The mystical figure of Doctor Strange has been one of the most iconic in the history of Marvel Comics since his first appearance in Strange Tales #110 in July 1963, scarcely a year after the debut of Spider-Man himself, yet until now has met with only limited commercial success outside the comics. There have been assorted appearances in animated television series, and one made-for-television movie in 1978, but nothing has really captured the essence and majesty of the character — until now. Benedict Cumberbatch brings him to life before our eager eyes in this new teaser trailer from Marvel Studios.
The new film, appropriately titled Doctor Strange, shows us that it’s an origin story, and from what we can see so far, it sticks pretty darn close to canon. Whatever you might have expected from it in terms of its portrayal of the Sorcerer Supreme, though, will be vastly exceeded by what they have accomplished in the visuals and the solidly grounded performance by Cumberbatch in a decidedly ungrounded new aspect of multi-planed universe of unlimited potential. Dr. Stephen Strange is to become the guardian of the gateway to all realities. Tilda Swinton is his teacher, “The Ancient One” who shocks Dr. Strange out of his arrogance and conceit so that he may begin his journey. We can hardly wait to take that journey with him.
Doctor Strange is directed by Scott Derickson and stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams, and Tilda Swinton as “The Ancient One” who teaches Strange what he needs to know to save the world (while she looks great, by the way, it’s a surprising bit of casting when they could have gotten an actual Asian to play this crucial role). The film releases November 16, 2016.
