The footage wasn’t shot this past Friday. As it happens, it was shot last May during SunFest in West Palm Beach, Florida by Jos Stiglingh. The drone that shot it was a pretty good sized one, a DJI Phantom 2 quadrotor. It was carrying an HD camera, a GoPro Hero 3 Silver, and the whole thing is set to tenor Andre Bocelli singing something wonderful in Italian.
Don’t try this at home. Seriously, don’t. These sorts of flights are starting to become a trend, despite the danger they pose to the public. It’s not specifically illegal to fly a drone through fireworks, but bringing a guided object into a safe zone where it might be struck by fireworks or deflect burning debris unexpectedly back toward the ground or in an unexpected direction is something you’d really want to think about. This pilot got lucky and nothing was hit and nobody was hurt, but the potential is certainly there, and if you’re caught doing something like this, the fines and penalties are beyond comprehension.
All that said, we’re grateful to have seen this footage, and we’re grateful to have had the opportunity to show it to you. It’s something we probably won’t see a lot of because of the dangers involved in getting it, but it’s too beautiful not to exist somewhere.
