As recently revealed in the pages of Variety, director Neill Blomkamp has been signed to direct a new Alien movie for 20th Century Fox. The untitled science fiction project is separate from Prometheus 2, which Fox is still making with original Alien director Ridley Scott. Blomkamp is already comfortable with the sci-fi genre, having already directed District 9 and the upcoming Sony feature Chappie. He had been teasing the new Alien project in recent months, and that it might star Sigourney Weaver, but had previously said the project was in limbo.
Last Wednesday, though, Blomkamp confirmed the tent pole picture was back on track at Fox. “So I think this is officially my next film,” he confirmed on Instagram.
The new Alien takes place some years after the Prometheus quasi-prequel. Ridley Scott is producing both films through his production company Scott Free.
Prometheus, also distributed by Fox, earned over $400 million worldwide. It opened to mixed reviews, though, and Fox hopes the 35-year-old Blomkamp, who last directed Elysium, can take the franchise to the next level.
