Tim Burton directs the new live action Dumbo, and the first teaser for the new film is here. As always, pause the SCIFI.radio stream while you watch this. While the visuals have the usual Tim Burton depth and vibrance, the sound is also especially rich, and you’ll want to hear all of it.

The film was originally announced in 2014, and the screenplay written by Ehren Kruger. It is based upon a story written by Helen Aberson, and the full-length adaptation of Walt Disney’s 1941 animated film of the same name. Tim Burton was not added as director until a year later, and that’s probably when the film began to acquire Burton’s characteristic melancholy tone.

Disney describes the story line this way:

Circus owner Max Medici (Danny DeVito) enlists former star Holt Farrier (Colin Farrell) and his children Milly (Nico Parker) and Joe (Finley Hobbins) to care for a newborn elephant whose oversized ears make him a laughingstock in an already struggling circus. But when they discover that Dumbo can fly, the circus makes an incredible comeback, attracting persuasive entrepreneur V.A. Vandevere (Michael Keaton), who recruits the peculiar pachyderm for his newest, larger-than-life entertainment venture, Dreamland. Dumbo soars to new heights alongside a charming and spectacular aerial artist, Colette Marchant (Eva Green), until Holt learns that beneath its shiny veneer, Dreamland is full of dark secrets.

The film swoops into theaters on March 29, 2019, so it’s a little ways away. When they release a full trailer, you’ll see it here.
