A werewolf stalks the mean streets of Chicago, seeking vengeance in this full-color horror graphic novel.

All right, yes, yes, we know.  We push a lot of Kickstarts at you, and money’s tight these days.  And of course we’re distracting you from our own crowd-sourced funding effort that we plan to try in a few weeks ourselves, and believe me, you’ll know all about that one when we’re ready.

But really, seriously, if you like either horror or comics books (especially both), you’ll want this.  This Kickstarter doesn’t need to prove itself – with five days to go, it’s already just a few hundred dollars away from its third stretch goal, having blown by its original goal of $3,500 like a fur covered hurricane.

From the Kickstarter pitch description:

Mongrel: SOB is a suspense-filled horror graphic novel written by Ed Dunphy with art by Andrew Mitchell Kudelka. One part The Howling and one part CSI: Chicago, this gritty murder mystery pits a monstrous werewolf against a veteran Chicago detective. As the story hurtles through the urban nightmare of 1990s Chicago, the cast revolves around the action like moths drawn to a trashcan bonfire. It’s a werewolf story with bite.

We have already produced the 1st two chapters of Mongrel SOB. We are using Kickstarter to fund the production of chapter 3- the terrifying conclusion of Mongrel: SOB. We will then publish the collection as a Trade Paperback Edition.

Limited editions of Issues 1 & 2 were released at the 2012 San Diego Comic Con, Chicago’s C2E2 convention, and at DanCon – the Chicago southlands premier comic event. They’ve received rave reviews from fans and critics and now everyone wants to know how the story ends.

If the writing in the book is half as good as the writing in the pitch, this one’s a Kickstarter you’ll want a piece of.  Just saying.

Documentary film “Legends of the Knight” to explore the inspirational impact of Batman and the power of heroic storytelling.

We love superheroes. With a station name like “Krypton Radio”, that’s kind of a given. Superheroes are symbolic of our personal struggles to be better individuals.  They inspire us to do better, to be better, and to make life better for our having been a part of it.  The iconic heroes of comic books are an important part of our modern mythology, the stories we tell one another to help us make sense of the world around us.

We can think of few iconic heroes more important to the fabric of our culture than Batman.  Producer / Director Brett Culp is in production on a documentary called Legends of the Knight which explores the impact of legends and tales of the Batman on the lives of fans around the world.  And he needs YOUR HELP to finish it.  It’s hard to imagine a more deserving project on Kickstarter.  Go give them money.  We’ll wait. Then come back and finish reading.

Back?  Good.

hospital_visit“Batman has become contemporary mythology,” producer/director Brett Culp said. “We want to show how enduring stories like this shape us. Our goal is to inspire everyone on the planet who loves Batman to embody his spirit, engage with the world, and make a difference. Together, we are Batman.”

Culp is a life-long Batman fan. Over the past year, he and his team have filmed stories in 12 cities, recording 48 interviews. They captured the stories of individuals whose love of the Dark Knight has inspired them to overcome devastating obstacles, to motivate and encourage young people, and to contribute to their communities.

Well-known Batfans who appear in the film include:

  • Michael Uslan – executive producer of Batman, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises
  • Denny O’Neil – legendary Batman writer
  • Lenny B Robinson – visits children’s hospitals around the country as Batman
  • Jill Pantozzi (The Nerdy Bird) – Superhero journalist with the spirit of the Caped Crusader
  • Rabbi Cary Friedman – author, “Wisdom from the Batcave” Dr. Travis Langley – author, “Batman & Psychology”; teacher of university course in psychology called “Batman”
  • Gotham Chopra – co-author, “Seven Spiritual Laws of Superheroes”; son of best-selling author Deepak Chopra

The film’s production team is offering a unique opportunity for supporters to interact and ask questions via a free online video webcast TODAY on Saturday, February 23 at 2pm EST. The webcast will be hosted on www.WEareBATMAN.com.

