The second issue of the new story arc Avengers Vs. X-Men is officially out, and release parties happened all over the country last Tuesday. Fans were waiting in line before the stores opened to get their hands on a copy of the new book captained by writer Ed Brubaker.. Avengers Vs. X-Men is what Brubaker calls an “event” story arc, and this time he’s not working alone – he has a team of writers and artist working with him.
For the kickoff event, we attended one of two parties at Earth Two Comics in Sherman Oaks California last week. People poured into the store as soon as the doors were opened, but had to wait an hour until 8PM when the book officially went on sale. People were lined up outside before the store even opened, and the place was jumping and full of happy fans.
Issue #1 of the series sets the stage for the conflict to come, and the cover by Jim Cheung is one of those classic face to face crowd montage covers. We’ve all seen these sorts of covers, and while the idea is nothing new, Jim Cheung does it justice.
Why did we call it the second issue when it’s issue #1? Because the prelude, issue #0, came out last month. It’s still available if you know where to look, and one variant cover is a simple white cover with a logo on it – no cover art at all.
Inside the book it’s clean and direct, and the arrival of the Phoenix force on Earth becomes the pivot point of the entire story to come. The writing is uncomplicated but solid and well articulated, the characters’ portrayals have depth and dimension we’ve come to expect from Brubaker.
The next book is due out in another week – which is probably a good thing. Having ravenously scarfed up the first two, the fans are already getting restless. Us included.
