The new film The Fantastic Four is the third theatrical Fantastic Four film to be distributed by 20th Century Fox and a reboot of the Fantastic Four film franchise.

There are times when we are very excited about trailers for new genre movies, especially involving the Marvel universe. This, however, is not one of those times. Trank is making us watch the origin story yet again, except he’s rewritten it so that it’s unrecognizable. If you’re a film student and you want to study how action movie trailers are put together, this one is perfect – because it’s absolutely devoid of any recognizable visuals or story line normally associated with its franchise. It’s completely content-agnostic, so you can study, shot by shot, how to put one together. It’s all straight out of the movie trailer handbook. Trank even uses the tired old Inception trombone chorus honk.

The Fantastic Four do not get their powers from exposure to strange radiation during a deep space mission. Sue and Johnny Storm are not blood siblings. Doctor Doom is now Victor Domashev, not Victor Von Doom. He’s a troll programmer who blogs by the name of “Doom.” Except for a brief glimpse of Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm towards the end of the teaser, there is absolutely nothing about it that even suggests that the movie is about the Fantastic Four. Josh Trank’s hatred of the source material could not be more obvious. Even the logo at the end has been changed so that it’s unrecognizable.

So far, the movie’s production has been plagued by false starts, almost no PR campaign, wildly negative response from the fans when details of the story line were released, and significant re-shoots (ordered by Fox once they saw what Trank was doing) that pushed the release date back by months. If you go to YouTube and check the likes count versus the dislikes count, you’ll see that about 20% of the people who bothered to vote gave it a thumbs down. When was the last time you saw a comic book movie trailer with that problem?

The film stars Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Bell and Toby Kebbell. It is scheduled for release on August 7, 2015. We hope we have done you a service by showing you this trailer.
