CW’s ‘Supergirl’ Finds Its Superman in Tyler Hoechlin

Lose the beard, Tyler, and grow out the hair enough to do that spitcurl, and you should be good to go.

The popular show has been dancing around the problem of showing the iconic character all year, and it’s been getting awkward. How much longer can they dodge showing Superman’s face?

Apparently the producers of Supergirl thought so too. Krypton Radio has learned that the CW’s hit series Supergirl has found its Superman in Tyler Hoechlin. The newest face to appear over the iconic red and yellow shield is an alumnus of the popular fantasy series Teen Wolf, a role Hoechlin had for four seasons.  He will don the famous red cape and make his first appearance on Supergirl visiting his cousin Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist) in National City at the beginning of the series’ second season when it moves to its new home on The CW.

“Greg [Berlanti] and I have wanted to work with Tyler for ages, so this worked out perfectly because Tyler is Superman,” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said. “We are so thrilled and humbled to add another amazing actor to the legacy of this iconic character.”

Apart from Teen Wolf, Hoechlin has most recently appeared in Richard Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some! His résumé includes the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise as the character Boyce Fox, including Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed, due out in 2017 and 2018 respectively; he has also featured in 7th Heaven, Road to Perdition, Hall Pass and Solstice.

This casting brings Superman back to The CW following The WB’s former Tom Welling drama Smallville, which followed the adventures of a teenage Clark Kent as he learned how to control his powers and grow into the superhero he was destined to be. Smallville ran for 10 seasons on The WB and The CW.

Supergirl returns for season two on Mondays this fall at 8 p.m. on The CW.
