Science fiction visionaries join forces to bring us the future of the past

Bucking the major Hollywood studios, famed television and movie magic makers Marc Scott Zicree, Doug Drexler, and Neil Johnson have united to bring us a new science fiction series called Space Command. It’s not unusual for big names such as these to join up for a tour-de-force of a movie or series, but what has been deemed a unique move is the trio deciding to gather funding for their ambitious project from the every day citizenry through donations.

The project is still under wraps to some degree, as the major details along with a demo video of the movie will be released May 16th. The group seeks to bring us a 1950′s retro styled science fiction action series, without the fear and issues associated with big budget studios trying to control the movie making process. The independent production will get funding via the Kickstarter.com program, and even give the major contributors screen credits and possibly even a guest spot on camera.

Many Star Trek fans know the name Doug Drexler, from his makeup effects work on Star Trek: The Next Generation, all the way to his visual effects work and designing of the Enterprise NX-01. His heart belongs to the future, and his passion has brought us some of the most memorable moments in recent sci-fi history to life, including his breathtaking work on Battlestar Galactica.

Steven Neil a special effects artist, and good friend of Doug Drexler gives a shout out on the project and in his clipper-build video we see that he’s in the process of building a model of one of the famous retro ships to be used in the series.

In a press release, the group stated:

ATTENTION SCI-FI FANS: Sci-Fi Legends set to launch fundraising campaign on Kickstarter.com for new Feature Film Franchise. SPACE COMMAND will be a series of new and original feature films by STAR TREK writer Marc Zicree, GALACTICA FX whiz Doug Drexler, director Neil Johnson and other Sci-Fi luminaries. Inspired by classic science fiction TV & Film of the 1950s, this dream team is set to bring to life “Bold Adventures in the Far Reaches of Space.” Beginning May 16th, the filmmakers will bypass the Studios and Networks, going straight to the fans for funding to greenlight their project. Since Kickstarter’s launch in April 2009, more than 20,000 creative projects have been successfully funded by more than 1.8 Million individual contributors. Fans who contribute to SPACE COMMAND’s Kickstarter campaign are eligible to receive exclusive rewards in exchange for individual pledges ranging from $5 to $10,000. Contributions of $5000 or greater include rewards of Associate Producer Credit and even an Appearance in the Film.

  • Video of the Day - STATIC SHOCK: BLACKOUT April 24, 2012
    Krypton Radio Newswire

    Stefan Denzil as "Static"

It’s hard to ignore the lure of making your own superhero movie if you have the talent, the time, the resources and the team of friends who can help you make it happen.  Stefan Dezil, a drama major at Carnegie Mellon University, is in the sweet spot.  With some funding provided by friends and family, he’s made a web short based on the Milestone Comics character Static Shock.  Dezil jokingly explains “I really wanted to see a superhero who looked like me, and since I didn’t have enough time to buff up to do Black Panther, I thought Static was a good choice.”

Shot for just $5,000 on the RED camera system, Static Shock: Blackout is a truly impressive Static Shock fan film created by Stefan Dezil. The short was created to be released just before the late Static co-creator Dwayne McDuffie’s 50th birthday and follows a version of Daisy Watkins, the comic book love interest of Static Shock, as she seeks to discover the teenage superhero who fights crime in the dangerous Dakota City.

The costume is raw and unfinished.  Dezil’s character is more serious and a bit less effusive than Phil LaMarr’s portrayal of him in the Static Shock cartoons done by Warner Brothers. And yet, the acting is solid, the basic production values are very good – and while the effects are understandably limited, they work within the story and move things forward nicely.  The end result is very watchable and very pleasing.  Diehard fans will quibble with the creative choices, but we think Dezil has made some good choices with the treatment of the material.

A year and a half in the making, the web short has gone viral since hitting the web, racking up nearly 26,000 views and has been featured on the Topless Robot channel on YouTube.  Fans of “Static Shock” are now campaigning for a movie adaptation.  It was more than just Stefan Dezil working on it, of course – he had a whole team of students from Carnegie Mellon University, The Art Institute, Syracuse University and University of Central Florida.  The best news is that episode 2 is already in preproduction.

    Enjoy.

  • Spinrad's Lost Trek Script Won't Be Produced After All April 2, 2012

    by Gene Turnbow

    Producer / Actor James Cawley

    Producer / Actor James Cawley

Star Trek fans all over the world have at least seen some episodes of the fan-made web-only production: “Star Trek: Phase II.”

It started out as “Star Trek: New Voyages,” and executive producer and star James Cawley spent tens of thousands of dollars of his own money to continue the original “Star Trek,” bringing in some big names (including David Gerrold, D.C. Fontana, Eugene W. Roddenberry and George Takei) along the way.

Sooner or later it was going to rise to the level where CBS Television was going to have to say something about it, and we’ve reached that point. These fans are actively using characters, story lines and other intellectual property owned by CBS to produce their own work, but the series and others like it are so loved that shutting it down would yield a massive backlash. It hasn’t stopped them from telling Cawley and company that they can’t produce Spinrad’s recently rediscovered script “He Walked Among Us” after all.

This was an unpopular move with the fans, and the New York Times covered the dispute.

“These executives should be phasered on heavy stun,” one fan told the newspaper. That was just the tip of the iceberg to the “sleeping dragon” of Star Trek fans that writer David Gerrold. Gerrold, who wrote the popular “Star Trek” episode “The Trouble With Tribbles,” said he was confused that CBS Television let “Phase II” film his unproduced “Star Trek: The Next Generation” script “Blood and Fire,” so why not Spinrad’s script as well?

Unfortunately, Spinrad’s script does not belong to Spinrad anymore. It belongs to CBS Television. It acquired the rights to it from Desilu Productions, which paid Spinrad $5,000 for the script it never even used. Keep in mind that this is in 1967 dollars, so that five grand is worth about $34K now. That is not an insignificant amount of money, and CBS had and still has the rights to do with that script whatever they want to, having paid in full for it.

Also unfortunately, Spinrad (who was to have directed) and Cawley (who would have produced) are pretty light on options here. Of course, if Spinrad were to write another script that CBS didn’t own, CBS would have much less to say about it and would probably have to let it be produced.

While it’s true that everyone generally recognizes Star Trek as being the intellectual property of CBS Television, they did broadcast the entire first season of Star Trek on prime time television without a copyright statement of any sort. They added one later, but the first season was already out there by then. In those days there were no VCR’s so it probably didn’t occur to them, but from a legal standpoint, a certain amount of damage was done. Add to this the fact that they’ve had to let up on the strict prosecution and persecution of fan made material available on the web, and you’ve get a somewhat nebulous situation for CBS, and it might be sufficiently gaseous a proposition that they’d let Spinrad and Cawley go with an original screenplay even if it used familiar characters and settings.

  • An American TARDIS At Gallifrey One March 20, 2012

    by Gene Turnbow

Paul Salamoff poses with his fully restored TARDIS console.

Paul Salamoff poses with his TARDIS console, restoration in progress.

In February at the 23rd annual Gallifrey One convention held in Los Angeles, there was a significant TARDIS sighting.  In this case it was the TARDIS console from the only American-made TARDIS, used in the 1996 made-for-TV movie starring Paul McGann. We spoke with its owner and the men who restored it to be better than new at its exhibit hall at the convention.

The film was the first attempt to revive Doctor Who, following its suspension in 1989. It was intended as a back-door pilot for a new American-produced Doctor Who TV series, and introduced Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor in his only televised appearance as the character. Although a ratings success in the United Kingdom, the film did not fare well on American television, and no new series was purchased. The series was later relaunched on the BBC in 2005.

The TARDIS console is owned by Paul Salamoff, a Doctor Who fan and veteran of the film industry who has worked variously as a writer, producer and film executive after getting his start as a practical FX and makeup artist.

Salamoff obtained the TARDIS console in 2006 after being put in contact with the owner of the Vancouver prop company that had originally built it for the movie. At the time the owner was keen to get rid of it – it seems it was useless as a rental, since it didn’t resemble anything other than what it was – a TARDIS console. He simply gave it to Salamoff – he didn’t even ask Salamoff to bring his own truck.  He just dropped it off at Salamoff’s shop in Burbank.

Although the console was in pretty decent shape with all the lights working, the Time-Rotor was gone and some of the switches were missing including the large hand crank. All the feet on the base were broken at the ankles and had been quickly hot glued back together.  Salamoff remarked that the controls were about 85% there, but interestingly, all the lights still worked.

When Salamoff and his friends Brian Uiga and Bob Mitsch learned that the cast and crew of the 1996 movie would be coming to the 23rd annual Gallifrey One convention held in Los Angeles, they decided to attempt a full restoration of the console. Since obtaining the console, Salamoff had already recreated the all important Time-Rotor..  The trio got busy not only replacing all the broken switches and repairing all the broken parts, they also rigged the time rotor with lights, and replaced all the original lights with modern LED (“light emitting diode”) lights that consumed far less power and generated far less heat.  The original lighting used tungsten-halogen lamps, and could only be left on for about five minutes at a time before the console began to smoke.  They replaced the hand crank as well, restored the three clocks and rigged the rest of the controls so that they could do what they did in the movie.

They didn’t stop there.  They added some control logic to make the lights flash and sequence appropriately, and added digital playback units and amplifiers so that the console makes the familiar sounds of the TARDIS in transdimenional flight.

During our interview, Paul Salamoff offered the fact that Brian had just finished refinishing his kitchen with bamboo flooring, and the TARDIS console needed a base so that they could more easily move it around and display it – and it just happened to match the original flooring in the movie set fairly closely – so they made a pedestal from the bamboo flooring.  There remained the problem of how to hide a lot of the machinery and electronics that make the rest of the console operate, so they decorated the equipment box to look like a toolbox full of the Doctor’s equipment.  Brian machined a number of parts and recreated props from the movie to put in the top of the box, as well as the sonic screwdriver that is usually displayed on the console’s counter.

