Popular British actor Idris Elba (Heimdall in the MCU) will be joining the DCEU in the sequel to Suicide Squad, replacing Will Smith as Deadshot. Smith has scheduling conflicts and will be unable to reprise the role of the deadly assassin.
Idris Elba is a fan favorite, whom many people think should be the first black James Bond. In addition to playing Heimdall, the gatekeeper of Asgard, he is respected for starring in the police drama Luther as DCI John Luther, Krall in Star Trek Beyond, and Chief Bogo in Zootopia. Before Jodie Whittaker was cast, his name was mentioned as a possible replacement for Peter Capaldi as the Doctor.
Deadshot is an assassin and mercenary who belongs to the Suicide Squad, a group of villains released from prison on an unusual community service probation. He is also trying to balance being a loving father with being one of the deadliest men in the DCEU. Will Smith created the role in the 2016 movie. Idris Elba will be taking over the role for the 2021 sequel.
The sequel to Suicide Squad is scheduled to be released in theaters August 6, 2021. James Gunn having left Disney/Marvel under a cloud due to indiscreet tweets more than a decade ago, will be writing and directing the film. Production is due to begin in six months, around September 2020. Jared Leto and Margot Robbie are rumored to be reprising their roles as the Joker and Harley in the sequel. No other information about Suicide Squad 2 has been released yet.
Idris Elba was born in London, England in 1972. His father is from Sierra Leone. His mother is from Ghana.