“Human beings have always been stirred to greatness by the tales of heroes,” Culp said. “We connect with Batman because he is the super hero with no super powers. Just as he has committed himself to making the world better, we can dedicate ourselves to a noble cause and make a difference. This type of inspiration is a core function of storytelling in society.”

The production team for “Legends of the Knight” is now raising funds through Kickstarter to finish the film. The 30-day funding campaign gives supporters of the project the opportunity to pre-order copies of the finished film and other incentives as a way of funding this documentary project.

The campaign raised nearly $5,000 in pledges in the first 12 hours.

In the spirit of Batman, all revenues generated by the completed film that are beyond production, screening, distribution, and administrative costs will be donated to charitable organizations.

Release date will be Summer 2013.

Alicia like?  Or Alicia SMASH??

planethulkHulk is banished from Earth by the Avengers and crashes on a planet, and forced by an evil ruler into gladiatorial games!

So the planet Sakaar needs a savior. The Red King is a tyrant and forces slaves into gladiatorial games they have no real hope of winning for his own amusement. His guards and swordsmen, they don’t much care for him either, even taking into account the idea that the Red King saved some of them from the deadly Spikes that destroyed their various homes. So when Hulk (Rick D. Wasserman) crashes onto Sakaar, he of course gets tossed into the games along with his cellmates, who each have their own interesting backstory that ties in with how they got there. Hulk, who for some reason is stuck as the big green rage monster the entire time he’s on Sakaar, just wants to be left alone, balks at bonding with his cellmates, and sure as hell doesn’t want to fight in the arena. Forced into it by the control modules though, he has no choice. Wait, no choice? No one makes Hulk do anything he doesn’t want to! HULK SMASH!

It’s a wonderful little excerpt of the Marvel universe, a kind of side jaunt for Hulk, not Bruce Banner.  The film does take a bit for granted that you the viewer has plenty of working knowledge of the Marvel universe: skating over Banner’s back story entirely, the use of Thor look-alike Beta Ray Bill as a villain turned hero, and the differences between the original comic book story of Planet Hulk versus the animated film adaptation for you die-hard fanatics out there. Given a still-popular television show, several live-action films, and decades of popularity, I see no reason Hulk shouldn’t have his own planet too!

Triptych Books scores a hit with dark bromance, Chinese buffet, and the power of the comic book geek in their smash hit, TRIGGER MEN!

This is the story of Matt Whit and Jason McCarty. They’re the perfect odd couple: high school buddies, best friends, blood brothers. One is retired, regimented, relatively successful. The other is a struggling schemer that can’t quite get his act together. No matter how they bicker and fight, at the end of the day they’re always there to help each other bury the bodies.

Literally. Did I mention that Matt and Jason are hired killers?

The first double issue of the comic chronicles Jason’s bungling attempt to get Matt out of retirement, and their darkly humorous journey to get out of hot water.

Truly a product of their own community, Triptych Books is a wonderful independent comic press that produces the dark comedy TRIGGER MEN. Founded by partners Mike Andersen and Kyle Winters, they have already produced several issues, with a trade paperback packed with special features in its future, and the help of an industrious crowdfunding campaign on IndieGoGo. Andersen, who writes for the comic, partners with artist Heather Brinesh, and together they bring readers a skillfully drawn comic with a witty sense of humor that offsets its darker themes.

The first three issues are actually two, with the premiere being a double issue. Issue #1, KILLING THE ELDERLY, follows

Matt and Jason as they reconnect over one last job. Matt is long since retired, and so disconnected that his best friend, Jason, contacts him with a plea for help in pulling off one final hit. While the assignment turns out to be little more than a ploy to try and get Matt to rejoin the human race, the boys soon find themselves dragged into a comedy of errors that draws them into HIGH SCHOOL REUNION, and back into their hometown while they search for a fall guy to get them out of trouble. The results, while grim, are also hilarious.

