That final scene in Avengers: Infinity War where we see Nick Fury activating a special communicator bearing the logo of Captain Marvel teased one of the greatest events in the history of the Marvel Comics Universe.

Yesterday, Brie Larson tweeted:

Given that she’s been cast in the role of Carol Danvers, the alter ego of Captain Marvel,we can only imagine what she and Entertainment Weekly have up their sleeve.

And now we know what she was talking about – on the cover of Entertainment Weekly is this fantastic full color look at Brie Larson as Captain Marvel in her shiny new suit.

Unfortunately, after all the build-up and hype, this one image is what we got this morning. At least we have confirmation that the January 25 set photos showing Larson in a green suit were showing suit, but not the suit.

From the January 25th shoot – fortunately these aren’t the final colors.

The film taps into the 90’s as its setting in time, a move Marvel Studios’ president Kevin Feige says was calculated. In an interview with the Toronto Sun, he said:

It allows us to play in an area that we have never played in before and tapping into a ’90s action genre was fun for us and being able to see an earlier part of the MCU before Nick Fury knew anything about aliens or anything about super-powered people and also tapping into the Kree-Skrull War, which in the comics was a huge part of the comic mythology, seemed like a fun thing to try and a fun way to give Carol Danvers her own standalone origin story.

Not to come away completely empty handed, we found additional production stills. We see Brie Larsen in the familiar blue and red outfit we were hoping for (no hip sash, but at least this is closer to what we all expected), a digitally de-aged Samuel Jackson as a very youthful Nick Fury, and our first look at the Skrull warriors whom Captain Marvel goes up against in this film.

Captain Marvel as a character may well be the most powerful being in the MCU, even over the mighty Thor. She has the distinct advantage, in any case, of not being part of the 50% of the universe’s population that isn’t dead.

Captain Marvel is being co-directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, and stars Brie Larson in the title role. The film is due out March 8, 2019, just a couple of weeks before the new Avengers movie that purportedly undoes Thanos’ dastardly deed.

Watch this space.
