Before she was soaring the galaxy as Captain Marvel, Brie Larsen was looking to buy a unicorn in Unicorn Store. This new film from Netflix is the most charming thing we’ve seen in years. Everyone needs a little magic, even if they’re all grown up, and Larsen is just bursting with it in this whimsical urban fantasy comedy.

Larsen plays a young woman named Kit, a failed artist who has had to move back in with her parents, takes a job as an office temp, and struggles with her identity as a grownup. Something important is missing – but is it the unicorn she’s yearned for her whole life? Or something else?

Kit is a failed artist who moves back in with her parents and takes a job up as an office worker. One day, she receives a mysterious letter from an unnamed salesman who invites her to “The Store”, a strange indeterminate place that sells “what you need”. The Salesman offers her the chance to have it sell her childhood fantasy: a unicorn.

Larsen not only acts in the film, she directs herself and co-star Samuel L. Jackson, and co-produces it. Unicorn Store preproduction began in 2012, but it wasn’t until 2016 that Larsen’s involvement was announced. The film was finally shot in 2016 in Los Angeles and presented at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2017, where Netflix bought it. They’ve just announced distribution of the film for 2019.
