The geekosphere has been buzzing for months about the early peeks at the art and models for the characters in Michael Bay’s new fantasy action thriller Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but now we have something even better to geek out over: the new trailer! Released just hours ago, this trailer seems to need more explosions for a Michael Bay film, but it does give us a great close up look at the heroes of the story themselves. We get a nice surprise reveal of that moment when April O’Neal meets the turtles for the first time, though it looks like they’ve tinkered with the origin story somewhat.
The action looks pretty solid, and it isn’t just straight martial arts – it’s martial arts turtle style, with the boys using their natural attributes to their advantage. April O’Neal is not a redhead as she is in the cartoons – though to be fair, in the comics, April was a brunette, so the hair color of Megan Fox, cast as April, at least covers that particular base. She’s a controversial casting choice among TMNT fans, though, as she’s about as far from April O’Neal in the comics as you can get. Still, in the trailer she does manage more than one facial expression (she’s famous for being pretty, but having a relatively inexpressive face), so there may be some hope for this casting choice yet.
We’re pretty much ready to go through money at the screen.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stars Megan Fox as April O’Neal, Alan Ritchson as Raphael, Noel Fisher as Michelangelo, Jeremy Howard as Donatello, Pete Ploszek as Leonardo, Danny Woodburn as Splinter, and William Fichtner as The Shredder. It’s directed by Jonathan Leibesman (not Michael Bay, who is producing but not directing), and Paramount Pictures will be releasing it in the U.S. on August 8, 2014.