The Console was brought to the convention and given a room of its own where conventioneers could have their photo taken with the console and share the experience.  Said Salamoff, “I’ve been a fan of Doctor Who since I was five years old. I used to watch it on WGBH in Boston.  I grew up watching Tom Baker, and then John Pertwee, and I’ve been a fan my whole life.  I want the fans to know that this is in the hands of somebody who loves the show.  To me it’s like owning the Captain’s chair from the Enterprise.  We spent three months restoring this when we found out that all the cast of the 1996 movie were going to be here.”

Brian Uiga works with a collection of TV and movie cars called Star Car Central, and owns a fully rebuilt and restored  “Herbie the Love Bug”, built from bits and pieces of the original movie cars from the Disney movies.  He had made an animatronic car so that children with long term illnesses in hospitals can meet Herbie and interact with him; he used his experience building Herbie to fix the broken controls and add missing features to the console.  He had seen it in the Doctor Who movie when he was fourteen years old and was thrilled to be able to work on its restoration.  Brian said that it was important to him to recreate the memory of what the film was like, and not the relatively nonfunctional prop that it actually was.

“When people come to see this,” said Uiga, “you can see their excited inner twelve year old taking over.  That’s the reason we did this.  Because we feel just the same way.”

    A full six-part report on the complete restoration can be found at Bob Mitsch’s blog. 1 2 3 4 5 6

  • Ralph McQuarrie: 1929– 2012 March 4, 2012
    by Samantha Lowell

    Ralph McQuarrie, 1929 - 2012

The best known production artist in cinematic history and one of the founding fathers of a galaxy far, far away has died. Ralph McQuarrie’s website announced this week that the artist responsible for the look of the Star Wars universe and many other films, passed away at the age of 82.

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of such a visionary artist and such a humble man,” George Lucas said in a statement.”Ralph McQuarrie was the first person I hired to help me envision Star Wars. His genial contribution, in the form of unequaled production paintings, propelled and inspired all of the cast and crew of the original ‘Star Wars’ trilogy.”

The modest, unassuming McQuarrie summarized his career in two eras: Before Star Wars and After Star wars. Before Star Wars, he’d spent thirty years as an unknown technical illustrator for Boeing and CBS, where he created animation for the Apollo moon landings, before a young George Lucas approached him to help design an unlikely project which several studios had already rejected.

Working with the dictum that the new universe was to look lived-in and realistic, McQuarrie used his skills in aviation design to create the look of the Star Wars universe and crafted such now-iconic images asDarth Vader. His designs for the film’s climactic battle were inspired by the battles in the Pacific during the Second World War. His work quickly set the standard for decades of genre and science fiction films to come.

With the runaway success of Star Wars: A New Hope, McQuarrie suddenly found himself, at age 49, a household word and the most sought after production Illustrator ever to work in films. He went on to design “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back” and a who’s who of film classics, including “Raiders of the Lost Ark,”"E.T.: The Extra-terrestrial,” “Back to the Future,”"Cocoon,” “Total Recall,” and the original TV series”Battlestar Galactica,”

McQuarrie preferred to think of himself as merely a member of a successful team, crediting Star Wars production designer John Barry and George Lucas for the success of his breakout project, taking a more philosophical view of his own success. In an interview released shortly after the first Star Wars film was released, McQuarrie stated with quiet satisfaction, “Thirty years of work are finally paying off. “

  • Krypton Radio Reviews: Dr. Seuss' The Lorax 3-D March 2, 2012

Giggling-Jiggling Bears, Dancing Fish, and Danny DeVito. It’s a Dr. Seuss Movie Alright

By Staff Editor & Film Critic, PK.

If you’ve been following us on Facebook, then you undoubtedly have seen some of my posts. Pondering the question, are modern day 3-D movies worth all the hype I keep hearing about? Well, after taking perhaps a little too much cold-flu medicine and feeling my eyeballs vibrating out of my skull, I decided the logical course of action was to go see a movie. After bouncing out of my car at the theater, I stopped and read the signs carefully. Of all the movies I could see today, which one would appeal the most to a cynical, sarcastic, and slightly high, yet cranky radio editor. Ghost Rider : Spirit of Vengeance 3-D was available, but I thought, “nah”. I’m in pain already, that’s overkill even for someone who enjoys the occasional slap and tickle of a bad movie.

I admittedly have yet to see the new Ghost Rider movie, but it’s one of those rare sequels that gives off the ripe cheese odor straight from the previews. I’ve seen some of the old school 3-D’s using the headache inducing glasses with bright red and blue lenses. But life events and my being a cheapskate had prevented me from seeing a movie using the newer tech. Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax would be starting soon, and I thought it would be good to review a family movie for a change. I also want to extend my sympathies to the lady working the ticket booth, who was being mobbed by a small army of young girls ranging in ages from 5-14, and the parent/guardian of the group who was using the opportunity to teach them math problems while giving them money to buy their own tickets.

1971 Book Cover for "The Lorax"

If you’re not a huge fan of Dr. Seuss‘ work, or just are not acquainted with his stories that much, the Doc used his unique rhyming schemes and colorful illustrations to not only entertain, but help teach young children some life lessons. The big budget movie adaptation of the 1971 book “The Lorax“, is like most modern movies, an “adaptation” which has been updated for pop-culture references and marketing reasons. In the movie version, we follow the adventures of Ted (voiced by Zac Efron) who while trying to find ways to impress an older girl he’s fallen in love with, Audrey (voiced by Taylor Swift). He discovers that what she wants most of all is to see a real living tree; since they live in a walled city where everything is made of plastic and metal and controlled by an evil corporation.

On advice from his Grammy Norma (voiced by Betty White), Ted seeks out the Once-ler (voiced by Ed Helms), who was the last known person to have seen a tree and believed to have been the cause of the destruction of the once magnificent forests. While the kids in the audience giggled and laughed at the colorful characters, the movie expressed in a not so subtle tone the dangers of what happens when people think it’s OK to destroy the environment in their quest to build wealth. After Ted finds the Once-ler, he’s regaled with an extended flash back of how the Once-ler was a down on his luck inventor who discovered that cutting down the special trees in the forest would allow him to make a product which anyone would like.

After cutting down the first tree, The Lorax (voiced by Danny DeVito), appears and does his best to explain to the Once-ler why it’s so bad to take away the trees. Through song, dance, and a bit of mild adult humor that was lost on the kids sitting near me. The Lorax and pals, show us the dangers of corporate greed and how people have used it as an excuse to cut down trees and generally screw up the environment. The movie version is a bit different from the 1971 book, where Ted seeks out the Once-ler in an attempt to find out why everyone lives in a near lifeless world. In the movie, we find Ted being motivated not by a desire to save everyone, but to impress the girl he’s got the hots for.

I would agree that yes, the movie preaches a bit on saving the environment. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing, but take it for what you will. The movie makers kept the art style true to the amazing work of Dr. Seuss, and despite changing the motives of the hero from selflessness to snagging the hot-girl, it overall wasn’t a bad movie at all. The voice acting was wonderful, and the musical aspects very well done. Oh, and as for what I thought of the 3-D. Well, it didn’t give me a headache like I thought it might. The in-your face visuals that popped up on occasion were interesting for sure, but I felt it was nice to have more depth to the picture than you would normally see. Does it make me want to see more movies in 3-D? That I honestly can’t say yet, I found it intriguing and a bit more clear to watch than the old-school pictures. But the tech still felt a little limited in ways, and it certainly wasn’t as mind-blowing as most commercials still make it out to be.

For a lighthearted Dr. Seuss themed romantic comedy, with save the planet undertones, I’d have to give The Lorax 4 out of 5 stars.

Modern 3-D movie technology, I’d have to give it 3 out of 5 stars.

  • Who Is John Carter? February 8, 2012
by Susan L. Fox   Hollywood, Jasoom1

A Princess Of Mars, book cover, Frank FrazettaJohn Carter.   A gentleman of Virginia, back when that meant the world to a man’s identity and pride.  A former Army Captain on the Confederate side of the American Civil War in a postwar career mining gold in Arizona, and a lonely death, injured by Apaches, looking up at the Red Planet gleaming in the cave mouth as he bleeds his life away.

He wakes up in an unknown land where he is captured by green warrior giants, whom he impresses with his feats of strength, born of physique molded in Earth’s greater gravity.  And therein begins the saga, stretching across 11 novels and certain literary history.

Edgar Rice Burroughs found himself in a situation in 1911 which might seem familiar to readers in 2011 and beyond.  Flat broke, with a young family to feed, he worked a tedious office job that left him many hours of waiting, so he spend time at his desk reading pulp magazines [being as Facebook had yet to be invented].  At some point, the light went on in his head and the feeling that he could write this stuff.

A Princess of Mars, pulp illustration, 1921UNDER THE MOONS OF MARS was serialized in ALL-STORY MAGAZINE in 1912.  That was his first fiction sale.  His third fiction sale was TARZAN OF THE APES, creating a character and scenario that have lasted nearly a century now.  Burroughs probably invented the now-common “franchise” where a character’s story and image is commercialized through various media.  Tarzan books numbered 26 in all, including TARZAN: THE LOST ADVENTURE, written by John Lansdale from an unfinished draft of Burroughs’ and published by Dark Horse Comics in 1995.  The movies began in 1918 with muscular and bewigged Elmo Lincoln as the king of a silent jungle filmed in the swamps of Louisiana, of all places, standing in for Darkest Africa.  Dozens of versions followed, with varying degrees of faithfulness to the original texts.

