Bucky is Back, the Falcon Flies, and Three Circle for the Top Spot

Marvel Studios is busting with a heroic level of activity these days, trying to churn out top notch comic book movies to a rabid public hungry for more from their favorite superheroes. In today’s spotlight, we take a look at casting for one of this intrepid fan’s favorite Avengers franchises, second only to IRON MAN…the star spangled man himself, CAPTAIN AMERICA!

From left to right: Anna Kendrick, Felicity Jones, and Imogen Poots.

Many are reporting that Sebastian Stan will return to reprise his role as Bucky Barnes, known to comic fans as the title character of The Winter Soldier. It’s also being reported that Anthony Mackie of REAL STEEL and ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER fame has been signed to play The Falcon, but now film makers are on a quest to find themselves a leading lady. New York Daily News is reporting, along with the news on Mackie, that three actresses are being considered for this as yet undisclosed role: Anna Kendrick (UP IN THE AIR), Imogen Poots (FRIGHT NIGHT), and Felicity Jones (LIKE CRAZY).

While the role of the female lead has not been revealed, many are speculating that it will be that of SHIELD agent Sharon Carter, and no, the name is not coincidental. Fans of the comics will remember that Sharon is the niece of one Peggy Carter, the Captain’s first love, played by Hayley Atwell in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER.

So who looks good for this role? If it is, in fact, Sharon Carter being cast, my personal opinion is that Anna Kendrick may be best for the role. Her physical type hearkens back to Hayley Atwell more, and she already has some experience with blockbusters of this sort with her prior roles in the TWILIGHT movies. She’s also a higher caliber actress than Poots, and Jones may lack the necessary experience to really hold a leading role in a film of this nature.

That is, however, one humble reporter’s opinion. What are your thoughts on the casting choices?

Captain Canuck

Krypton Radio Newswire

Captain Canuck (Almost Captain Canada)

Many American’s may think of Marvel‘s Wolverine from the X-Men when you mention Canadian Superhero, but Canada has it’s very own version of Captain America. No, not Captain Canada (you’re close though), but Captain Canuck. Created in 1971 by Richard Comely and art student Ron Leishman; the duo saw how American superheroes were dominating the comics industry, and at that time there was a strong sense of nationalism with Canada, so they came up with the idea of Captain Canuck.

The name similarity to Canada’s first superhero Johnny Canuck, was pure coincidence as Comely and Leishman oddly had never heard of him. Johnny Canuck was a political cartoon character revived and published during World War 2 as an action hero, featuring a meek teenage Canadian superhero who came close to beating Hitler. Much like Captain America was invented as a way to boost patriotism amongst the young, with his comic book adventures to defeat Nazis and Adolf Hitler himself.

Recently announced at the San Diego Comic Con and via press release, by Minds Eye Entertainment:

Canadian-born Hollywood-based screenwriter Arne Olsen (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie, Cop And A Half, Repeaters) is on board to adapt Richard Comely’s iconic Canadian crusader for the big screen. Olsen will script the film adaptation based on the CAPTAIN CANUCK comic book series for Minds Eye Entertainment. “CAPTAIN CANUCK is not only a Canadian icon but an internationally recognized superhero,” said Minds Eye Entertainment CEO Kevin DeWalt. “Arne Olsen is the perfect choice to pen a stand-out action-packed script.” The first issue of CAPTAIN CANUCK hit newsstands in May 1975. Thirty-seven years later, the superhero franchise has endeared fans around the world.

To date, more than 2 million copies have been sold and 26 different editions have been printed. IDW Publishing recently published two hard cover collections of the original issues that have since sold out. The CAPTAIN CANUCK legacy is enduring. Canada Post issued a CAPTAIN CANUCK postage stamp in 1995. CAPTAIN CANUCK was also featured on the cover of TIME magazine. Creator Richard Comely, who will work closely with the screenwriter added: “With Arne Olsen on board we are set to deliver a movie that will delight CAPTAIN CANUCK followers and welcome new fans around the world.”

Arne Olsen who is an American Film Institute graduate and PRAXIS mentor, has had 12 movies produced including MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS:THE MOVIE for 20TH Century Fox, COP AND A HALF for Universal, ALL DOGS GO TO HEAVEN II for MGM and RED SCORPION for Shapiro/Glickenhaus. He sold the pitch RAPID FIRE to Universal and the spec horror-comedy DRAKE DIAMOND:EXORCIST FOR HIRE to Warners. He wrote and directed HERE’S TO LIFE, which was nominated for 9 Genies, winning one. He wrote the pilot ESCAPE FROM ATLANTIS for Starz/Encore as well as an episode of RELIC HUNTER. In 2011, he was nominated for a best screenplay LEO for the TIFF special presentation, REPEATERS, directed by Carl Bessai.

