Twice a year, for her birthday and at the New Year, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II announces the names of those of her subjects she wishes to honor with a knighthood or membership in such elite groups as the Companions of Honor or the Order of the British Empire.  The days of knighthoods and royal honors going only to military officers and government officials are long gone. This year’s honors list includes athletes, authors, actors, and musicians.

The BBC announced that over 1,100 people are on the New Year’s Honors List, including Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason, Welsh cyclist Geraint Thomas, Canadian author Margaret Atwood, and former gang member Stephen Addison, as well as Monty Python comedian Michael Palin.