The journey leading to the 2012 feature film release JOHN CARTER is as complex as any adventure story.  The stops along the way include ace animator Bob Clampett, father of Daffy Duck and more beloved characters and wacky situations than we can count, contacting the Burroughs estate in 1936 with a serious proposition for the Barsoom series and some test images and footage2.  There was a feature film in 2009 starring the athletic Antonio Sabato Jr., the lush and lovely Traci Lords, the familiar landscape of Vasquez Rocks and a script so bad that the Krypton Radio staff lasted maybe fifteen minutes just to say we tried to watch it.

Announcements of the current production were met with a certain skepticism on the part of us longtime ERB fans, considering the spotted history.  But fans have been won over slowly and surely with casting notices featuring actors who can really act, snippets of footage of the Tharks and other inhuman characters, Space Ships and Ray Guns and some really noteworthy characterization by Taylor Kitch who really sells the man from the 1870’s, lost and finding himself again.

So John Carter, why is his name up in lights?  Tarzan gets his name on the movie marquis and nobody says, “Who’s that?”  Maybe by the time the sequels appear, John Carter will do the same.

1 That’s “Planet Earth” to you and me.

  • Flying People Mystify New York Citizens February 1, 2012

In one of the most creative movie viral campaigns in recent memory, 20th Century Fox teamed up with viral marketing pro’s ThinkModo to create a wild aerial publicity stunt for the film Chronicle. The film follows three high school students (Dane DeHaan, Michael B. Jordan, Alex Russell) who develop super powers and the havoc that comes with those powers.

“Since the three main characters of the movie have the ability to fly, we came up with the idea of staging a few “flying people” sightings around NYC. We achieved that illusion by having 3 custom-made aircraft (which were shaped like human beings) fly above designated areas in NYC and NJ,” says Michael Krivicka from Thinkmodo.

Check out the video which shows how the team at ThinkModo created the people shaped custom aircraft.

Chronicle feaures visual effects by Rhythm & Hues Studios, and hits theaters on February 3rd.

Now that we’ve shown you what a lot of sites are showing you, we’re going to show you what most sites are showing you – where Thinkmodo got their flying people from.<br /> They didn’t design the things. They probably didn’t even buy the plans available from http://www.rcsuperhero.com for $19.95. They probably bought the deluxe models, fully assembled and ready to fly, for about $345 USD.

    Up, up and away.

  • Movie Review: We Take a Look at Aaron Sims' "Archetype" January 20, 2012

Master of Special Effects Aaron Sims debuts his Sci-Fi Short Film “Archetype”

    By Staff Editor, PK.

    About:

You might not know his name unless you happen to watch and remember with amazing detail the credits of movies like Green Lantern, but Aaron Sims has spent 25 years in Hollywood bringing some of the most amazing creatures and effects to life. Today he debuts his science fiction short film Archetype; featuring the story about a combat robot named RL7, which goes on the run from its military creators after it malfunctions and develops vivid memories of once being human. RL7 battles its way to uncovering the shocking truth behind its past as authorities close in; directed by Aaron Sims, and featuring the acting talents of Robert Joy (Land of the Dead, CSI: NY) and David Anders (Heros, 24).

    Review:

The concept of this isn’t super new, there’s been many sci-fi stories over the years where a human being was put into a cyborg body, running a-muck and becoming a hero in the process of rediscovering his/her humanity. Robocop comes to mind, although I’m hard pressed to turn down a good cyborg movie even if the concept is a little repeated. Archetype is beautifully presented by Aaron Sims and White Rock lake Productions, and complemented very well by the acting of Robert Joy, who many may know from his work on CSI: NY. The action is steady but always interesting, yet there’s something deeply intriguing about this film. Could just be the inner sci-fi/cyborg junkie in me, but I found the story to be more than engrossing enough to stand up and say “Please sir, I want some more“.

If they can bring this cast back, then this is one movie I feel is worthy of the big screen treatment, and is something I would pay to go see.  5 out of 5 Stars.

    From his official Biography:

In the mid-80s, Sims moved to Los Angeles to begin his career as a special effects makeup artist. His work quickly attracted the attention of legendary Academy Award® winner Rick Baker, with whom Sims collaborated for the next twelve years. During that time, Sims served as a leading special effects artist on some of the most popular, defining movies of the 1990s: Gremlins 2Batman ForeverMighty Joe YoungNutty ProfessorHow the Grinch Stole Christmas, and Men in Black.

Sims embraced the new computer technology with enthusiasm in the mid 90’s and began to combine Softimage 3D animation software, Photoshop’s painting capabilities and his knowledge and experience as a sculptor and artist.

In the late 1990s, Sims started working for Academy Award® winner, Stan Winston, who encouraged Sims’ pioneering methods. With advanced computers and cutting-edge software, Sims altered the industry’s process of design and development. In 2000 Sims introduced his design process to Steven Spielberg and became the lead character designer for Artificial Intelligence: A.I. Sims created unprecedented designs for all of Spielberg’s robot characters and, in doing so, validated his groundbreaking approach to character creation.

Having raised the bar in the concept design industry, Sims co-created Stan Winston Digital and led the studio, as art director and head concept artist, on such films as ConstantineFantastic FourSky Captain and the World of TomorrowEight BelowTerminator 3: Rise of the Machines, Spielberg’s War of the Worlds, and Tim Burton’s Big Fish.

Sims’ creative approach to concept design using digital technology has had significant affects on the film industry. Softimage development teams have advanced aspects of their software from Sims creative use of their product. Sims has also inspired many of the current techniques used by top artists and designers in the entertainment industries. The demand for training in his methods has led to an ongoing partnership with Alex Alvarez and the Gnomon School of Visual Effects on a series of instructional DVDs.

With the same adventurous spirit that fueled his willingness to embrace digital technology, Sims founded The Aaron Sims Company to work on 30 Days of NightThe Golden CompassI Am LegendThe Day the Earth Stood StillThe Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian,The Incredible HulkThe Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon EmperorClash of the Titans and Sucker Punch.

  • Krypton Radio Looking for On-Air Talent! January 6, 2012

Krypton RadioDo you have what it takes to be our On Air Fan Talent?

Krypton Media Group™ aka Krypton Universe™ / Krypton Radio™, is looking for original Fan Talent to host a morning show on Krypton Radio! We’re looking for individuals, or even a small group that is willing and able to produce its’ own show to be aired on Krypton Radio, with a minimum of three new episodes per calender week.

What is Fan Talent? Fan talent is like what you see on YouTube, people or groups using their talents to produce low-budget, yet high quality shows or series, in lieu of the millions of dollars some big budget studios pay to produce something of the same quality. We admit it, we’re not a huge station with 10 Million listeners, but we’re rising fast and looking for someone to jump on at the ground floor with us and ride to the top.

    How We Can Help You

Let’s face it, everybody and his pet rock has a podcast these days.  Google is full to overflowing with them.  Therein lies the problem, though – how to you get heard in this tidal wave of downloadable content?  When everybody has a podcast and a blog, how do you get noticed? Getting your show heard depends on having a high traffic web site to start with, developing a strong fan base and online community and having contacts with whom you can cross-promote it all.  Krypton Radio has all this and wants to share it with you in exchange for being able to air your creative content on our radio station. We have literally thousands of listeners a month, in 109 countries all around the world.  You can take the next three years and develop your presence on the web from scratch, or you can join ours and skip the hard part.

If you have an idea for a show that you want to do, we can help you by putting it on air for free (radio stations typically have hourly operating costs and normally charge for air time)  and giving you assistance and guidance getting your show produced in a slick, polished manner.  Producers for Krypton Radio will get the benefit of exposure to thousands of listeners each month, and the growing Krypton Radio fan base.  We’ll work with you on cross promotions between your web site and ours, and we’ll coordinate with you on your ad campaigns so that you get maximum yield from your own advertising and promotion.  We want to help you succeed.

    Requirements for On-Air Production:

    • You must have a clear and understandable voice.
    • You must be able to produce/edit own show from home, with minor oversight from Krypton Radio (we reserve the right to review each episode before airing).
    • Your content must be kept PG-13 or better at all times. Kids and their parents both listen to this station.  No vulgar or explicit language or content. If you must use an expletive it must be bleeped or blurred out.  (And obviously, we don’t do either politics or hate speech, but we hope that goes without saying.)
    • You must be able to tape at least 3 shows per week on a consistent basis.
    • Your show must be a half  hour to an hour in length, or time can be varied for purposes of including advertisements (do not insert your own advertising).
    • Experience with the fandom in any of the following themes is strongly preferred:
    • Superhero / Comics
    • Science Fiction
    • Steampunk
    • Fantasy
    • Gaming
    • Must have experience with Social Media (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, etc.)

If you’re interested in joining the Krypton Radio  team and share our passion for the scifi/fantasy geekosphere and the awesome music that comes with it, e-mail  thepitch@kryptonradio.com, include your full legal name, performance name (stage name, if any), and a working phone number. Tell us about yourself, your experiences, what you love about the genres we cover, and what you bring to the table. Please also include your ideas of what you would like to do with the morning show, and anything other information you feel is relevant.

    Important Notes

    • Yes, we can accept podcasts, so long as the podcast can be repackaged as a prerecorded show for broadcast on Krypton Radio.  You must mention that your show is broadcast on Krypton Radio at the beginning and end of each episod. You are getting air time free of charge, this is all we ask for recompense at this time.
    • We love the idea of syndication – airing existing podcasts as broadcast shows.  It shows that you have your production process down and can deliver on a regular basis, because you’ve already been doing it.  We may ask to receive a copy of a finished pilot episode if you’re new to this sort of thing so that we can help you assess where your weak spots in production values are and help you make your show the best it can be.
    • If you’re doing a news show or have news topics in it, the material must be delivered in a timely manner.
    • We are fully BMI / ASCAP licensed.  Which means if you want to include a clip of some song or music in the body of your show, it’s legal.
    • You agree that other than this, that you have acquired all necessary licenses, ownership and clearances for the material you present and agree to indemnify Krypton Radio from any legal ramifications that may result from your use of it in the body of your show. This means that you can have a show that talks about somebody else’s intellectual property or material, but you cannot, for example, make a fanfic show using characters from your favorite TV show, book or movie  as characters in your own production.  Unless you’ve got a contract that gives you the right to do that.

