Relay For Life 2011 and Japanese disaster relief efforts
by KR Staff Writer Emiley Tomsen with Krypton Radio Staff
March 12th saw the start of the American Cancer Society’s 2011 “Relay For Life” season in the virtual world of Second Life, the grid exploding to life with parties and fund-raising events of all kinds. By 6PM Pacific time, the combined efforts of RFL teams and other related sources had raised an impressive amount exceeding $27,000USD. As people all over the virtual world celebrated life and reaffirmed their dedication to eradicating cancer, Linden Lab announced it would be supporting the Japanese disaster relief efforts by selling special Linden brand bears via its Marketplace store.
The Justice League Unlimited, operating under the RFL team name of “JLU Caped Crusaders”, Co-Sponsored two such events on opening day. First with their long time friends and partners at the Aftermath II sims, the hard rocking event raised over L$40,000 in three short hours. The party held in the region of Unabated at the lagoon brought together a wild assortment of party-goers who enjoyed a grand time to the sounds of DJ Jetta Bentham, but not ready to call it a day the party moved on to the UFS region of Starfleet Sector002. Partnering up with the United Federation Starfleet, Ntanel Swordthain & Zania Turner with their DJ Kondrad Hyland provided an impressive assortment of music that kept the crowd dancing for hours on end.
The sudden and tragic events stemming from the recent earthquakes in Japan and the tsunami spreading across the eastern Pacific ocean touch even the virtual world, and Linden Lab itself issued a statement today encouraging Second Life residents to support the relief efforts however they can. To help, they have created two special Linden bears – one wearable, and one that sits – which are now for sale at several pricing levels: L$300, L$1,000 and L$3,000. Here’s the direct link to purchase them. Linden Lab has pledged to donate all proceeds from sales of this bear to the Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami Relief efforts of the American Red Cross.
Independent groups in Second Life are also planning to support relief efforts. Radar Magazine in Second Life will be holding a month-long event and are seeking designers to donate virtual items (see this article for details).
