The Dragon Awards are a people’s choice award, and anyone may nominate and vote for award candidates without being a member of the convention. Since its inception the awards had been tainted block voting from the Sad / Rabid Puppies contingent.

The Puppies overran the awards in their initial year in 2016 following their blowout defeat at the 2015 Hugos, mainly because they had been more diligent in learning about the new awards than the general populace. They claimed that the Dragon Awards showed the world that their ideology-over-quality view of the world of science fiction was the dominant one, but in 2017 only one Puppy slate nomination won anything (the one victory for the Puppies being Larry Correia and John Ringo’s Monster Hunter Memoirs: Grunge, which won Best Fantasy Novel.

This year almost nothing from the Puppies slate even got nominated, and nothing from that slate won anything, the influence of the Puppies having largely fizzled.