    Don’t Be Shy About This

Lacking one or two bullet points may not stop you from getting your show on the air.  We’ll help you figure stuff out, or figure ways around production problems.  Remember that we’re fan geeks just like you.  Let’s get you on the air!

  • HAPPY NEW YEAR! December 31, 2011

Not a whole lot to say, except Happy New Years! We’re looking forward to bringing you even more music, news, and the best entertainment we can in the new year, we’ll celebrate by sharing some trailers for movies that the boys and girls at Krypton Radio are looking forward to seeing in 2012!

    And in no particular order:

    Battleship

Hasbro has brought us many joys and nightmares over the years; toys that inspired cartoons, which inspired more toys and emptied our parent’s wallets. Twenty years later, karma bites us in the butt, as our wallets are emptied from the movies and toys inspired by our childhood memories. Once again Hasbro eyes our bank accounts, as they flash the next movie monster inspired by a toy that’s been around since many of our parent’s were young. BATTLESHIP!

A board game that as far as anyone can remember, never had a story to it, other than to sink the other guy’s boats and give you a reason to taunt your siblings and friends with your uncanny ability to guess the position of little plastic ships. Yet, we see the next sci-fi epic of Battleship, featuring the story of our great Naval Fleet suddenly attacked by underwater alien life forms, using mechs and an otherworldly assortment of weapons in an attempt to wipe out our servicemen.

    Men In Black 3

Our favorite duo are back in Black, with Men In Black 3! Agent J must travel back in time to discover the mysterious disappearance of his partner and mentor Agent K, who has suddenly died decades before Agent J was born. It might be a bit of a plot hole… but, if Agent K died years before he met Agent J, how exactly did he recruit Agent J, who goes back in time? More fun that watching a worm suck coffee and smoke Marlboros!

    John Carter

As we’ve previously reported on Krypton Radio, John Carter is the big budget and modern day adaptation of  Edgar Rice Burroughs‘ sci-fi fantasy adventure classic, Princess Of Mars.

    Prometheus

We couldn’t say this any better than the synopsis; Ridley Scott, director of “Alien” and “Blade Runner,” returns to the genre he helped define. With PROMETHEUS, he creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

    The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

He’s back for the first time in a big budget adaptation of The Hobbit; the long awaited prequel to the Lord Of The Rings trilogy. Hairy feet, really tall wizards who yell a lot, and much, much more.

    The Dark Night Rises

We basically know the story already, but yeah, we’re anticipating this as much as you are. The conclusion to the Christopher Nolan Batman saga, Batman vs. Bane and Cat-Woman. And with the first two movies being better than any previous Batman movie ever made, we’re expecting a mind-blowing ending to the trilogy.

    GI Joe: Retaliation

It burns! Ok, so we had really hoped that they had learned from their mistakes in the first movie. The fact it was made in the first place! We have nothing against a G.I. Joe movie, but the first one was just… not that wonderful. This trailer is not that inspiring, but hey, it’s worth watching just to get that GI Joe fix. And the fact that they’ve drafted Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and non-other than world renowned action hero, Bruce Willis, may be the ONLY thing that saves this film… maybe.

    The Amazing Spider-Man

Well… Yes, it seems too early for another Spiderman remake, and while we’re interested in yet another interpretation. We, like you are cautiously waiting to see if this is going to be a winner, or a stinker like the last Spiderman movie. As long as they leave out the crying every other scene, then maybe we’ll have a good Spidey movie for 2012.

    Marvel’s The Avengers

Last but not least, Marvel’s The Avengers. All we have to say is… “DO WANT!”

  • Star Wars Holiday Special Cited as Cause of Global Warming December 15, 2011

    Krypton Radio Special Report

Generations scarred for life by Star Wars Holiday Special

    Krypton Radio News Wire

In 1978 a horror befell the world of television, it was made with good intentions, but the producers and writers never could have expected the outcome to have been this bad. On November 17, 1978 – The Star Wars Holiday Special was broadcast on network television to an unsuspecting audience; who would come to wonder why George Lucas had turned on his fans in such a vicious and cruel way. Did he hate us? Was he trying to convince us that his movie wasn’t that good after all? The populace wandered the streets of major cities for days, crying, setting cars on fire and wondering why aliens were watching Jefferson Starship with Art Carney as backup.

While the apocalypse was thought to have included four-horsemen, it was never imagined that it would be three Wookies and Beatrice Arthur. We may never know the full extent of the reason for the devastation unleashed by CBS on its viewers that day; some reports from police agencies included multiple calls of people who had lost the will to live. Fire crews rushed to extinguish a record number of televisions which had caught fire after being blasted with shotguns, and at least one church minster who asked if God had forsaken us after the viewing of the show.

The Star Wars Holiday Special had brought untold levels of destruction and misery to television viewers everywhere, streets flooded with the blood of innocents while cats and dogs were reported to be sleeping together. When the Devil was asked to comment about his involvement, he stated that even he could not have come up with something this deeply disturbing, and that he had a new found respect for George Lucas. United States President Jimmy Carter addressed the nation shortly after the broadcast, and denied rumors that the Soviet Union had captured the CBS studios and were using psychological warfare against the American people.

Krypton Radio Proudly Presents: The Star Wars Holiday Special

From the official wiki on “How to Torture Humanity In 3 Easy Steps”:

The Star Wars Holiday Special is a 1978 American television special set in the Star Wars galaxy. It was one of the first official Star Warsspin-offs, and was directed by Steve Binder. The show was broadcast in its entirety only once, in the United States and Canada, November 17, 1978, on the U.S. television network CBS from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm, Eastern Standard Time (EST), and on the Canadian television network CTV from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, Eastern Standard Time.[1]

In the storyline that ties the special together, Chewbacca and Han Solo visit Kashyyyk, Chewbacca’s home world, to celebrate Life Day. Along the way they are pursued by agents of the Galactic Empire, who are searching for members of the Rebel Alliance on the planet. The special introduces three members of Chewbacca’s family: his father Itchy, his wife Malla, and his son Lumpy (Later retconned to Attichitcuk, Mallatobuck, and Lumpawarrump, respectively).

During the special, scenes also take place in outer space and in spacecraft including the Millennium Falcon and an Imperial Star Destroyer. The variety-show segments and cartoon introduce a few other locales, such as a cantina on the desert planet of Tatooine and a gooey, reddish ocean planet known as Panna.

The program also features many other Star Wars characters, including Luke Skywalker, C-3PO, R2-D2, Darth Vader, Han Solo and Princess Leia Organa (who sings the film’s “theme song”, set to the music of John WilliamsStar Wars theme, near the end). The program includes stock footage from Star Wars,[2] and also features a cartoon produced by Toronto-based Nelvana that officially introduces the bounty hunterBoba Fett.

The special is notorious for its negative reception.[1]Anthony Daniels, in a documentary promoting the worldwide tour of Star Wars: In Concert, notes with a laugh that the Star Warsuniverse includes “The horrible Holiday Special that nobody talks about”. George Lucas did not have significant involvement with the film’s production, and was unhappy with the results. David Acomba, a classmate of Lucas’ at USC film school, had been selected to direct the special, but he chose to leave the project, a decision supported by Lucas.

The Star Wars Holiday Special has never been re-telecast or officially released on home video. It has therefore become the stuff of cultural legend, due to the “underground” quality of its existence, originally being viewed and distributed in off-air recordings made from its original telecast by fans, which were later adapted to content-sharing websites via the Internet.

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is a joke holiday article brought to you by Krypton Radio, George Lucas in reality had very little to do with the horror that is “The Star Wars Holiday Special”. He didn’t write it, didn’t direct it, and actually hates it as much as the rest of the planet. The crew of Krypton Radio would like to wish you and your family a very happy and safe holiday season; we would also like to send a very heartfelt thank you to all of our fans who have supported us during 2011. We look forward to bringing you the best in Sci-Fi, Superhero/Comics, Steampunk, and variety music/news, and entertainment in the 2012 New Year!

    Happy Holidays Everyone!

P.S: We love Star Wars too!

  • Dreamworks Animation: Gift of the Night Fury December 9, 2011

You remember How To Train Your Dragon, we hope? (If not, you’ve really missed something you should go rent or buy; it’s a marvelous story.)

For a short time this morning, the entire short was available on YouTube. We had mistakenly posted a link to it believing it was an official posting from Dreamworks, but we hadn’t checked carefully enough. The video was removed by lunchtime, along with about two dozen other attempts to post the same thing either in whole or in part.

Here is a link to the official trailer, the only part of this left on YouTube that isn’t illegal. We did get to see about half of the thing before it was pulled, and it does look pretty good – and frankly, we’ll probably end up buying ourselves a copy anyway, and we wouldn’t have if we hadn’t seen it on YouTube first.

  • 'Cowboys & Aliens' Producers Sued for Copyright Infringement December 7, 2011

One of those rare cases where the infringement claim seems legit

    Krypton Radio Newswire

Steven John Busti's Cowboys & Aliens

It’s very commonplace in the world of Hollywood for one artist to claim another ripped off his/her idea for a movie or book; but in the case of Steven John Busti, his claim appears to be dead on. Texas based writer and artist Steven John Busti is suing Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, the CEO of Platinum Studios;  Universal Studios, and Dreamworks. Makers of the major motion picture Cowboys & Aliens for copyright infringement on the basis that they illegally used a story based on his creations.

