It’s been building for nearly a year, but looking back we can see that it’s been the plan the entire time. Today the CW dropped its trailer for Legends of Tomorrow, a new show in the shared Arrow-Flash superhero universe. They have been testing the waters with the initial crossover, and adding new superhero characters to both shows.
Behold all this taken to its logical conclusion: DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.
As always when watching videos on the Krypton Radio web site, be sure to temporarily pause our radio stream using the controller at the upper right.
Did you catch all that? Turn the radio stream back on and let’s discuss it.
Legends of Tomorrow will likely be a mid-season entry, and will run parallel to The Flash and Arrow rather than be a hiatus replacement for either of the shows. The three shows will live together and crisscross as needed. Cast member Caity Lotz, who played Sara Lance / Black Canary on Arrow before being killed off earlier this season, is back in a white costume as White Canary.
The team leader is a new addition to the universe, and it’s an amazing choice. Arthur Darvill, already world famous for his role as Rory Williams on Doctor Who, plays a charismatic time traveling rogue named Rip Hunter. He’s an agent of a sort of time traveling police agency, setting history right when things go wrong. He comes from the future to our time to assemble a team of heroes to prevent a desolate future. It’s not just our planet at stake – it’s all of time itself. The irony here is palpable. Darvill has had a long time to learn how to play a time traveler, and is one of the few actors on the planet who has had actual on the job training for the role.
They seem to be taking bits and pieces of the DC comics universe and reweaving them into a new story line. Apparently the immortal Vandal Savage is identified as being the first big villain the team will face. Ras al Ghul is also an immortal – are they the same person in this universe?
They’ve been calling Brandon Routh’s character “The Atom” for an entire season of Arrow without us actually getting to see him shrink down to proper size, but in this trailer we finally see that happen. There are sure to be a lot more surprises in this effects-heavy offering, and it’s being done so well that it’s easy to suspend one’s disbelief.
Here’s how the full cast is shaping up:
- Victor Garber as Dr. Martin Stein / Firestorm (but without his counterpart Robbie Amell, the other half of the fusion that is Firestorm)
- Brandon Routh as Ray Palmer / The Atom
- Caity Lotz as Sara Lance / White Canary
- Arthur Darvill as Rip Hunter
- Ciara Renée as Kendra Saunders / Hawkgirl (yes, Hawkgirl)
- Franz Drameh as Jay Jackson (the only regular member of the cast who is apparently not a superhero – apparently Drameh was cast as the token normal guy)
- Dominic Purcell as Mick Rory / Heat Wave
- Wentworth Miller as Leonard Snart / Captain Cold
Legends of Tomorrow echoes DC’s long standing nickname for Superman, The Man of Tomorrow, and we also know that Supergirl is making its debut this November. DC has been making an enormous mess of their movie franchises, but they’re somehow making up for it on the small screen. We’d be worried about the mass audience experiencing a superhero burnout, if the quality of the shows didn’t just keep escalating. What worries us is, what are they going to do for an encore, and what happens to the whole geekosphere of effects-heavy sci-fi and fantasy movies after that? Will we hit the wall? Or burst through it and keep going?