Holy Sh*t Batman!

If you’re a big fan of superheroes, then you may be like us and having a glee-filled fanboy meltdown over the news that continues to emerge from Hollywood on even more superhero stories coming to the silver screen. Marvel Comics & DC Entertainment have spent decades trying to capture our hard earned nerd money, pumping out some amazing and at times not so amazing shows, movies, and games based on our favorite comics. We could cover the last 50 years of superhero cinematic history, but lets’ just take a look at recent events and work forward. In 2002 Marvel set the bar for superhero movies to an all new high with the big budget modern day adaption of Spider-ManTobey Maguire wowed audiences with his boyish charms and CGI enhanced combat skills, as he fought The Green Goblin.

One decent sequel and one teary-eyed massive flop later, Spider-Man is being reborn as The Amazing Spider-Man starring Andrew Garfield, in an another attempt to retell the story of Peter Parker, the mutant spider, and the worst allergic reaction to a bug bite known to medical science. To be fair this new version of Spidey’s adventures appears to be more of a grittier and somewhat darker telling of the story, and audiences will get to judge for themselves if the web-slinging wall-crawler is meant to stay on the big screen, with the film debuting on July 3, 2012 in theaters everywhere.

The Patriot "Captain America Cologne"

Now You To Can Smell Like a Hulking Green Super Beast

By Staff Editor, PK

It’s been a while since I’ve stepped into a comic shop, and I knew that they could order almost anything that my geeky little heart desires, but cologne? That’s right folks, you to can now smell like one of Marvel’s The Avengers! Smell like the hulking tank smashing beast who’s been wearing those same purple shorts far past their launder date! Smell like the billionaire playboy who’s spent one too-many hours locked in a metal suit and desperately needs a shower! Smell like… Water lily? Not the fragrance I would associate with Bruce Banner’s sweaty alter ego, but hey, if you make it, nerds will buy it.

From JADS International, LLC., comes The Avengers Cologne Set, with the tag line “Finally four unique fragrances assembled for the first time!“. And forgive my sarcastic nature, but I couldn’t help but suddenly develop this mental image of a skinny nerd with horned rimmed glasses looking bewildered as a beautiful woman blows him off over his offer of a date; standing there with a tear dripping from his eye and thinking, “but I smell like Iron Man, how could she turn me down?”. But believe it or not, if you desire to smell like Captain America, Iron Man, The Hulk, or Thor; all you have to do is hit up your local comic retailer who can order you up a batch for only $59.99.

If you thought JADS International was a familiar name in the geek/nerd world, you’d be right. JADS has also brought us cologne collections involving Star Trek and Star Wars; with scents such as Shirtless Kirk Cologne and Red Shirt Cologne, for when you feel the need to be that expendable unnamed guy in the landing party. But if you’re more in the swinging mood, and want to meld your favorite nerd girl, check out Pon Farr Perfume for Her. Or if she’s looking to be your little Slave Girl to your Jabba the Hut, (bad mental image there) then check out Slave Leia Perfume.

Joe Simon, 1913-2011

Joe Simon, 1913-2011

It seems the world can’t catch a break this week.  First we reported that Jerry Robinson had died – it is now our unhappy task to tell you that Joe Simon, the co-creator of Captain America and a leading figure during the golden age of comic books, has also died.  He passed from this world to the next last Wednesday night at the age of 98  in New York following a brief illness.

Hymie Simon was born in Rochester, New York in 1913, and grew up in a small apartment above his father’s tailor shop. He moved to New York City at 23 and was hired as an editor of Fox Comics.  That’s where he met one of the most influential illustrators ever to work in comics, Jack Kirby.  They worked together for 25 years exploring what comics could be and setting the standard for the generations that followed.

Timely Comics was was a new rising star in the comics publishing world, and when Simon went there as their new editor in chief, he brought Kirby with him as director. That’s where the pair created Captain America.  The cover of the first issue, printed in March of 1941, showed Cap punching Hitler in the jaw almost a full year before the attack on Pearl Harbor.  It was a deliberately political move on the part of Simon and Kirby, and the first edition sold an unpresidented million copies.

World War II took both of them out of the comics business for a while.  Kirby was shipped overseas and Simon went with the Coast Guard.  Reunited in the late 1940′s, they went on to create comics, romance horror and satire comics.  It was during this time that the pair were able to negotiate rights to half of the stuff they’d created over the years. Captain America, though, stayed with Timely Comics – a firm which eventually became Marvel Comics in the 1960′s.

Simon and Kirby also created the Newsboy Legion, Boy Commandos and others for what is now DC Comics.

Simon leaves behind two sons, three daughters and eight grandchildren.