In 1994 Busti came up with the concept for a new comic called “Cowboys And Aliens“, with a story about space aliens in the old-west. The Cowboys And Aliens story was to be featured in his comic series Bizzare Fantasy; a preview of the story appeared on the back cover of Bizzare Fantasy #0.  In January of 1995, “Cowboys and Aliens” was published in the issue “Bizarre Fantasy #1” and was internationally distributed on March 1, 1995.

Two years later, Scott Mitchell Rosenberg and Platinum Studios, Inc produced a eerily familiar image of a Cowboy being chased by a spaceship. And while it’s not impossible for two people to have similar ideas, the title of this image being “Cowboys & Aliens” was too coincidental.  Based on this graphic, Universal Studios and Dreamworks bought the film rights from Rosenberg and Platinum Studios. By 2006 Rosenberg and his Platinum Studios had launched a graphic novel titled “Cowboys & Aliens”, which bore even more similarities to Busti’s “Cowboys And Aliens”.

In both versions of the story, Native Americans discover the aliens and each version features a space craft zooming over a cowboy’s head.  The similarities to Busti’s main villain “Morguu” is also remarkable; Busti also points out that Rosenberg would have seen his story due to Busti’s Cowboys And Aliens being featured in Comic Shop News #388, on the same page as a story regarding Rosenberg and his studio. To date the Cowboys & Aliens movie has grossed over 100 Million domestically, and was released on DVD on December 6 of this year.

Busti through his lawyer sent official legal notification to Universal Studios of their infringing on his work, but the studio never issued a response. Many times infringement cases are over very subtle similarities in works of fiction, but we have to admit that the law appears to be very firmly on Steven John Busti‘s side in this case.

  • The Wizarding World of Harry Potter To Be Built at Universal Studios Hollywood December 5, 2011
    Krypton Radio Newswire
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando Florida

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando Florida

    Hogwarts is coming to Hollywood.

Comcast Corp. is in the final stages of a deal to bring Harry Potter’s magic to life in Hollywood so all us muggles can see it.  The replica of the Universal Studios Harry Potter attrack in Florida will be recreated at the Universal Studios Hollywood theme park.

The Comcast connection comes from when the cable TV giant that bought a majority stake in NBC/Universal in January in a huge package deal worth $13.5 billion.  Then they bought out their  50 percent partner in the Universal Orlando theme park, The Blackstone Group, for $1.03 billion in June.  This gives Comcast a huge, huge stake in the theme park business, and in the nine months through September, its theme-park revenue rose 33 percent from a year ago to $1.49 billion, while operating cash flow jumped 61 percent to $644 million.  The theme park business now amounts to about a quarter of Comcast’s entire operating cash flow.

A contract between Comcast Corp.-owned Universal and Warner Bros., which made the “Harry Potter” movies and controls licensing rights to author J.K. Rowling’s books about the boy wizard, is being finalized and should be done within the next few weeks, the people said.

The first Harry Potter attraction opened in Orlando in June of 2010.  Once it opened, the tourist traffic jumped by 40% – 50% according to a statement made by Comcast executive vice president Steve Burke in September. He said the attraction caused “a gigantic sea change in the profitability.”

Families have come in droves to go on Potter-themed rides, visit places made famous by the books such as the Three Broomsticks Inn, go on rides like the Flight of the Hippogriff, , and even drink a recreation of the wizarding world’s  famous butterbeer – which we hear is delightful (we’re trying to reverse engineer the recipe – we’ll let you know when we have this figured out).

The new attraction is expected to open at Universal Studios Hollywood no earlier than 2015.  Considering that the original park was supposed to take three years and took five to finish, we can probably expect to be able to visit Hogsmeade in Los Angeles some time around 2017.  We’re puzzled over where they’re going to put all this, though.  Universal Studios is built on a hilltop – there isn’t a lot of room up there.  They’re going to have to pull out some of the older attractions or repurpose some of it to make it all fit – and, some of the attractions in Orlando are open-air roller coasters, and that’s something we’re pretty sure they can’t do at the Hollywood site.

Well.  That’s going to be quite a long wait, isn’t it?  What’s a west coast Potterhead to do until then?

The closest thing we’ve found is a place in Los Angeles called Whimsic Alley, located at 5464 Wilshire Boulevard, about three blocks west of La Brea.  They have an indoors recreation of Diagon Alley with little sub-shops and things in which one can buy all manner of wizarding goodies, including licensed Harry Potter toys, apparel, a very nice line of wands – even chocolate frogs and the revolting Berty Bott’s Every Flavor Beans.  In the back there’s a banquet hall which bears a striking resemblance to the Great Hall at Hogwarts, where they do banquets, high tea, summer wizarding camp and birthday parties.

All in all it’s a rather nifty experience, and very much fun for the kids in the family – as well as the grownup kids who drive them there.

  • Machinema: Starfleet Dental presents "Pop Musik" November 29, 2011

We had no idea what to make of Starfleet Dental.  The web site looks like a dentists’ professional organization, until you actually start reading the site:

Starfleet Dental is the galactic voice for dentistry, dedicated to the advancement and leadership of a unified profession and to the promotion of optimal oral health, an essential component of general health.

Okay.  A little odd, you know, dentists don’t usually talk about being galactic in scope.

And then you go on and read:

Founded in 632, the Starfleet Dental is a non-profit professional association representing the galaxies billions of dentists, and Dental professionals.

Located in Coruscant with ancillary offices and stations across galaxy, Starfleet Dental serves its members and the public by managing key oral health issues and by coordinating dental health awareness programs across the galaxy.

And it’s at this point that you know you’ve been had.  It actually appears to be some kind of shill site for the new Star Wars game from LucasArts, currently in beta and costing over $100 million dollars to produce.

But they have a great machinema music video they did using SWTOR (Star Wars: The Old Republic).  It’s not science fiction music, so it won’t end up on the Krypton Radio playlist, but what they did with the SWTOR engine was so cool that we couldn’t let this one go by without sharing it with you.

    Enjoy.

  • Merida of Pixar's "Brave" and Virginia Hankins: Separated at Birth? November 21, 2011

A Beautiful Trailer, And A Stunning Coincidence

    Krypton Radio Newswire

Brave, previously titled The Bear and the Bow,  will be Pixar Animation Studios’ thirteenth animated feature film. The script was penned by Brenda Chapman and directed by both Chapman and Mark Andrews, and is being produced by Katherine Sarafian. The score will be composed by Patrick Doyle.

The film was originally scheduled to be released on June 15, 2012, but Pixar moved it back one week to June 22. The movie is currently in production, and so far it looks amazing.

Fortunately it seems more than just a formula Disney princess story, though like other strong female characters before her, the princess Merida wants more from life than being a decoration on somebody’s left arm.  In the new trailer we see some of the characters, and a fair amount of the Pixar style slaptick comedy we’ve come to expect – but at the same time, the fiery-haired princess has some built-in internal conflicts which appear to drive the story forward. If previous Pixar films are any indication, the trailer doesn’t begin to tell the story of the movie, and in fact may be intentionally leading us all down the garden path, with the real excitement and power of the film lying secretly in wait for the unsuspecting movie-goer.

The graphics are amazing, of course, but we expect nothing less from Pixar, the leader in visual storytelling in animation.

Amazing Coincidence: A Real Life Merida

Virginia Hankins as Merida - a striking, surprising resemblance

Virginia Hankins as Merida - a striking, surprising resemblance

Merida of Pixar's "Brave", voiced by Kathy McDonald

Merida of Pixar's "Brave", voiced by Kathy McDonald

And now for a completely random discovery – when we found pictures of Virginia Hankins, professional actress and stuntwoman, we thought we’d found the real life inspiration for Brave’s Merida.  She does everything from riding motorcycles to riding horses and fighting in full medieval armor (and owns her own armor).  She founded the USC Archery team, and has ten years experience with the sport, including national competition.  She’s appeared on “Deadliest Warrior” as Joan of Arc, and bears a striking resemblance to Merida from Brave with really no effort on her part at all.  But no, Merida is not based on her.

A friend asked her on her Facebook page if she had been the inspiration for Merida. Virginia responded:

“No I’m not. It’s eerie similar though, right? I’m hoping to pick up some stunt work for Disney or Pixar off of it if I get get a good contact point.”

We think Pixar could do worse than hire Virginia to do public appearances as Merida.  We had a hard time selecting pictures of Virginia that most closely illustrate this point, but here are the two that really show the resemblance.

What do you think? We invite your comments.

  • Movie Preview Review - Movies For The Whole Family! November 18, 2011

Taking a look at upcoming movies and hoping they don’t stink!

    By Staff Editor PK

I’m a critic, what can I say? As much as I love movies and especially the Superhero themed ones, I gotta be brutally honest in what I think of them. So I thought I’d share my thoughts on a few of the upcoming movies that I’m anxious to see. Now we at Krypton Radio are not just hardcore fans of Superhero movies, we all enjoy a wide variety of genre’s and so that you don’t feel burned out on the latex clad heroes coming to save the day, I’ll review some other up and coming films that would be great for the entire family!

    ParaNorman

About:From Studio LAIKA the creators of the hit stop-motion children’s film Caroline, comes ParaNorman. An animated action comedy about a young boy with the uncanny talent to talk to the dead and who embarks on a quest to save his town from rampaging zombies.

Featuring the voice talents of: Kodi Smit-McPhee, Tucker Albrizzi, Casey Affleck, Anna Kendrick, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Leslie Mann, Jeff Garlin, John Goodman, Elaine Stritch, Bernard Hill, Alex Borstein, Tempestt Bledsoe, and Hannah Noyes.

Review: I have to say this looks promising, I’ve seen Caroline and it was smartly written and very well animated. This trailer so far is showing just as much promise, and while zombies movies get old at times, I’m hard pressed to turn down a well written animated film. ParaNorman looks to be a well rounded feature film for kids and grown-ups who are still kids at heart.

Rating & Premieres: Not yet rated (but thinking it will get a “G” rating) – August 17, 2012.