What makes this a series of note to the science fiction and comics fan? For one, the series so far is a unique form of genre writing and art: it’s done in black and white, giving it a wonderful noir feel. Against this stark backdrop of beautifully drawn panels, we have two hitmen, cold-blooded killers that aren’t as cold-blooded as you’d expect. Cracking jokes, sharing silent, communicative looks, and hassling the servers at the local Chinese buffet, Matt and Jason are not only highly relatable as characters, their creators have made them accessible on multiple levels.

Like us, they’re nerds. Specifically, they’re comic book fans, and it’s a plot point that brings the first major story arc home.

Having met the Triptych crew at Comikaze, I was easily won over by their charm, their kindness, and their earnest desire to produce something that would be embraced by their peers. I walked away with the first three issues, and come to you newly converted. To be as stark, as honest, and hopefully as engaging as TRIGGER MEN itself, I can honestly say that I laughed and gasped at the writing and the stories. I eagerly drank in the wonderful art, and at the end of the line, I found myself liking Matt and Jason as much as I liked the men and women of Triptych Books themselves.

So, if you want to get started? Hit their website at www.triptychbooks.com, or follow them on Twitter (@TriptychBooks). Pick up the comic, support these self-starting graphic novel heroes…and let’s make sure that my—I mean our new favorite contract killers continue their adventures for years to come.

Duncan in his role as Wilson Fisk, the iconic villain from Marvel's DAREDEVIL. Though he differed greatly from the comic physically, he brought a chilling calculation and immense presence to the character that was unquestionable.
By the Mad Woman with a Box

Duncan as Wilson Fisk, aka the Kingpin from Marvel’s DAREDEVIL. Though he differed physically from the comic, he brought a chilling calculation and immense presence to the character that captured his essence flawlessly.

Whether you knew him as John Coffey (like the drink, only not spelled the same) or the Kingpin, or even as widowed attorney Leo Knox in the recently canceled Fox series The Finder, Michael Clarke Duncan has been a presence to be reckoned with in Hollywood since his Oscar-nominated performance as the gentle giant with a healing touch in The Green Mile. His passing earlier this month due to complications from a heart attack he suffered in July was a shock that saddened his fans across the globe. It was a loss to the entertainment industry as well as a worldwide audience who enjoyed his stirring performances and versatile talent, and we in the Corsair’s Closet wish to take a moment and remember the man who brought his gifts, his charm, and many iconic characters to the world.

Though he is probably best recognized in 1999 for his performance in The Green Mile, it was Michael’s first big role one year prior in the science fiction action film Armageddon that brought him to the eyes of the world. From there, he springboarded into the Oscar spotlight with his performance alongside Tom Hanks, and later went on to play the Kingpin in Marvel’s Daredevil against Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner, and Colin Farrell.

Duncan went on to reprise the role on Spider-Man: The New Animated Series, as well as innumerable other roles in films such as Planet of the Apes, The Scorpion King, and Sin City. He also favored the small screen with countless appearances in various television shows, including his final run on Fox’s The Finder. Duncan also lent his voice to many animated shows such as Teen Titans, as well as various video games where his trademark deep timbre served him well. Proving himself a versatile actor with a wealth of talent artistically as well as physically, off screen Duncan was well known for his good humor, his kind nature, and his infectious charm.

We at the Corsair’s Closet wish to extend our condolences to his family and friends in this period of mourning. Please tune in to the next edition of the Corsair’s Closet, today at 4PM Pacific, where we take a moment to pay tribute to Duncan’s work, his spirit, and his influence in the world of entertainment.

Duncan died September 3 of complications following a heart attack he suffered.  He was 54.

Gargoyles watch on high outside Villainous Lair Gaming, a staple for the geek and nerd in all the happy denizens of Normal Heights in San Diego.
By the Mad Woman with a Box

Here’s to a year of getting your geek on, San Diego Style!

