If you’ve been waiting to see what Fifth Element writer/director Luc Besson had in mind for the cult classic French graphic novel Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, the wait is over. If you love high concept space opera and heroes of galactic proportions, this is the film for you. Have a look.

Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are special operatives for the government of the human territories. They have a big job, helping preserve the peace and maintaining order throughout the human-inhabited universe. Valerian has a thing for his partner, though – but his reputation with regards to women precedes him, and Laureline has no patience for that. Under directive from their Commander (Clive Owen), Valerian and Laureline embark on a mission to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all four corners of the universe. Alpha’s seventeen million inhabitants have converged over time – uniting their talents, technology and resources for the betterment of all. Unfortunately, not everyone on Alpha shares in these same objectives; in fact, unseen forces are at work, placing our species in great danger.

The visual style is sumptuous, drawing heavily from the visual style of the comics series Valérian et Laureline which formed the body of work for the graphic novel.  France has been a driving force in comics, often setting the tone and style for the rest of the world. The French perspective has given us such brilliant artist / designers as Jean Girraud (Moebius), who was a designer for Besson’s  The Fifth Element.

The film releases July 21, 2017.

There is just so much cool stuff in this trailer that it’s hard not to be excited to see the film. It’s sort of a French Star Wars, and many have said that George Lucas got a lot of his inspiration from the Valérian series.