Appropriate for: Young kids and just anyone who enjoys a good animated film.

    Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance

About: Nicholas Cage returns as Johnny Blaze in this sequel to Ghost Rider; hiding from the devil in Eastern Europe and recruited by a secret group of monks from the Church, he must protect a young boy from the devil. Blaze must come to terms with his Ghost Rider powers and discover if he can save the boy and get rid of his own curse, if he would only embrace the power of the Rider.

Featuring: Fergus Riordan, and Ciaran Hinds as the devil.

Review: It burns! Take Ghost Rider dip him in tar from skull to boots, and give a living skeleton the ability to pee fire? Then you apparently have enough of a reason to make a sequel; however you would think that it would be kinda hard to hide from the devil no matter where you are on the planet. Now I actually enjoyed the first Ghost Rider movie, loved it in-fact, but this gave me reason to pause when the directors of the film are the ones intro’ing the trailer and telling us how much we’re going to love the movie. I would think most film-makers would let the movie speak for itself, but they needed to give us a heads up about how much the movie is going to rock. Nicholas Cage is a real hit and miss kind of star in my book, he was truly wonderful in Lord Of War and I enjoyed his performance in the first Rider film, but this makes me stop and groan a bit. I’ll reserve final judgement until I see the movie, but my hopes will not be too high for this theatrical continuation of the storyline.

    Rating & Premieres: PG-13 & will be released on February 17, 2012.

Appropriate for: Due to the violence and adult humor, I’d say keep this to kids 13-14 or older.

Detective Dee: And The Mystery Of The Phantom Flame

About:Official synopsis: “On the eve of her coronation as Empress, China’s most powerful woman is haunted by a chilling murder mystery: seven men under her command have burst into flames, leaving behind only black ash and skeletal bones. Recognizing this threat to her power, she turns to the infamous Dee Renjie: a man whose unparalleled wisdom is matched only by his martial arts skills. As he battles a series of bizarre dangers, he unveils a chilling truth that places his life, and the future of an entire dynasty, in peril.”

Featuring: Andy Lau, Bingbing Li, Carina Lau, and Tony Leug Ka-fai, amongst a cast of a thousand or more.

Review: While looking through the various film trailers, I really wanted to find a movie that was just a bit different. We’re being deluged with remakes and spin-offs these days, so when I saw Detective Dee it caught my eye enough to give it a chance. I have to say that this is Sherlock Holmes meets Kung-Fu Panda, the scene where a large antlered deer (which was voiced by a goat) is kung-fu kicked in mid-air nearly had me on the floor laughing. If like me, you enjoy a steady diet of kung-fu action, confused comedy and somehow mixed with an engaging storyline that involves old-world China and deer kicking, then this movie is for you!

Rating & Premieres: PG-13 & is already in theaters!

Appropriate for: Due to the violence and adult humor, I’d say keep this to kids 13-14 or older.

    Act Of Valor

About:IMDB Synopsis: An unprecedented blend of real-life heroism and original filmmaking, Act of Valor stars a group of active-duty Navy SEALs in a powerful story of contemporary global anti-terrorism. Inspired by true events, the film combines stunning combat sequences, up-to-the minute battlefield technology and heart-pumping emotion for the ultimate action adventure. Act of Valor takes audiences deep into the secretive world of the most elite, highly trained group of warriors in the modern world. When the rescue of a kidnapped CIA operative leads to the discovery of a deadly terrorist plot against the U.S., a team of SEALs is dispatched on a worldwide manhunt. As the valiant men of Bandito Platoon race to stop a coordinated attack that could kill and wound thousands of American civilians, they must balance their commitment to country, team and their families back home. Each time they accomplish their mission, a new piece of intelligence reveals another shocking twist to the deadly terror plot, which stretches from Chechnya to the Philippines and from Ukraine to Somalia. The widening operation sends the SEALs across the globe as they track the terrorist ring to the U.S.-Mexico border, where they engage in an epic firefight with an outcome that has potentially unimaginable consequences for the future of America.

Featuring: Active Duty Navy SEALs, Roselyn Sanchex, Alex Veadov, Jason Cottle, Nestor Searrano

Review: I intended for this to be a list of reviews for mostly family grade movies, but when I saw the trailer for Act Of Valor, I thought this is one the adults need to see. Our real life superheroes are those who take on these kinds of missions, doing what no one else can. They fight to keep us safe day and night, and this movie is a true tribute to the dedication and heroic efforts of our nations military. While the kids are watching Ghost Rider, Mom and Dad need to pop next door to see Act Of Valor. I calling this movie a must see!

    Rating & Premieres: “R” & coming to theaters February 17, 2012.

Appropriate for: Sorry kids, but this one is for the adults. But if Mom and Dad feel comfortable with the older kids seeing it, it’s looking like a great movie.

Krypton Radio Special ReportDirector of ‘Harry ‘Potter’ Claims Working With BBC on Doctor Who Movie;  BBC Affirms/Denies

    Krypton Radio Newswire

“Harry Potter” director David Yates says he’s teaming up with the BBC to work up a motion picture version of their explosively popular science fiction series “Doctor Who”. For those of you who have spent the last 50 years under a rock, Doctor Who is a time-travelling humanoid alien, the last survivor of a race known as the Time Lords.  He  explores the universe in a sentient time machine called the TARDIS that flies through both time and space, whose exterior appears as a blue London police box. Usually accompanied by one or more human traveling companions, he fights injustice, rights wrongs, and saves civilizations from extinction. “Doctor Who,” starring Matt Smith as the 11th incarnation of the Doctor, is now one of the BBC’s most lucrative global TV franchises, and certainly one of the hottest science fantasy properties in the world – and Smith has attained what can only be described as “rock star” status in Britain.

Yates, who directed the last four Potter films, told Daily Variety that he is about to start work on developing a “Doctor Who” movie with Jane Tranter, head of L.A.-based BBC Worldwide Productions, but here’s the catch: the BBC has both confirmed ”and” denied that such a production is in the works. The latest word extracted from representatives of the BBC by IO9  is that no such project exists.  Fan reaction to that one has been ecstatic, but there are enough statements appearing to come from the BBC that we’re not ready to breath a sigh of relief yet ourselves.

David Yates, director of the most recent four Harry Potter films

David Yates, director of the most recent four Harry Potter films

“The notion of the time-travelling Time Lord is such a strong one, because you can express story and drama in any dimension or time,” Yates said.

What has fan’s reactions ranging from scratching their heads to backing away in open mouthed terror is Yates’ clearly stated intent to discard the TV series entirely.  He’s  made clear that his movie adaptation would not follow on from the current TV series, but would take a completely fresh approach to the material.

“Russell T. Davies and then Steven Moffat have done their own transformations, which were fantastic, but we have to put that aside and start from scratch,” he said.

Yates and Tranter are looking for writers on both sides of the Atlantic, despite the fact that the BBC has publicly disowned the project. (We wish them luck with that. )

“We want a British sensibility, but having said that, Steve Kloves wrote the Potter films and captured that British sensibility perfectly, so we are looking at American writers too,” he explained.

The series ran from 1963 to 1989, and then was successfully rebooted in 2005 by writer Russell T. Davies and subsequently by Steven Moffat (“The Adventures of Tintin”). Tranter was head of dramatic production at the BBC for the revival.  There are two previous films, based on the TV series: “Doctor Who and the Daleks” (1965) and “Doctor Who: Daleks’ Invasion Earth 2150 A.D.” (1966), both starring Peter Cushing- but the combination of Yates and Tranter bring more muscle to a Doctor Who film project than has ever been applied to the idea before.  However, the on-again-off-again support the project has been shown by the BBC offers some hope that the project will never get off the ground, let alone into space.

As reported by the Doctor Who and the Tardis Community page on Facebook, Steven Moffat had this response to talk of the Yates Doctor Who Movie :

‘Announcing my personal moonshot, starting from scratch. No money, no plan, no help from NASA. But I know where the moon is – I’ve seen it.’

“We’re looking at writers now. We’re going to spend two to three years to get it right,” Yates was quoted as saying. “It needs quite a radical transformation to take it into the bigger arena.”  Yates’ plan is to keep the name and the general concept, and discard everything else – kind of like jacking up the radiator cap off a car that’s been running fine all along, junking the car and building a new one underneath the cap.

    Blinkblink.

In other words Yates and this Tranter woman are the only two people on this project, and while the BBC doesn’t come right out and say they’re not doing a film,  there’s a fair amount of possible disinformation about it floating around.  A recent comment from  BBC executive Edward Russell via Twitter:

Off Twitter for a few hours and the Doctor Who world explodes. There’s always talk of a movie. Perhaps? Maybe one day. But not right now!

The BBC’s official Dr. Who Magazine tweeted this:

To those hearing Doctor Who movie rumours, it’s just the same rumours which have been going round for years. Nothing’s currently happening!

The nearest thing to an official published statement we can find came from BBC America, who said this via Twitter:

A Doctor Who feature film remains in development w/ BBC Worldwide Productions in LA. As of yet no script, cast or production crew in place.

So – it’s “in development”.  But there’s no script, cast, or production crew in place.  Or presumably, production company.  All we have is Yates and Tranter’s statement that they’re working on it.  In the language of the entertainment industry that means “we get together and knock ideas around once a month over expensive lunches and dinners so we can call them tax deductions.”

Frankly, we hope that’s all it means.

What do you think?  Is the movie announcement the real deal, or just a press release for the sake of having something to say? Would Yates pull this off?  Or would it be the biggest disaster since that crack in Amelia Pond’s bedroom wall?  Don’t get us wrong, Yates is a fine director and did a pretty terrific job on the Harry Potter movies, which everybody loved.  But this?

    We invite your comments.

