the year of Star Wars Episode I 3D cinema.
And like Star Wars for each output, the advertising campaign will start small. And it’s the fast food chain Quick opening the ball with the month of February the sale of Star Wars Burger.
Indeed, three different sandwiches will be offered for one month: the Dark Burger (Red), the Jedi Burger (green), and Darth Vader Burger (black).

This is an overview of the advertising campaign that will be proposed during this limited offer

Stay Tuned, as Krypton Radio will update you as soon as Quick releases the official notification!

  • Live Action "Akira" Production Shut Down Over Budget Concerns January 6, 2012

    Akira

    Krypton Radio Newswire

The live action remake of Katsuhiro Otomo‘s anime masterpiece Akira seems to be cursed.  It’s hit one problem after another, and this time its $90 million budget is the problem. The Hollywood Reporter  tells us that Warner Brothers has halted work on Akira to give the film’s producers a chance to sit down with director Jaume Collet-Serra to figure out how to bring the budget down.  The problem is bad enough that screenwriter Steve Kloves, who did the most recent rewrite, may be brought in as well, meaning significant scenes will have to be omitted. When Akira was shut down it had an estimated budget of $90 million.  The  plan is to try and bring it down to somewhere between $60 and $70 million.  If the filmmakers can’t figure out how to bring the cost down, the film will be scrapped.

The economic crunch appears to be finally hitting Hollywood hard.  Ticket sales are the lowest they’ve been since 1995.  Disney recently had an involuntary gag reaction when they saw what their new Lone Ranger movie was going to cost, though Jerry Bruckheimer’s vision for this venerable character’s resurrection was lowered from $260 million $215 million, still several times the budget of the Akira reboot, an inconceivable amount of money for a western. Both Paradise Lost and Arthur and Lancelot slammed on the brakes, and both of these were Warner Brothers projects too.  Is Warner Brothers on the ropes, balking at production costs a fraction of what other studios are spending on their shows?  Or are they the only major studio with enough foresight and vision to see the writing on the wall with respect to runaway production costs?

Perhaps the bigger question is why Warner Brothers thinks there’s a need to redo a film that was already perfect, and that almost singlehandedly defined the anime genre when it was released in 1988.

Write your comments – tell us what you think.

  • Krypton Radio Looking for On-Air Talent! January 6, 2012

Krypton RadioDo you have what it takes to be our On Air Fan Talent?

Krypton Media Group™ aka Krypton Universe™ / Krypton Radio™, is looking for original Fan Talent to host a morning show on Krypton Radio! We’re looking for individuals, or even a small group that is willing and able to produce its’ own show to be aired on Krypton Radio, with a minimum of three new episodes per calender week.

What is Fan Talent? Fan talent is like what you see on YouTube, people or groups using their talents to produce low-budget, yet high quality shows or series, in lieu of the millions of dollars some big budget studios pay to produce something of the same quality. We admit it, we’re not a huge station with 10 Million listeners, but we’re rising fast and looking for someone to jump on at the ground floor with us and ride to the top.

    How We Can Help You

Let’s face it, everybody and his pet rock has a podcast these days.  Google is full to overflowing with them.  Therein lies the problem, though – how to you get heard in this tidal wave of downloadable content?  When everybody has a podcast and a blog, how do you get noticed? Getting your show heard depends on having a high traffic web site to start with, developing a strong fan base and online community and having contacts with whom you can cross-promote it all.  Krypton Radio has all this and wants to share it with you in exchange for being able to air your creative content on our radio station. We have literally thousands of listeners a month, in 109 countries all around the world.  You can take the next three years and develop your presence on the web from scratch, or you can join ours and skip the hard part.

If you have an idea for a show that you want to do, we can help you by putting it on air for free (radio stations typically have hourly operating costs and normally charge for air time)  and giving you assistance and guidance getting your show produced in a slick, polished manner.  Producers for Krypton Radio will get the benefit of exposure to thousands of listeners each month, and the growing Krypton Radio fan base.  We’ll work with you on cross promotions between your web site and ours, and we’ll coordinate with you on your ad campaigns so that you get maximum yield from your own advertising and promotion.  We want to help you succeed.

    Requirements for On-Air Production:

    • You must have a clear and understandable voice.
    • You must be able to produce/edit own show from home, with minor oversight from Krypton Radio (we reserve the right to review each episode before airing).
    • Your content must be kept PG-13 or better at all times. Kids and their parents both listen to this station.  No vulgar or explicit language or content. If you must use an expletive it must be bleeped or blurred out.  (And obviously, we don’t do either politics or hate speech, but we hope that goes without saying.)
    • You must be able to tape at least 3 shows per week on a consistent basis.
    • Your show must be a half  hour to an hour in length, or time can be varied for purposes of including advertisements (do not insert your own advertising).
    • Experience with the fandom in any of the following themes is strongly preferred:
    • Superhero / Comics
    • Science Fiction
    • Steampunk
    • Fantasy
    • Gaming
    • Must have experience with Social Media (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, etc.)

