NetherRealm Studios is rumored to be preparing an announcement to the 2013 fighting game, Injustice: Gods Among Us. It was a DC universe fan service heaven, granting the player the ability to fight Batman using Wonder Woman or The Flash,  and paid respect to the DC Universe.

The first game in the series was released for X360, PS3, and PC. Later in November 2013 it was remastered as an “Ultimate Edition” for next gen consoles such as the PS4.  With 400,000 copies sold in it’s beginning months after release and even more after these past years, a sequel to this game is not entirely surprising.

NetherRealms  will be using the same engine they used for Mortal Kombat X  for the sequel and is said to be releasing it in the spring of 2017.  The French game site Gameblog.fr makes mention of it,  suggesting that an announcement will be forthcoming, possibly even before Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) this year.

Injustice: Gods Among Us had many gameplay balance issues during its first months that took time to fix, such as an overly powerful Superman, or the almost useless Bane. And it didn’t help with future release of DLC characters such as Batgirl.

Balancing issues aside, the competitive scene for this game died out in just two years. This is a relatively short lifespan for a fighting game, especially when you compare it to other games like Mortal Kombat 9 and Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, which each lasted more years in tournaments.  It may have lost its popularity too quickly due to those gameplay issues, as well as being boring to watch. The game, while having its own fighting system inspired by others in its genre, still has the issue that it is a “Mortal Kombat with DC characters”.

Most importantly is the technical support from the company. NetherRealms Studios and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment each have a disgusting record when it comes to supporting their games. Their net code for online play is laughable and the PC version for Injustice and Mortal Kombat X were so poorly optimized, it took the company months to fix its issues. The games are still not fully functional and the lack of trust in its product and performance are concerning, but hopefully they get their act together for  Injustice 2.

Injustice 2 is rumored to be released on the Playstation 4, Xbox One, and PC spring 2017.
