Last issue ended on the one of the darkest cliffhangers this series, and the Teenage Mutan Ninja Turtles brand in general, has ever seen, and dutifully picks right up with the expected fallout. Kevin Eastman, Tom Waltz, and Bobby Curnow all have story credits for this issue, although Waltz is credited with the fantastic scripting. The brothers deal with the grief of their loss, Casey’s back to his vigilante, hockey-stick-swinging ways, and Splinter goes on a spiritual journey. The story holds together very well, mixing some grit in with the TMNT’s trademark joviality – which serves to prove that the writing team knows exactly when to bring on the light and whimsical, and when to make it very, very serious. Penciler Mateus Santoluoco returns to the book with this issue, with Charles Paul Wilson III jumping in when things turn spiritual. And both artists do great work here.

However, the thing I feared the most happened. There’s no way to say it nicely, but last issue’s heartstopping ending gets kneecapped in just the first few panels. Still, there are some consequences, things are dire, and some lasting changes appear to be on the way in the final story arc leading up to the 50th issue. And I still say that this is the best comic book out there.

As Week Four begins, Telos interrogates Earth-2 Dick Grayson as to the whereabouts of the other Earth-2 heroes. Grayson fends off the questions by trying to talk Telos out of defying Brainiac and ending the contest. Telos refuses, but heals Grayson’s shattered spine with a metallic coating. Meanwhile, the Earth-2 heroes have reached Skartaris with the help of Deimos. Deimos reveals that the Warlord has the multiverse’s time-travelers, Booster Gold, Per Degaton, Hourman, and others, held captive, and if they can free them, the captives hold the secret to everyone’s getting home.
