Just revealed on Jimmy Kimmel Live, fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe got their first look at the official trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming.

In this trailer, we continue the adventures of young Peter Parker (Tom Holland) as he starts his career as the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. While he spends his days in the awkwardness of high school, he spends his nights fighting thugs and being mentored by Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), better known as Iron Man of the Avengers.

The previous film in the MCU brought a very young Spider-Man into the mix as Avenger was pit against Avenger, but in the comics it was a much older Peter Parker who found himself in that situation. Marvel Studios wanted a younger actor in the role, so to justify the gap they had to construct an early relationship between Parker and Stark that never existed in the comics. That’s why we think the underarm winglets happened.

In the 1960’s when the comic was still being drawn by Spider-Man co-creator Steve Ditko, the costume had little winglets under the arms. The idea was to imply webbing, and the extra lines usually made the drawings more complex and visually busy and were eventually dropped. Watch for an homage to the original, back to the roots flash of those very winglets. We think this nod to the character’s history is meant to help pull the character back towards the center of the modern legend our favorite wallcrawler has become.

Spider-Man: Homecoming stars Tom Holland as Spider-Man/Peter Parker, Michael Keaton as the Vulture, Zendaya as Michelle, Marisa Tomei as May Parker, Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, Kenneth Choi as Principal Morita, Tony Revolori as Flash Thompson, Michael Chernus as the Tinkerer and Bokeem Woodbine as the Shocker.

The film is directed by Jon Watts (Cop Car) and produced by Kevin Feige. It releases in theaters July 7, 2017.
