D23 Expo happened in Anaheim, California this past weekend, and while there was a lot of stuff to see surrounding the upcoming release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the bombshell news announced Saturday was that both Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando, Florida, and at the Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California. Covering a massive 14 acres, this will be the largest single themed land expansion in the company’s history.
“We’re building a 14-acre Star Wars land at Disneyland,” Bob Iger told the crowd of 7,500 fans. “We are creating a jaw-dropping new world that represents our largest single themed land expansion ever. These new lands at Disneyland and Walt Disney World will transport guests to a whole new Star Wars planet, including an epic Star Wars adventure that puts you in the middle of a climactic battle between the First Order and the Resistance.”
The new land will be occupied by many inhabitants, humanoids, aliens and droids, according to Iger. Everything will be part of the storytelling, and nothing will be out of character or stray from the mythology. There will even be a cantina where fans can “run into all the droids and roaming beasts ‘Star Wars is known for,” including characters from the Star Wars saga, including The Force Awakens.
The land will have two signature attractions, including a ride where fans can take the controls of the Millennium Falcon “on a customized secret mission,” and an experience that drops attendees into “a climactic battle between the First Order and the resistance.” They are currently casting for roles, and that indicates that all this is being fast tracked. No opening date was announced, but if they’re already casting for roles, it’s going to be sooner rather than later.
Director J.J. Abrams was also on hand with Star Wars: The Force Awakens cast members Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o and Harrison Ford, who received a standing ovation from the 7,500-strong crowd on Saturday afternoon. “It’s a great thrill to be here with you, who made this whole thing happen, I couldn’t be happier, thank you so much,” Ford said.
Rumors of Star Wars land had been circulating for years, and it looks like it’s finally going to happen.
Now, if they can just get Tomorrowland its long overdue makeover …
