If you know the name Jon DiMaggio, then chances are you’re already a fan of animation or, more specifically, the many wonderfully talented men and women who provide the voices of some of your favorite animated characters. If you don’t know the name, Jon DiMaggio himself provides the voice of both “Bender” from Futurama and “Jake the Dog” from Adventure Time, among many others.
But recently, DiMaggio has stepped away from the microphone to undertake possibly his most challenging role yet, that of an executive producer, specifically for a film entitled I Know That Voice! Directed by Lawrence Shapiro, I Know That Voice! is a documentary/love letter to the above-stated talented men and women. As an attendee of the premiere at Graumans Egyptian Theater, I would suggest that DiMaggio may have very well outdone anything he’s ever accomplished as a voice-actor, and that’s saying a lot.
The cast reads like a “who’s who” of voice-acting talent, from living legends such as June Foray and Stan Freberg to modern-day notables such as Phil LaMarr, Tara Strong and DiMaggio himself. Each and every one is given time to share thoughts on their fascinating vocation, including personal anecdotes (often humorous, sometimes poignant) and even advice for those who are interested in pursuing a career in voice-acting themselves (yours truly included), all in a candid, informal setting.
The only complaint I would offer, if any, is the lack of certain notables in the field, particularly Frank Welker. That small caveat aside; If you have any interest at all, even just a passing curiosity, as to just who you have to thank for lending voice to some of your favorite animated characters of the past and present, you owe it to yourself to see I Know That Voice! be it at one of its limited theater openings or early 2014 on iTunes.
