Marvel has finalized casting choices for its upcoming Netflix projects. Mike Colter will be playing fan-favorite superhero Luke Cage. Meanwhile, retired superhero turned detective Jessica Jones will be played by Krysten Ritter. Both Luke Cage and Jessica Jones are headlining their own series, but the former will appear first on the latter’s show.
Besides these two shows in development, Marvel has already begun filming its own Daredevil series, also for Netflix. Lastly, there will be a Netflix series about Iron Fist, a martial arts themed hero, and they will all meet up in a miniseries event where we will see them become the team known as the Defenders.
These are relatively unfamiliar characters to general audiences, but so were the Guardians of the Galaxy and that turned out pretty well. Luke Cage is an African-American superhero with super-
strength and unbreakable skin. Created 1972 during the ‘Blaxploitation’ era, his initial costume reflected the protagonists of the films of that genre. Today’s Luke Cage sports a modernized look, and is one of the more popular African-American heroes in Marvel Comics.
Meanwhile, Jessica Jones is a story about a superhero who hangs up her cape (I know she doesn’t have a cape, but I am using it as a metaphor) after a series of terrible experiences makes her regret trying to be one. After she retires from the superhero business, she opens up a detective agency and solves crimes. Her powers are flight, super-strength and super-toughness. Jessica Jones has a romantic relationship with Luke Cage, so I foresee both characters crossing over to each other’s show often.
Luke Cage actor Mike Colter has had a number of roles on TV and the movies, the most notable is the boxer Big Willie Little in the Academy Award winning film, Million Dollar Baby. Krysten Ritter on the other hand is known for her role as Jane Margolis in Breaking Bad, and has also appeared in a number of films such as What Happens in Vegas and 27 Dresses.
No specific date is set yet for the release of the two series, but we will see them in action in 2015.
