Dig out your EL-wire, cosplayers: rumors of a sequel for the 2010 movie Tron: Legacy appear true. Olivia Wilde and Garrett Hedlund are set to reprise their roles as Quorra and Finn in Disney’s Tron 3. Director Joseph Kosinski will also be returning, though his co-director Stephen Savage will not. Only about 22 minutes of the original 1982 film Tron, starring Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner, was actually digitally created, yet this motion picture was a major landmark for computer animation in motion pictures.
Tron: Legacy, unlike the original Tron, made piles and piles of cash at the box office. Eager to recreate its $400 million worldwide receipts, Disney had been working on the sequel for years; Hedlund in 2012 said he would return to the visual-effects-heavy franchise, but that was when it looked like it was going to start in 2014. Fortunately, he appears to have kept his calendar open enough to make this new film happen. The new project, as yet untitled, is now looking to shoot this fall, likely in Vancouver, British Columbia. Disney is being extremely careful about posting plot details online, so there isn’t much to go on beyond that.
Olivia Wilde has most recently starred in The Lazarus Effect. Garret Hedlund just started production on Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk and will be playing Captain Hook in Pan, Warner Bros.’ retelling of Peter Pan.