If you’re interested in joining the Krypton Radio  team and share our passion for the scifi/fantasy geekosphere and the awesome music that comes with it, e-mail  thepitch@kryptonradio.com, include your full legal name, performance name (stage name, if any), and a working phone number. Tell us about yourself, your experiences, what you love about the genres we cover, and what you bring to the table. Please also include your ideas of what you would like to do with the morning show, and anything other information you feel is relevant.

    Important Notes

    • Yes, we can accept podcasts, so long as the podcast can be repackaged as a prerecorded show for broadcast on Krypton Radio.  You must mention that your show is broadcast on Krypton Radio at the beginning and end of each episod. You are getting air time free of charge, this is all we ask for recompense at this time.
    • We love the idea of syndication – airing existing podcasts as broadcast shows.  It shows that you have your production process down and can deliver on a regular basis, because you’ve already been doing it.  We may ask to receive a copy of a finished pilot episode if you’re new to this sort of thing so that we can help you assess where your weak spots in production values are and help you make your show the best it can be.
    • If you’re doing a news show or have news topics in it, the material must be delivered in a timely manner.
    • We are fully BMI / ASCAP licensed.  Which means if you want to include a clip of some song or music in the body of your show, it’s legal.
    • You agree that other than this, that you have acquired all necessary licenses, ownership and clearances for the material you present and agree to indemnify Krypton Radio from any legal ramifications that may result from your use of it in the body of your show. This means that you can have a show that talks about somebody else’s intellectual property or material, but you cannot, for example, make a fanfic show using characters from your favorite TV show, book or movie  as characters in your own production.  Unless you’ve got a contract that gives you the right to do that.

    Don’t Be Shy About This

Lacking one or two bullet points may not stop you from getting your show on the air.  We’ll help you figure stuff out, or figure ways around production problems.  Remember that we’re fan geeks just like you.  Let’s get you on the air!

  • Firefly MMO Still Aims to Misbehave January 5, 2012

Buffy and Firefly MMO’s May Yet Go Online, But Hurdles Remain

    by Gene Turnbow
    Crew of the "Serenity"

    Crew of the "Serenity"

You may have been reading in other news sources that Multiverse, the development platform that was going to be used for the possible creation of MMO’s based on Joss Whedon properties Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly, had to close its doors on December 7 of 2011. The source code lives on, however, – and has been snatched up by the newly formed Multiverse Foundation. Fortunately for the huge fan base of Joss Whedon’s scifi western, the idea of a Firefly MMO is too big to die.

Tristan Bacon, head of communications for Multiverse Foundation, says that the company has acquired the source code and is “starting work full-time on the actual MMO creation platform.” Bacon says that if there is still interest from fans, the team intends to use the platform to make a Firefly MMO.

And that’s where things get complicated.

When we went to the MultiverseMMO web site, we found a home page full of Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet.. , which is a web designer’s way of saying “we don’t know what’s going to go in this space yet.”  This doesn’t bode well.  The parts of the site that do work indicate that all the work done since 2004 on the Multiverse MMO platform is now going to be open source for anybody to use.  A statement on the web site describes the situation:

Right now, it takes at least three years and as much as $20 million to make a Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMOG), due to challenges in the areas of engineering, asset-creation, and marketing. That price tag means independent game developers simply can’t afford to enter this exciting and lucrative space.

Multiverse blows away these barriers to entry.

The Multiverse Foundation is the only company focused on delivering a complete Open Source end-to-end solution for MMOG and virtual world development. To solve the challenges mentioned above, The Multiverse Foundation gives developers ample code and content to get you started.

The development of a Firefly MMO depends a lot on Multiverse getting not only the technical help it needs to finish the platform, but on obtaining the all important intellectual property rights as well, which at this writing they have not yet secured. Since Bacon has made a public request for programmers interested in working on such a project, implying that money is tight, we have to wonder how they’ll ever manage the licensing rights to the Firefly property. They’ll have to go a long way to prove that they can not only finish developing the platform itself, but the creative content as well, then successfully set up and maintain the horrific pile of technology it takes to support any kind of MMO, let alone actually market it and make enough of a profit to make it worth licensing.  There is a reason it costs $20 million to get an MMO online, and the very nature of massively multiplayer online technology is one of the hugest barriers to entry.

The challenges ahead for a Firefly MMO are not insurmountable, but loom large – but Fox was surprised in 2004 when there was enough interest in the property to get a movie made (Serenity, 2005).  Still even there, while adored by fans, it wasn’t until it was released on DVD that the film even made back its production costs.

With much of the work done and operating well enough to demo, there may still be hope for a Firefly or Buffy the Vampire Slayer MMO in the future – if they can develop the content and get it released while these properties still have enough juice left in them to allow them to make enough money to be worth doing, never mind making a profit.