Normal Heights, San Diego, is the keeper of a dark and shadowy secret. While unwitting, normal, otherwise untainted and upstanding citizens are called here by the promises of apple pie, blue skies, and status quo offered by that otherwise innocuous and comforting name, once they enter the city limits…there is no escape. For it is here, in the city that residents call ABNormal Heights, that the blackest heart of geekery, fandom, and general insanity thrives! The unwashed horde of comic fans, gamers, and anime fans wait with baited breath and eager appetites to corrupt the innocent and untouched, recruiting them into our world, and their seat of power? None other than the den of nerdery that exists at its heart: Villainous Lair Comics and its sister store, Villainous Lair Gaming.

Gargoyles watch on high outside Villainous Lair Gaming, a staple for the geek and nerd in all the happy denizens of Normal Heights in San Diego.

The mothership, Villainous Lair Comics, just recently celebrated its one year anniversary, and did so in grand fashion a whole five months early by opening a sister store in Villainous Lair Gaming, just across the street. With a prime location near Lestat’s Coffee Shop, these twin stores have become more than just a focal point for local fans and nerds of all sorts to gather, bask in comic glory, and hone their Magic: The Gathering chops: these businesses have been readily embraced by the community as a part of the local scenery, a place where they know you by name and always know just what you’re looking for.

Patrick of the Pathfinder Society of San Diego

Time Siren gets the scoop on all things gaming with Patrick, on the scene to represent the Pathfinder Society of San Diego.

As part of the stores’ anniversary celebration, the Time Siren, Kristine Cherry, ventured out of the TARDIS to report back on the creativity and dedication of our nerdy fellows. What results is a two-part series which includes interviews with store heads Chris and Sara, as well as Villainous Lair henchman Cliff and Patrick, a representative for the Pathfinder Society of San Diego that calls Villainous Lair Gaming home. Over the course of the next two weeks, Kristine gets up close and personal with four people who are creating something bigger than any costume or craft project…creativity has driven these four to shape something not out of yarn or material, but out of the fabric of their own lives. Chris and Sara tell the tale of how they came to live out their dreams in making a living off of something they love, while Cliff and Patrick have found a haven of sorts in this incredible venture: Cliff through employment, and Patrick through patronage.

Please join us today, September 5, and again on September 12 in the Corsair’s Closet to hear the full scope of this success story with such a happy ending, it had to branch out into two stores, and two podcasts! Listen to the interviews here at Krypton Radio, as well as our website, and visit the Villainous Lair online!

Joe Kubert's illustration of himself surrounded by the characters he'd drawn and created over the years.

Joe Kubert’s illustration of himself surrounded by the characters he’d drawn and created over the years.

Joe Kubert, one of the greatest masters of the comics art form, died yesterday after a short illness, three weeks short of his 86th birthday.

DC is currently publishing his work as an inker on Before Watchman: Nite Owl, pencilled by his son Andy, but Kubert is best known as the artist of the long-running war feature Sgt. Rock.  He is also well known for his work on both golden and silver age Hawkman, and for work on  such features as Enemy Ace, Tarzan, Firehair, Tor (created for St. John’s comics in the 1950s), the Tales of the Green Beret newspaper strip, and endless other features and countless covers. In his later years he wrote and drew a great many graphic novels, both original creations (Jew Gangster, Fax from Sarajevo, Yossel) and based upon his well-established Tor and Sgt. Rock characters, and served as an editor at DC Comics in the 1970s.

Over the years Joe received numerous awards, including the Harvey Awards’ Jack Kirby Hall of Fame and the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame, but greater than this was the respect and love of a  legion of respecting collaborators, fans, students, and fellow artists.  He also established The Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art in Dover, New Jersey in 1976.  The school teaches the craft of comics and can claim many great names in comics among its alumni.

Joe’s wife of 57 years, Muriel, had served as a model for many of Kubert’s female characters.  She passed away in 2008.

It’s said that the measure of a man is how many glad hearts he leaves behind.  Joe Kubert left behind a great many.  He will be missed.
