Event Horizon hosts Susan Fox and Gene Turnbow invite science fiction author Wayne Gladstone for a visit on SCIFI.radio’s premiere sci-fi panel discussion show to talk about one of the more unusual genre trilogies we’ve seen to date. It’s the Internet Apocalypse series.

The first book in the series, Notes from the Internet Apocalypse, began as a series of articles Gladstone wrote in the first person, featuring himself in an alternative reality first person narrative. The second and third books, Agents of the Internet Apocalypse  and the newly released Reports on the Internet Apocalypse complete the story arc. What makes the trilogy unusual compared to others – apart from being comedic in the way that hardly any SF trilogies are –  is that it’s self referential to the point that the meaning and interpretation of the first book completely inverts by the time you’ve finished the third one. It’s generally circular with respect to self-reference, a somewhat abstracted approach to storytelling, (especially if you compare it to a far more literally circular story form in Samuel R. Delaney’s Dahlgren) and an extremely clever trick.

Gladstone developed quite a fandom of his own while he wrote for Cracked.com, and is the creator and star of the Hate by Numbers online video series. His writing has also appeared on McSweeney’s Internet Tendency, Comedy Central’s Indecision, Maxim.com, and in the collections You Might Be A Zombie and Other Bad News and The McSweeney’s Joke Book of Book Jokes.

To hear the show, tune in this coming Saturday evening at 9 pm Pacific / 12 am Eastern (yes, we know that’s really late for the east coast, but we’re a planet-wide radio station, so that sort of comes with the territory). After that you can hear it on Sunday at 4 pm Pacific / 7 pm Eastern, and then again on the following Thursday and Saturday mornings at 4 am Pacific / 7 am Eastern.
