Cate Blanchett tuns 45 today! How is this possible? The Australian-born actress can boast some of the most iconic film roles of our time. Sure, everyone recognizes her as the Lady of Lothlorien, beautiful and terrifyingly powerful Galadriel. We all flinched when she shifted to the Dark Queen and rampaged for a few seconds; it was awesome. But, have you seen her vulnerability and strength in one powerful combination as Good Queen Bess, in the Elizabeth movies? I have; Blanchett makes an astounding transition from young malleable Queen to a ruler and power in her own right.

She was Marian Loxley in that meh Robin Hood remake with Russell Crowe, one of the few good things to come out of that film. And yes, I couldn’t believe it either when I realized it, she was Irina Spalko in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull – which I’m willing to forgive, since she gave a fun flippant attitude to her would-be Russian character. Don’t forget The Monuments Men, in which she played a reluctant French spy for the Americans. And in 2015, she will star in the latest Kenneth Branagh creation, Cinderella, as Lady Tremaine!

Catherine “Cate” Blanchett can boast a whole chest of acting awards: 2 Academy Awards, 3 SAG Awards, 3 Golden Globes, and 3 coveted BAFTA Awards! In early 2009, Blanchett appeared in a series of special edition postage stamps known as “Australian Legends of the Screen”, featuring Australian-born actors acknowledged for the “outstanding contribution they have made to Australian entertainment and culture”. Blanchett is married to playwright and screenwriter Andrew Upton, and they have three sons.

So what does Blanchett want for her birthday? She is big into aid for destitute countries all across the globe, an advocate for Women’s Rights, and lobbies to promote climate awareness for her native Australia. Currently, Blanchett is working to spread the word of Green Carpet Challenge, an initiative to raise awareness for sustainable fashions. So for those of us who really want to know what it’s like to live in the Australian outback while still maintaining your own sense of fashion style, now we can!

We wish Cate Blanchett a very happy birthday and a wonderful year to come!