  • Turns Out Michael J. Fox Can Actually Play November 14, 2011

Yes, we know this isn’t news.  Well it’s not news in the traditional sense of being news.  But, you know, you go to the movies and see the lead actor performing some musical or dance number in the movie, and you just know it’s faked or loop in somehow.  It’s not his voice, it’s not his hands on the guitar, it’s somebody else playing along and his microphone or guitar aren’t even plugged in.

Remember that great scene in Back to the Future II from 1985 where Michael J. Fox was shredding on stage at his own parents’ senior prom?

Yeah. Us too. Turns out that wasn’t fake at all.

Here’s the man himself at a charity event just last night.  Michael J. Fox has Parkinson’s disease, and was diagnosed with it at the very young age of 30.  He decided he’d use his celebrity raise public awareness to the fight against Parkinson’s, so it’s a fair bet the charity had to do with that.

Here’s to a truly timeless man, and the genuine article.

  • Bad News for ‘Man of Steel’? October 30, 2011

    Krypton Radio Special Report

    Never-Ending Battle in Courtrooms

    by Dezdemona Thanatos
Henry Cavill on the set of Man of Steel

Henry Cavill on the set of Man of Steel - from the looks of this, the cape will be mostly CG.

Production and filming for Christopher Nolan’s  Superman movie, set to be a reboot, with the hopeful release on June 14th 2013.  However the movie may not be all that fans hope it to be. It’s been stated that the production was rushed ahead of what it should have been, with a script that has been said, by the director, still needs work.

In fact it’s rumored that the director, Zack Snyder, was specifically picked for his willingness to work with their needed time-frame.  It’s been said that originally Director Aronofsky was wanted to direct it, but that he wanted the time to fix the script and do it properly, which may have taken many months to do.

And with the threat of a potential lawsuit by Jerry Siegel’s heirs hanging over their heads, they needed to get it done right away. If the production wasn’t started in 2011 Warner Bros. ran the risk of losing rights to making any more of the Superman movies.

DC Comics and Warner Bros. have been in legal disputes with Marc Toberoff on behalf of the heirs to both Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster for some time. However lawyers for DC and Warner Bros. have potentially found a way to have Toberoff removed from the proceedings.  He is being accused of interfering as a competing business owner. He owns and works on behalf of Pacific Pictures and reputedly has made business deals with the Siegel and Schuster heirs.  The result of this is that Toberoff may have to resign from his position in this case.

Nikki Finke from Deadline got this quote from Toberoff.

“Having substantially lost the Superman copyright, Warner Bros and DC Comics and their new counsel Daniel Petrocelli now resort to gutter tactics and personally libel me rather than just litigate the remainder of the case on the merits. Even before filing this lawsuit, Warner Bros launched a well cordinated media campaign to defame me. Warner Brothers and Mr. Petrocelli are well aware that their frivolous allegations in the complaint will never prevail. However, that’s not the purpose of the lawsuit against me. The purpose is to defame me or potentially conflict me out of the case and thereby pressure my clients to sell back the Superman and Superboy copyrights they’ve recaptured at a distress sales price.

Warner Bros, DC Comics, and Mr. Pertocelli disingenously claim that I have a financial interest in the lawsuits when they know full well that the only interest I have is a contingent legal fee. And the last time I checked, a lawyer working on a contigent fee basis is legal in the State of California. The goal here is to muddy the waters and avoid litigating on the merits. As further proof of that, Warner Brothers, DC Comics, and Mr. Petrocelli attach to their complaint an anonymous letter spewing unsubstantiated and unattributed accusations — and time will tell whether Warner Bros itself had a hand in that letter. Such unethical thug tactics are nothing short of deplorable. Warner Bros and Mr. Petrocelli should be ashamed of themselves.

In recognition of the inferior bargaining power of authors who seek to get their works published, the termination provisions of the Copyright Act specifically allow authors and their heirs the right to recover their copyrights by terminating, with an emphasis on terminating, prior grants of copyrights. Ridiculously, Warner Brothers/DC Comics is alleging that the exercise of this termination right is the basis for their frivolous claim of tortious interference with an existing contract. The Siegels, Shusters, and I will vigorously defend against these baseless accusations, and my clients remain undeterred in their efforts to protect their Superman and Superboy copyrights.”

The accusations revolve around documents stolen from Toberoff’s office and delivered anonymously to Warner Bros. studios. Supposedly these documents prove that Toberoff was making deals with the estates that led them to reject ‘mutually beneficial’ deals with DC and then try to recapture the copyrights to the Man of Steel.

It seems however that Siegel and Shuster’s estates may still get all copyrights to Superman between the two of them. Siegel’s heirs were already awarded half the rights to Superman, with Shuster’s estate due to receive the second half in 2013.

According to SlashFilm the reboot may follow close to ‘Superman: Birthright’. It’s a twelve issue comic that showed Clark’s origin in his early twenties as a freelance reporter struggling with the decision of whether or not to become Superman.

IMDB lists the actors for Lois Lane and the Man of Steel as Amy Adams (Giselle from ‘Enchanted’) and Henry Cavill (Charles Brandon ‘The Tudors’).  Filling out the cast are also, Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner, Laurence Fishburne, and Diane Lane.

All in all a decent cast, so that doesn’t disappoint at least. But in the end we’ll just have to wait and see how Snyder pulls off the rush job. So here’s hoping for a wonderful save and an excellent movie.

  • Buy the Batmobile. It's on eBay... September 7, 2011
    Krypton Radio Newswire

The catch is the price: Casey Putsch of Putsch Racing is selling this amazing car for only $620,000. Ummmm, yeah, better check to see if this is one of those months with an extra paycheck in it. You may need it.

The vehicle is a replica of the car driven by Michael Keaton in Tim Burton’s 1989 movie Batman and is touted as the “world’s only turbine-powered bat car.”

Putsch says the car, built this year, features 365-horsepower Boeing turboshaft engine and a centrally mounted touch-screen iPad with 3G and is able to run on jet, kerosene or diesel fuel. It was built in a professional racing facility alongside Grand Prix, DTM, Indy and Sports Racing cars.

“Having a perfect reliability record, this car is ready to be enjoyed by an enthusiast who is looking for the ultimate luxury in one-upmanship,” Putsch writes in the eBay listing, adding that the vehicle’s “construction is in a completely different league than both replicas and of course the movie prop cars.”

The car also won the People’s Choice Award at the Ault Park Concours d’Elegance and has been seen on various TV programs. You can see Putsch driving this amazing vehicle in the video below.

What? Of course we want one. Wouldn’t you?

  • Weekly Artist Spotlight: Karuna Tanahashi, the Joss Junkie! September 7, 2011

With lights flashing and siren blaring we race into action, chasing another Monday edition of Weekly Artist Spotlight!

Or it would have been, if Monday hadn’t been Labor Day and we hadn’t all been at the big barbeque.  You know which one – everybody has a barbecue on Labor Day!

Talent can be found in some of the most surprising places, and today’s featured artist is Karuna Tanahashi, otherwise known as the Joss Junkie.  Her creative expression begins with what fans of Joss Whedon’s work often call the “Buffy-verse”, describing “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, which aired between 1997 and 2003,  and the show spun off from it, “Angel”, which first aired in 1999.

We met up with Karuna at this aforementioned barbecue,  and discovered that she was not only making stuff fan boys and girls go crazy for, but that OH MY GOD can this girl sing! She’s working on a series of songs all about the bad boys of the Buffy-verse, and plans to have enough to make a whole CD album in about a year’s time.  Until then, you can hear some of her work on Krypton Radio.

Karuna has a voice like a fine musical instrument, with an expressive range equal or better than many popular artists getting airplay on commercial radio today.  In the video below, “Ooh, Mr. Mayor”, she demonstrates her ability as a torch singer - and remember that she writes all this material herself!  Have a listen.

Outside of the TV series, the Buffyverse has been officially expanded and elaborated on by authors and artists in the so-called “Buffyverse Expanded Universe“. The creators of these works may or may not keep to established continuity. Similarly, writers for the TV series were under no obligation to use information which had been established by the Expanded Universe, and sometimes contradicted such continuity.

Dark Horse has published the Buffy comics since 1998.[80] In 2003, Whedon wrote an eight-issue miniseries for Dark Horse Comics titled Fray, about a Slayer in the future. Following the publication of Tales of the Vampires in 2004, Dark Horse Comics halted publication on Buffyverse-related comics and graphic novels. The company is currently producing Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight with forty issues beginning in March 2007, to pick up where the television show left off – taking the place of an eighth canonical season.[42] The first story arc is also written by Whedon, and is called “The Long Way Home” which has been widely well-received, with circulation rivalling industry leaders DC and Marvel’s top-selling titles.[81] Also after “The Long Way Home” came other story arcs like Faith’s return in “No Future for You” and a Fray cross-over in “Time of Your Life“.

Pocket Books hold the license to produce Buffy novels, of which they have published more than sixty since 1998. These sometimes flesh out background information on characters; for example, Go Ask Malice details the events that lead up to Faith arriving in Sunnydale. The most recent novels include Carnival of Souls, Blackout, Portal Through Time, Bad Bargain, and The Deathless.

Five official Buffy video games have been released on portable and home consoles.[82] Most notably, Buffy the Vampire Slayer for Xbox in 2002 and Chaos Bleeds for GameCube, Xbox and PlayStation 2 in 2003.[83]

Karuna Tanahashi is a Los Angeles-based actress and filmmaker. In addition to the usual film-theatre-yada yada, she blogs a bunch, writes geeky love songs to vampires and demons, and dances around with things on fire. Other hobbies include making vegan cupcakes, cheesy puns, and jumping into large bodies of uncomfortably cold water.

Weekly Artist Spotlight, is Krypton Radio’s bi-weekly feature to help raise awareness of the artists who you may not have heard about through mainstream media. All content used in this feature, is from publicly available sources, and is used solely to promote the artists we think are just plain cool.

