MaleficentL: Mistress of Evil

Maleficient, one of Disney’s most complex villains is returning in her own movie. Have you seen the trailer for Maleficent, Mistress of Evil yet?

Krypton Radio's TRAILER PARK

Actor Tom Hiddleston once pointed out that “every villain is a hero in his own mind.”  Thanos, for example, thought he was preserving life. In Willow, Queen Bavmorda was trying to protect her throne and her kingdom. In the first Maleficent movie, it’s clear the “wicked fairy” is more sinned against than sinning.  Will she be more traditionally evil in this movie or once again merely trying to defend herself and her land?

Angelina Jolie reprises her role as Maleficent and Elle Fanning returns as Princess Aurora.  The three fairy godmothers, Imelda Staunton (Dolores Umbridge in Harry Potter), Juno Temple as Thistlewit (Sally in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For), and Lesley Manville as Flittle (Mrs. Cratchit in A Christmas Carol, Cyril in Phantom Thread) are back. Unfortunately, there is no sign of Sam Riley as her hench-bird Diaval in this trailer, although he is listed in the credits on IMDB.com.

There are several new thespians to welcome:  Japanese musician/actor MIYAVI as Udo, Serenity‘s Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Ladyhawke‘s Michelle Pfeiffer as Queen Ingrith.  It looks like the sequel might focus on the complicated relationship between Aurora, her biological mother, and the”evil” fairy who cursed her to get revenge on her father, but became her loving fairy godmother.

Queen Ingrith:  “I remember this story of an evil witch, and the princess she cursed to sleep forever, the story became legend, but this is no fairy tale.”

Maleficent:  “There are many who prey on the innocent.  I’m sure your kind would agree.”

Queen Ingrith:  “If I didn’t know better, I’d think you were making a threat.”

Maleficent:  “Well, do you?”

Queen Ingrith:  “Do I what?”

Maleficent:  “Know better.”

The first film tells the story of Snow White from Malificent’s perspective; this new one does something few of the Disney live action reboots have managed: it breaks away from the original story so that it can tell a new one.

Malificent: Mistress of Evil makes it’s big screen debut this year on October 18.
