On July 28, 2011 Grant Morrison, the new writer for Action Comics for its controversial reboot in September, gave a live television interview with Dylan Ratigan on MSNBC to promote his new book Supergods.
In the interview Morrison cites Superman as an ideal and worthy of emulation and an example we can learn from.
“A character like Superman is a character who we created to solve any problem. Superman beats everything, and he does it without killing, he does it by using his mind, he does it by using the correct use of force … so my suggestion is that maybe if we start thinking a little bit more like these guys … maybe we can learn something we can learn something … about positive values..”
Superman is a character nobody loves anymore, which is very sad. He is the ultimate boy scout, the squeak clean goody-two-shoes hero who always wants to see the best in every situation. As society as a whole gets more cynical, people neglect these ideas as they like something with bit more edge. But in a world where death, pain and anguish happens, where tragedy strikes at the most sudden of times, we need a ideal to strive towards. We need a symbol and beacon of hope to show us how great this world can be in times of dire peril, how great we can be if we only believe in ourselves. That is why Superman matters. He embodies the best qualities humanity has: honesty, compassion, altruism, and he truly exemplifies what it means to be a hero. If we only showed a fraction of this type of behaviour in our daily lives we could accomplish wonders.
