Henry Cavill will play the lead role in the upcoming Netflix series based on The Witcher, according to Variety.

The new series is based on the best-selling fantasy series by  the same name, written by Andrzej Sapkowski, which has since been adapted into  popular game and comic book franchises.

The Witcher follows Geralt of Rivia (Cavill), a solitary monster hunter, as he struggles to find his place in a world where the people around him are frequently more monstrous than the actual monsters. He gets thrown together with a powerful sorceress and a young princess with a dangerous secret. The three must learn to navigate the increasingly volatile Continent together.

Lauren Schmidt Hissrich is executive producer and showrunner on the series. Alik Sakharov,  Alex Garcia Lopez, and Charlotte Brändström are all directing parts of the eight-episode first season.

Cavill hasn’t worked in television since 2010 when he last appeared on Showtime’s historical drama The Tudors. A British actor, he’s primarily known for his film work, most notably as Superman in Man of Steel, Superman v Batman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League, but also for his most recent film, Mission: Impossible – Fallout

There is, as of yet, no projected release date for the series.