  • Portal Fan Film "No Escape" Amazes August 28, 2011
    Krypton Radio Newswire

We’ve seen a lot of fan films, but this one is truly impressive.

In director Dan Trachtenberg’s Portal: No Escape, Danielle Rayne plays a prisoner who comes into possession of one of the game’s portal-producing guns, and attempts to make her escape from the mysterious facility holding her captive.

Trachtenburg is a commercial director and the co-host of weekly online video series “The Totally Rad Show,” and also directed the short horror film “More Than You Can Chew” before taking on Portal.  Portal: No Escape premiered during this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego, and received a standing ovation from the audience.

Have a look at this one – it’s deliciously portally.

  • FBC Special: Fanboy Comics reviews Conan the Barbarian August 21, 2011
    "Conan the Barbarian"

    "Conan the Barbarian"

Vagabond “Tony” Carter is on hiatus till the beginning of his new season on September 12, so in place of his regularly scheduled show for Monday we’re pleased to present Fanboy Comics’ review of “Conan the Barbarian”, released just this week on August 19, and starring Jason Momoa, Ron Perlman and Rose McGowan. It’s the tale of Conan the Cimmerian and his adventures across the continent of Hyboria on a quest to avenge the murder of his father and the slaughter of his village.

    You look confused.

Oh, I see. Fanboy Comics doesn’t star Jason Momoa, Ron Perlman and Rose McGowan. That’s the Conan movie. The Fanboy people are Bryant Dillon, Barbra Dillon, Sam Rhodes, and Drew Siragusa.

Tune in Monday at 8AM, 10AM, 4PM or 8PM Pacific time to hear it. It’s going to be run only one day – but if you miss it, you’ll be able to download it as a podcast from the Fanboy Comics web site, or directly from the Fanboy Comics episode guide here on the Krypton Radio home page.

We and the the nice folks at Fanboy hope you enjoy this special presentation – stay tuned for more special events.  There’s a lot more waiting in the wings – so as Tony would say, “Look to the skies – and enjoy the tunes!”

  • Weekly Artist Spotlight: the great Luke Ski & Indy Mogul August 12, 2011

And we’re back to another wild wacky and slightly toasty Friday edition of Weekly Artist Spotlight, Monday’s edition was postponed due to the issues Krypton Radio was having with its hosting company. Citing an odd hardware failure, the hosting company apologizes and they even gave us a bit of an upgrade and got us setup so we’re nice and stable again. So let’s kick off today with The Great Luke Ski, and his hit song Marvel Poppins. Following up the musical comedy stylings of Luke, we  take a look at the folks from Indy Mogul who share our love of superheroes and even offer a video on how to make your own Captain America costume, complete with shield!

    the great Luke Ski

    From Wikipedia

Luke Ski (also known as “the great Luke Ski”; born Luke Collis Sienkowski) is a parody, filk and rap artist who writes, records and performs comedy music. (The decapitalization of the words “the great” in Sienkowski’s stage name is his own preferred spelling, and the title has appeared as such on all of his albums to date.) He had the #1 most requested song on the Dr. Demento radio show in both 2002 and 2003 (“Peter Parker” featuring Sudden Death and “Stealing Like a Hobbit”, respectively.[1][2])

Topics of his parodies have included The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Spider-Man, Keanu Reeves and Hamlet. He has, in one song, parodied all the Star Trek television shows. His parody songs are reminiscent of the pop music works of “Weird Al” Yankovic. Luke helped bring parodies of rap and hip-hop to Science Fiction conventions. He does not play an instrument, and sings to pre-recorded music, often in costume or with props. Much of his work satirizes science fiction movies, television, and their marketing and are often from a fan perspective. Many of his longer works are snippets of song parodies collected together into an extended medley, such as Grease Wars or It’s A Fanboy Christmas.

Since 1996, Luke has released numerous albums. He is a frequent performer at science fiction and gaming conventions. Luke is also a caricature artist, and has done the cover art for several of his own albums (with the notable exception of UnCONVENTIONal, which features the artwork of John Kovalic).

Luke Ski hosts the weekly show Dementia Revolution on Dementia Radio, and has a bi-monthly podcast that he hosts with back-up vocalist Carrie Dahlby called “Luke and Carrie’s Bad Rapport” in each episode there are several segments in which the two talk about different things, this podcast also regularly features comedy music.

Fun movie fact, did you know that: Kodak Safety Film is called that because it is guaranteed not to explode.  Originally, film was made of nitrate, which under the proper circumstances could catch fire in the projection booth or even detonate in the cans on rare occasions.

Gives a whole new meaning to a movie bombing at the box-office!

  • Pottermore Launch Marred by Scammers and Hackers August 9, 2011
    article by L. Christopher Bird
Harry Potter series author author J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter series author author J.K. Rowling

Pottermore is an upcoming interactive website by Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling and sponsored by Sony.  The site promises a new reading experience centered around the seven Harry Potter novels with additional content written by Rowling fleshing out background information and settings as well as user-generated content expanding the story of Harry Potter.

There was much excitement when it was announced that Pottermore would be holding a contest for early registration at the free website. Over 7 days starting on July 31st, and ending August 7 a clue was posted on the Pottermore site which lead to a registration page for approximately 143,000 users per day for a total of one million registrations by the contest’s end. Registrations will be open to everyone starting October, 2011.

Enthusiasm for the site has been overwhelming and many people are anxious to see the site before the October open registration and a market for free Pottermore accounts have been selling on ebay and other sites for as much as $100.  Selling of the early registration accounts from the contest is against the terms of service, and Pottermore may cancel any accounts found to have been sold on secondary markets.

The enthusiasm for Pottermore has opened the floodgates for malicious schemes usually centered on the premise of granting early access to the site. Sites claiming to be selling or giving away Pottermore accounts are being used to gather personal information and deliver malware. There are Youtube videos which claim to be instructional on how to sign up for a Pottermore beta account which if followed will just lead you to one of these early-registration scams.

As of this date there are no legitimate ways to gain early access to the Pottermore site other than the million contest winners, and one should be wary of any claims to the contrary.  Pottermore will be open to everyone in October, and the site wll be free. You can submit your email address at the official site http://www.pottermore.com to be notified when registration is open. All other sites claiming to represent Pottermore should be treated as suspect.

  • First Peek: Henry Cavill as Superman August 5, 2011

    Krypton Radio Special Report

     Krypton Radio Newswire
    Henry Cavill as Clark Kent

Henry Cavill as Clark Kent. Note that the familiar spitcurl...

    Henry Cavill as Superman

Henry Cavill as Superman, doing what Superman does best. His hair is slicked back, the trunks are missing (the trunks area is solid blue now) and the cape has some real mass to it. We do hope they switch the hairstyles and get Cavill a little trim before they shoot too much of this stuff.

We’ve all been holding our collective breath waiting to see what British actor Henry Cavill was going to look like as the title role in the new Zack Snyder-directed “Man of Steel” Superman reboot, the release of which has now been pushed back to 2013. And, apart the observation shared by many that he has Too Much Hair, we think he might be able to pull this off. We like the sort of armor mesh appearance of the new suit. He looks tough in this, and he makes the suit look good. Cavill said in an interview with Total Film Magazine that he trains for two and a half hours a day to make that suit look as good as it does. He’s very aware that there is a huge mantle of responsibility to the role, and we’re not just talking about that heavy pleated cape.

However, as usual, they couldn’t resist tinkering with the traditional design of the suit itself, and the red trunks are gone (no, he’s not naked, he’s just wearing his underwear inside instead of outside now, to go along with the new DC Universe restyling of the famous costume). Oh, well, at least they didn’t point the buckle and make the trunks into hot pants.

A few days ago we received word that Lawrence Fishburne has been cast as Perry White. We hope this doesn’t portend other arbitrary tinkering with the elements of the Superman mythos – and that reminds us that what most of the fans are looking for is a faithful treatment of the material.

    Here’s the press release:

BURBANK, CA, August 4, 2011 – Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures have provided the first look at the new “Man of Steel,” revealing star Henry Cavill as Superman in the film from director Zack Snyder.

The film also stars three-time Oscar® nominee Amy Adams (“The Fighter”) as Daily Planet journalist Lois Lane, and Oscar® nominee Laurence Fishburne (“What’s Love Got to Do with It”) as her editor-in-chief, Perry White.  Starring as Clark Kent’s adoptive parents, Martha and Jonathan Kent, are Oscar® nominee Diane Lane (“Unfaithful”) and Academy Award® winner Kevin Costner (“Dances with Wolves”).Squaring off against the superhero are two other surviving Kryptonians, the villainous General Zod, played by Oscar® nominee Michael Shannon (“Revolutionary Road”), and Faora, Zod’s evil partner, played by Antje Traue.  Also from Superman’s native Krypton are Lara Lor-Van, Superman’s mother, played by Julia Ormond, and Superman’s father, Jor-El, portrayed by Academy Award® winner Russell Crowe (“Gladiator”).

Rounding out the cast are Harry Lennix as U.S. military man General Swanwick, as well as Christopher Meloni as Colonel Hardy.“Man of Steel” is being produced by Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder.  The screenplay was written by David S. Goyer, from a story by Goyer and Nolan, based upon Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster and published by DC Comics.  Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.

“Superman Returns” did well, since its place in the pantheon of films about Earth’s Greatest Hero was pretty much assured, but it also had problematic story elements.  The film was supposed to pick up where Superman 2 left off, but the direction they took things had Superman discovering that he and Lois had had a child out of wedlock, giving them what was essentially a radioactive storyline.  There was certainly nowhere you could go with the concept once it had been laid out like that, and apparently cooler heads have prevailed and the new “Man of Steel” movie follows the lead of other superhero movies and pretends the events of the previous film simply never happened.  We think that was a wise move.

“Man of Steel” is scheduled to be released on June 14, 2013.
