Daniel Fleetwood, the terminally ill Star Wars fan whose dying wish to see the upcoming Force Awakens sparked a global social media campaign, has died, his wife Ashley announced on her Facebook page Tuesday. His wish had only been granted by Lucasfilm only last Thursday.

She broke the news on the caption of a photo of herself and Daniel wearing “#ForceForDaniel” t-shirts:

“Daniel put up an amazing fight to the very end. He is now one with God and with the Force. He passed in his sleep and in peace. He will always be my idol and my hero. Please hug uncle Marc for me and give Lucy lots of kisses. Rest in peace my love. This was the last selfie we ever took together. ?#?forcefordaniel?”

Fleetwood, who suffered from an aggressive and excruciatingly painful form of lung cancer, was able to see an early cut of The Force Awakens last week after the hashtag supporting his wish went viral, catching the attention of Star Wars stars John Boyega, Peter Mayhew and Mark Hamill. Fleetwood and his wife have documented his illness on social media. In September he was told by his doctors that he had just one or two months to live, due to how fast his cancer had spread.
