It’s our first look at the new Black Panther movie and it’s – well, here, see for yourself. We’ll wait.

Marvel Studios has a way of taking a character that few outside Marvel Comics fandom have even heard of and making it suddenly amazing with little to no ramp up, and T’Challa, King of Wakanda, certainly fills the bill.

Wakanda is a paradox, apparently possessed of a primitive tribal nature, but also the world’s only source of that rarest of all metals, Vibranium. This is the same energy-absorbing material used to make Captain America’s shield. The dichotomy between primal and technological serves as a fabulous backdrop for the struggle that is about to unfold. Marvel Studios has pulled out all the stops to make King T’Challa the hero he needs to be to fight the forces of darkness that would consume his world – but will it be enough?

In the trailer, Everett K. Ross (Martin Freeman) being schooled by a captured Ulysses Klaw (Andy Serkis) about how little the world knows about the mysterious country.  The “textiles, shepherds, and cool outfits” that everyone seems to associate with Wakanda is just a front. Wakanda is the true home of El Dorado, and has other secrets so valuable that until now, nobody has seen them and made it out of the country alive to tell about it.

The King’s guard is everywhere (the Dora Milaje), and T’Challa seems to be dealing with Erik Killmonger staging an insurrection against the royal family. Of course, there is so little presented here in a two minute teaser that we can’t tell very much, but make no mistake: this is T’Challa, this is the Wakanda we know from the comics.

As we get closer to the release date, we will be graced with at least three more full length trailers, possibly four. For now, though, this does whet the appetite.

The film stars Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa, Michael B. Jordan as Erik Millmonger and Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia. The film hits the screens February 16, 2018.
