Amidst the plethora of superhero movie news that has bombarded the public lately, there is one person who isn’t so hot on all of the upcoming films. In an exclusive interview with Yahoo! Movies, Tim Burton told us he’s tired of the Marvel formula. While acknowledging that Marvel’s formula seems to be working (see the lineup of movies they have planned all the way out to 2019!), he says, “Yes, we all know that superheroes are damaged individuals. Maybe we need to see a happy superhero?” Burton does have a point; many of the current superhero films center around conflicts between characters (i.e Captain America: Civil War) or dark backstories (i.e. Iron Man 3).

This seems like a bold statement from Burton, who is famous for dark movies such as The Nightmare Before Christmas, Batman Forever, Corpse Bride, and Frankenweenie. His signature Gothic style is decidedly missing from the Marvel movie universe, as he directed the 1992 Batman Returns, starring Michael Keaton, for DC. He could be considered the father of modern superhero movies, as his Batman films were wildly successful and laid the groundwork for Christopher Nolan’s trilogy, and even future DC films. Perhaps his innovative vision changed the game back then, and he hopes to change it again now. His iconic characters, like Danny De Vito’s Penguin and Jack Nicholson’s Joker provided mirth to an otherwise dark portrayal of Batman, which has translated today as the standard depiction of the Caped Crusader.

If he feels like people are growing tired of the costumes and tights, we’d love to see him direct or produce a Marvel film he feels is worthy! Wonder if Marvel has any room in their lineup for a Tim Burton-directed superhero film?

What do you think? Is the Marvel formula getting tired? Would you like to see a Burton-directed Marvel film? Sound off in comments below!