And we’re back to another wild wacky and slightly toasty Friday edition of Weekly Artist Spotlight, Monday’s edition was postponed due to the issues Krypton Radio was having with its hosting company. Citing an odd hardware failure, the hosting company apologizes and they even gave us a bit of an upgrade and got us setup so we’re nice and stable again. So let’s kick off today with The Great Luke Ski, and his hit song Marvel Poppins. Following up the musical comedy stylings of Luke, we  take a look at the folks from Indy Mogul who share our love of superheroes and even offer a video on how to make your own Captain America costume, complete with shield!

the great Luke Ski

From Wikipedia

Luke Ski (also known as “the great Luke Ski”; born Luke Collis Sienkowski) is a parody, filk and rap artist who writes, records and performs comedy music. (The decapitalization of the words “the great” in Sienkowski’s stage name is his own preferred spelling, and the title has appeared as such on all of his albums to date.) He had the #1 most requested song on the Dr. Demento radio show in both 2002 and 2003 (“Peter Parker” featuring Sudden Death and “Stealing Like a Hobbit”, respectively.[1][2])

Topics of his parodies have included The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Spider-Man, Keanu Reeves and Hamlet. He has, in one song, parodied all the Star Trek television shows. His parody songs are reminiscent of the pop music works of “Weird Al” Yankovic. Luke helped bring parodies of rap and hip-hop to Science Fiction conventions. He does not play an instrument, and sings to pre-recorded music, often in costume or with props. Much of his work satirizes science fiction movies, television, and their marketing and are often from a fan perspective. Many of his longer works are snippets of song parodies collected together into an extended medley, such as Grease Wars or It’s A Fanboy Christmas.

Since 1996, Luke has released numerous albums. He is a frequent performer at science fiction and gaming conventions. Luke is also a caricature artist, and has done the cover art for several of his own albums (with the notable exception of UnCONVENTIONal, which features the artwork of John Kovalic).

Luke Ski hosts the weekly show Dementia Revolution on Dementia Radio, and has a bi-monthly podcast that he hosts with back-up vocalist Carrie Dahlby called “Luke and Carrie’s Bad Rapport” in each episode there are several segments in which the two talk about different things, this podcast also regularly features comedy music.

Fun movie fact, did you know that: Kodak Safety Film is called that because it is guaranteed not to explode.  Originally, film was made of nitrate, which under the proper circumstances could catch fire in the projection booth or even detonate in the cans on rare occasions.

Gives a whole new meaning to a movie bombing at the box-office!

Captain America speaks on patriotism, from the pages of Amazing Spiderman #537

Captain America speaks on patriotism, from the pages of Amazing Spiderman #537

You can find truth in some of the most remarkable places.

In Amazing Spider-Man #537, Captain America had this to say about patriotism and doing what you know is right:

“I remember the first time I really understood what it was to be an American…What it was to be a patriot.

“I was just a kid…A million years ago, it seems sometimes. Maybe twelve. I was reading Mark Twain.

“And he wrote something that struck me right down to my core…something so powerful, so true, that it changed my life. I memorized it so I could repeat it to myself, over and over across the years.

“He wrote –’In a republic, who is the country? Is it the government which is for the moment in the saddle? Why, the government is merely a temporary servant: it cannot be its prerogative to determine what is right and what is wrong, and decide who is a patriot and who isn’t. It’s function is to obey orders, not originate them.

Who, then is the country? Is it the newspaper? Is it the pulpit? Why, these are mere parts of the country, not the whole of it, they have not command,  they have only their little share in the command.

In a monarchy, the king and his family are the country: In a republic it is the common voice of the people each of you, for himself, by himself and on his own responsibility, must speak.

It is a solemn and weighty responsibility, and not lightly to be flung aside at the bullying of pulpit, press, government, or the empty catchphrases of politicians.

Each must for himself alone decide what is right and what is wrong, and which course is patriotic and which isn’t. You cannot shirk this and be a man.

To decide it against your convictions is to be an unqualified and inexcusable traitor, both to yourself and to your country, let men label you as they may.

If you alone of all the nation shall decide one way, and that way be the right way according to your convictions of the right, you have your duty by yourself and by your country. Hold up your head. You have nothing to be ashamed of’.

“Doesn’t matter what the press says. Doesn’t matter what the politicians or the mobs say. Doesn’t matter if the whole country decides that something wrong is something right.

“This nation was founded on one principle above all else: The requirement that we stand up for what we believe, no matter the odds or the consequences.

“When the mob and the press and the whole world tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree besides the river of truth, and tell the whole world–

No you move.”

We are reminded that the price of freedom is vigilance – and the willingness to stand up for what’s right no matter the cost. No matter how the anarchists try to twist your words, stand by them.  In the end, it’s what matters the most.

From the entire creative and production staff of Krypton Radio and the Krypton Universe online community, we wish you a happy and safe Fourth of July for 2011.
